        Aboutness Topic and ECM Subjects

        ECM subjects in Korean appear on CPs, which raise some non-trivial theory internal issues in the generative grammar framework regarding the Phase impenetrability condition (PIC) and/or the Chain Condition. These issues have been noted many times in the previous literature (Yang 2002, 2003, Kim & Kim 2002, 2003, Yoon 2003, Hong 2014, Park 2018, among others). As such, many analyses have been proposed to solve these issues, all with their own merits and disadvantages. This paper is another attempt at providing a unified analysis of how Korean ECM constructions are able to nullify the apparent violation of PIC and/or Chian Condition, as well as how and why Korean ECM constructions are different (or similar) from other ECM constructions. We argue that ECM subjects in Korean are aboutness topics base-generated at [Spec, CP] and that only unaccusative subjects can appear as ECM subjects as they do not receive the Nominative case during the derivation. Some immediate consequences of this proposals are that ECM subjects should be allowed with unergative and transitive subjects of non-finite clauses as they cannot assign the Nominative case within the embedded clause and that aboutness topics appearing in the left periphery of embedded CPs should be accessible to the matrix syntactic operations in other languages as well. We show that subjects of transitive and unergative predicates can appear as ECM subjects of non-finite embedded clauses in English and that aboutness topics of Puyuma, base-generated at the left periphery of the embedded CP are also accessible to matrix syntactic operations.

        Exhaustivity, Genericity and vP-external Subjects

        The source of exhaustivity observed in some i/ka-marked DPs in Korean has been a point of controversy among linguists (Schütze 1996, Yoon 2004, Choi 2005, among others). In this paper, I argue that the exhaustivity is a result of movement to a functional projection outside of the vP, presumably to [Spec, FP] (cf. Kiss 1998). The proposed movement is mostly not visible at the surface, due to Korean being a head-final language. However, subjects located outside of the vP show difference in their behaviors with regards to genericity and presuppositionality (Diesing 1992), and those behaviors are observed in exhaustive i/ka-marked DPs, but not in non-exhaustive i/ka-marked DPs. That exhaustivity in Korean is attained via movement is in accordance with observation made by Kiss (1998) that identificational focus in English and German are attained via movement.

        마그네슘합금의 레이저 절단가공 특성에 관한 연구

        Studies on the laser cutting processing characteristics of magnesium alloys can be divided into three parts, comparing the cutting faces of magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy, observing the shape of the corner where straight lines meet, and observing the straight lines and arcs. First, there were no laser cutting conditions for magnesium alloys, so it was observed to cut magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy under the same processing conditions as aluminum alloy to shape and surface of the cut surface. Next, to observe the characteristics of the corner, we observed the shape of the corner according to the angle change of the part where the two lines meet, and finally we observed various angles to observe the characteristics of the part where the arc meets the line. Finally, laser cutting processing characteristics of magnesium alloys and aluminum alloys obtained based on the above study contents were summarized.

        Comparison of eye measurements between young Korean women with inborn double eyelids and those with single eyelids

        Background Eye measurements in Koreans have been studied extensively, but researchers have reported widely differing values, even for the same parameters. These discrepancies are likely due to inconsistencies in the proportions of subjects with double eyelids included in their studies. We retrospectively studied eye measurements according to the presence or absence of double eyelids, and compared the results to those of previous studies. Methods We conducted anthropometric measurements of eyes in young (20–29 years) Korean women with no congenital malformation, trauma, or surgery of the eyelids. The participants were dichotomized according to the presence of double eyelids, resulting in 116 eyes with single eyelids and 124 with double eyelids. We measured the palpebral fissure length (PFL), palpebral fissure height (PFH), margin reflex distance 1 (MRD1), intercanthal distance (ICD), interpupillary distance (IPD), outer canthal distance (OCD), and inclination of the palpebral fissure in each eye. Results The mean PFL was 24.1 mm in the single-eyelid group and 25.5 mm in the double-eyelid group. The other mean values for the two groups were as follows: PFH, 8.0 mm and 9.9 mm, respectively; MRD1, 2.8 mm and 4.1 mm, respectively; IPD, 61.6 mm and 62.8 mm, respectively; and OCD, 85.3 mm and 87.9 mm, respectively. Conclusions In the double-eyelid group, the horizontal and vertical length of the eye was greater than in the single-eyelid group, and the mean values of IPD, OCD, PFL, PFH, and MRD1 were statistically significantly higher.

        Contingencies in EFL Writing Tutors’ Third Turns: A Conversation Analytic Perspective

        Using conversation analysis (CA), this study examines the less explored languageteaching genre within an English as a foreign language (EFL) context: the writing center tutorials. Focusing the analysis specifically on tutor talk, this paper investigates the contingent production of third turns of second language (L2) tutors. Following the lead of Lee’s (2007) study of teachers’ third turns in classroom discourse, this study used CA to analyze audio-recorded tutoring sessions conducted in English. The analyses highlight five ways in which tutors make use of the third turn position in an IRF sequence to maneuver the tutorials, specifically contingent on the two types of student response in the second turn. Based on the analytic findings that illuminate the diverse functions of the tutors’ third turns, this study concludes with pedagogical implications for English-mediated writing center tutorials in EFL contexts.

      • KIM 순환예측에서 천리안위성 2A호 청천복사량 산출물 자료동화

        2018년 기존 천리안위성(COMS)의 후속으로 천리안위성 2A호 (GEO-KOMPSAT -2A; GK-2A, 경도 128.2E)가 발사되었다. GK-2A는 각각 0.5-1km, 2km의 가시채널과 적외채널의 공간해상도의 16개 채널로 구성된 고성능 기상센서 AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager)를 탑재하고 있으며, 10분 간격의 전지구 관측이 가능하여 신속한 기상재해 감시와 대비가 가능하다. GK-2A의 52종 기상산출물 중에서 청천복사량 (Clear Sky Radiance; CSR)은 맑은하늘 영역에 대한 대기복사량을 의미하는데, 12 x 12 (약 24km x 24km) 위성관측 화소를 평균하여 생산한다. (재)한국형수치예보모델개발사업단에서 개발한 전구수치예보모델 KIM (Korean Integrated Model) 기반의 수치예보시스템은 2020년 4월부터 현업으로 활용되고 있는데, GK-2A의 3개 수증기 채널 CSR도 이미 관측자료 전처리시스템 KPOP (KIM Package for Observation Processing)을 통해 처리되어 현업에 적용되고 있다. 단, 앞서 개발된 COMS와 Himawari-8 위성의 CSR 활용체계를 참고하여 기능적 구동이 가능한 상태로 적용되었기 때문에 활용도 및 자료동화 효과 증대를 위한 개선 및 최적화 과정이 필요하다. GK-2A와 Himawari-8의 CSR 비교를 통해 GK-2A CSR 자료의 특성을 더 이해하고, 품질검사 고도화 및 관측오차조절 등 개선 연구를 통해 KIM 자료동화 체계에서 GK-2A CSR의 활용도 및 자료동화 효과를 증대하고자 한다. 두 위성의 CSR은 공간 해상도뿐만 아니라 구름탐지 알고리즘도 다르므로 두 자료 사이에 유사성과 차이점이 공존하는 것으로 보였고, 따라서 각각의 특성에 맞는 품질검사 방안의 개발과 적용이 필요할 것으로 판단하였다. CSR 산출물과 관측증분의 직/간접 비교, 구름영상 및 대기창 채널을 이용한 공간분포 비교, 수평 단위공간의 표준편차 분석, 구름탐지 산출물의 시/공간 변화 탐지 기반의 구름오염 가능 영역 분석 등 관측자료 품질개선을 위한 다양한 방안들을 순환예측 자료동화 실험 결과와 함께 소개하고자 한다.
