        Coastal Dune Vegetation of South Korea

        We used the Braun-Blanquet method to study coastal dune vegetation of South Korea. Coastalvegetation was monitored in thirty sites from April 2004 to September 2005. Seventeen plant comunities were classified into five groups as follows: A. Two associations of herbaceous sand dune plants in Salsoletea komarovii Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Calystegia soldanella comunity, Lathyrus japonicus-Calystegia solda-nella comunity), B. Twelve associationsMiyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Carex pumila community, Elymus mollis community, Vitex rotundifolia-Elymus mollis com-munity, Ixeris repens community, Elymus mollis-Ixeris repens comunity, Lathyrus japonicus community, Messershmidia sibirica community, Glehnia littoralis community, Carex kobomugi community, Calystegia solda-nella-Carex kobomugi community, Ishaemum anthephoroides community, Zoysia macrostachya community), C. One association of shrubby perennial sand dune plant in Viticetea rotundifoliae Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Vitex rotundifolia community), D. One association of shrubby perennial sand dune plant in Rosetea multiflorae Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Rosa rugosa comunity), E. The naturalized comunity ( Diodia teres community).

        Platycodi radix saponin inhibits a-glucosidase in vitro and modulates hepatic glucose-regulating enzyme activities in C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice

        This study investigated anti-diabetic activity ofa concentrated saponin fraction from Platycodi radix (SK1)in C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice and its underlying mechanism. Mice were fed diet with 0.5 % SK1 (w/w) for 6 weeks. SK1 significantly lowered the blood glucose and glycosylatedhemoglobin levels and improved glucose and insulintolerance. The plasma and pancreatic insulin and C-peptidelevels and fecal cholesterol content were increased,whereas plasma urea nitrogen, free fatty acid and triglyceridelevels were decreased by SK1 supplementation. Glucokinase (GK) activity in the liver was significantlyhigher in the SK1 group than the control group, whereasthe glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activity was lower. SK1 significantly down-regulated GK mRNA expressioncompared to the control group but did not affect G6Paseand glucose transporter 2 mRNA. Phosphoenolpyruvatecarboxykinase activity and mRNA levels did not differ between groups. SK1 also markedly inhibited the smallintestinal disaccharidases activities compared to those ofcontrol db/db mice. Furthermore, SK1 was a more effectivea-glucosidase inhibitor than acarbose in vitro. Overall,these findings suggest that SK1 is a potential glucoseloweringagent that functions via inhibition of carbohydratedigestive enzyme activities and modulation of glucoseregulatingenzyme activities in db/db mice.

        The classification of biotope type and characteristics of naturalized plant habitat on the coastal sand dune ecosystem

        Coastal sand dune systems are particularly fragile and threaten the environment. However, these systems provide fundamental ecosystem services to the nearby urban areas, acting, for example, as protective buffers against erosion. In this paper, we attempt to classify the biotope types of coastal sand dune ecosystems and select an index for the assessment of the conservation value. The types of biotopes are categorized based on the vegetation map; floras are examined in order to research the effects of hinterlands on coastal sand dunes. In addition, a naturalization rate and an urbanization index for each biotope type in hinterlands are analyzed. In the ecosystem of coastal sand dunes, the urbanization index and naturalization rate shows a higher value in sand dunes with areas of road, residential, and idle land in farm villages, rice fields, and fields. On the contrary, a lower value in the urbanization index and naturalization rate is present when typical biotope types, such as sand dune vegetation and natural Pinus thunbergii forests, are widely distributed. Based on these results, urbanization index and naturalization rate should be used as critical indices for the assessment of the ecosystem of costal sand dunes.

        Zonation and soil factors of salt marsh halophyte communities

        Background: The structures and soil factors of Suaeda glauca-Suaeda japonica zonal communities and Phragmites australis-S. japonica zonal communities were studied in salt marshes of west and south coasts of South Korea to provide basic data for coastal wetland conservation and restoration. Results: S. glauca community mean length was 67 m and S. japonica community mean length was 567 m in zonal communities, and P. australis and S. japonica community mean length were 57 m and 191 m in zonal communities. Regarding the electrical conductivity, sodium content, and clay contents in Upnae-ri, Shinan-gun, there were significant differences among zonal communities at significance level of 0.05 for two-sided t test. However, other factors were not significantly different. Conclusions: The results indicate that multiple factors such as electronic conductivity, total nitrogen level, clay, and sodium might play important roles in the formation of zonal plant communities of salt marshes.

        일 지역 간호여대생과 일반여대생의 성 지식, 태도, 경험 및 교육 요구 비교

        This study was focused on comparing the knowledge, attitudes and experiences in sex and the needs for sex education of nursing students and non-nursing students. The subjects of this study were 403 female students who attended 4 universities in Busan. The data was collected from November 2002 to December, and analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard variance, t-test and Chi-square. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of sex knowledge of the nursing students was 13.29 and the non-nursing students's was 11.11. There was a difference(p=0.000) between nursing and non-nursing students in the sex knowledge. 2. The mean score of sex attitude of nursing and non-nursing students was 25.64, 26.65 respectively. There was no statistical difference. 3. 61.8% of the nursing students and 62.3% of the non-nursing students had experienced a relation with the opposite sex. Kissing experience was 59.9%, 61.8% and masturbation was 9.5%, 9.2% respectively. Sexual intercourse was 5.3%, 11.9% and contraception was 1.9%, 8.2% respectively. Among these experience, sexual intercourse and contraception experience rate were different(p=0.017, p=0.002 respectively) between nursing and non-nursing students. 4. Of 19 sexual education contents, only ‘the dignity of life’ showed a difference. That is, more nursing students(92.9%) wanted to know about ‘the dignity of life’ than non-nursing students(85.7%). Among the respondent's needs on the sexual education contents, ‘Contraception’ was rated first and followed by ‘Sex psychology of men and women’, ‘Pregnancy’, ‘Prevention of sexual crime’ and ‘Sexually transmitted diseases’. Most of the respondents(95.8%) wanted sex education introduced in the first year of university, and presented as a special class. Specifically, 50.0% of the students wanted the education to be more realistic and systemic. With the above results, when university faculties are sexual educating to university students, they have to aware of the difference of target students. And they need to stress more realistic and specific aspect of sexual education learning rather than theoretical teaching.

        The coastal vegetation was classified by the Braun-Blanguet's method and the standing biomass was investigated on the coastal areas of Uido at the period of June to November, 1999. The vegetation of the study areas were classified with 5 communities as follows: Isachaemum authephoroides community, Zosia macrostachya community, Calystegia soldanella community, Messerschmidia sibirica community, Vitex rotundifolia community. Standing biomass was highest in Isachaemum authephoroides community (564 g.d. w/㎡), followed by Vitex rotundifolia community (392 g.d. w/㎡) > Zosia macrostachya community (255 g.d. w/㎡) > Calystegia soldanella community (79 g.d. w/㎡) and Lowest in Messerschmidia sibirica community (68 g.d. w/㎡)
