The Present experiment was designed to investigate the effects of Soo Jeom San on the function of heart and digestive organs. And thus it was analyzed the total acidity, recovery effect, and the other various enzyme activities such as ATPase, Creatine kinase, Aspartate transaminase, and Lactate dehydrogenase. The results were obtained as follows : 1. The Total acidity decreased after Soo JeomSan administration for 6 days, however the total acidity inoreased after the drug administration for 9 days, these phenomena demonstrate that Soo Jeom San acts as a dual factor. The mechanism of decreasing the total acidity was considered to the inhibition of ATPase activity used for HCI active transport from parietal cells. 2. Soo Jeom San recovered the islets of Langerhans which was disrupted by streptozotocin. The recovery mechanism was suggested that Soo Jeom San stimulates the ${\beta}-cell$ proliferation. 3. Soo Jeom San inhibited the enzyme activities such as Creatine kinase and Aspartate transaminase, however the drug activated Lactate dehydrogenase. According to the obtained results, Soo Jeom San may be used for curing gastric ulcer and myocardiac infarction.

Objective : The antioxidant and anti-Alzheimer effects of Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS) water extract against the amyloid beta peptide (1-42) or H2O2-induced oxidative damage and cell death were investigated in rat pheochromocytoma line PC 12. Methods : The cells were incubated with SZS water extract and oxidative damage-inducing materials, amyloid beta peptide (1-42) or H2O2 for 24 h. The cellular viability was assessed by WST-1 assay, cytotoxic damage by LDH activity assay, oxidative damages of cells by fluorescence spectrophotometric method, and apoptosis by TUNEL staining assay. Results and Conclusions : 1. Preincubation of the cells with SZS water extract prior to amyloid beta peptide (1-42) (2 uM) or H2O2 (30 uM) exposure elevated the cell survival close to the control and decreased the level of LDH activity and the fluorescence from the cell homogenates and TUNEL staining of the cells, compared to only amyloid beta peptide (1-42) (2 uM) or H2O2 (30 uM) treated conditions . 2. Our study suggests that Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS) water extract has protective effects against amyloid beta peptide (1-42) or H2O2-induced cell toxicity through the antioxidation mechanism, which might be beneficial for the treatment of Alzheimer`s disease.
대계(大?)가 LPS로 유도된 Mouse BV2 Microglial cells의 염증반응에 미치는 영향

Cirsii Japonici Herba(CJ) is a wild perennial herb found in many areas of Korea as well as China and Japan, which has been used to treat bleeding and inflammation. Silibinin is the main flavonoid extracted from milk thistle (Cirsii Japonici Herba). It exhibits potent antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effect. In this study, the effect of CJ and silibinin extract on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation was investigated using MTS assay, RT-PCR, western blot, and nitric oxide detection on mouse BV2 microglial cell lines. In the present results, CJ and silibinin extract suppressed nitric oxide production by inhibiting the lipopolysaccharide-stimulated enhancement of COX-2 and iNOS gene expression in BV2 cells. Moreover, CJ and silibinin also repressed some lipopolysaccharide-induced signaling molecules. Importantly, catalase-induced COX-2 and iNOS expression needed activations of $NF-{\kappa}B$, PI3K/Akt, and MAPK, which were important for the transcriptional up-regulation of COX-2 and iNOS. CJ and silibinin interaction on BV2 cells down-regulated $NF-{\kappa}B$-dependent proinflammatory cytokine (IL-2,IL-6) expression. They are involved in the regulation of inflammatory responses. These data shows that CJ and silibinin exerts anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, probably by suppression of COX-2 and iNOS synthase expression in BV2 microglial cells.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of an oriental medicine(Siryung-tang) on pain caused by Post-herpetic neuralgia. We treated a 70 year-old male patient who suffered left flank pain by Post-herpetic neuralgia. As for treatment, we used Siryung-tang. After seven-day of treatment, all symptoms started to improved. This study suggests that Siryung-tang is effective in treatment of pain by Post-herpetic neuralgia.
고혈압-뜸 임상시험 참여자들의 혈압 관리행동에 대한 질적연구

Objectives : The purpose of this study which adopted a qualitative method was to evaluate blood pressure management behaviors of pre- and stage 1 hypertension patients and to provide fundamental data for developing a strategy about proper oriental medical treatment through analyzing factors related to a moxibustion clinical trial. Methods : Semi-structured interviews that focused on personal experiences with hypertension and its management were conducted with 10 hypertensive patients. The interviews lasted for approximately 50 minutes. Results : Most participants recognized that the direct cause of high blood pressure was unhealthy behavior rather than inheritance. Thus, the hypertensive patient believed they could recover their blood pressure to a normal level through removing the direct cause of hypertension instead of taking drugs. The reasons for these statements were that the drugs for controlling hypertension are not natural and they may have side effects. On future management plan of patients, most of them will continue to keep moxibustion and healthy behavior in the well-controlled blood pressure group. However in the uncontrolled blood pressure group, there was an increasing tendency to begin medication. Conclusions : For developing a strategy for an individual approach to hypertension management, we need to develop a client-centered attitude and strategy. That is, we need to tailor our approach to individual cases to avoid generalizations and stereotyping when developing an adherence increasing strategy.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) is a progressive disorder that causes degeneration of motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. It is characterized by loss of motor neurons leading to muscle weakness, and sensation and mental function stay intact during the course of the disease. Diagnostic tests include magnetic response imaging(MRI), electromyogram(EMG), muscle biopsy, and blood tests. In order to a definitive diagnosis of ALS, damage must be evident in both upper and lower motor neurons. When three limbs are sufficiently affected, the diagnosis is ALS. There is no cure for ALS. We experienced one case of ALS, the patients was diagnosed as ALS by EMG and symptoms. We diagnosed her as ShinEumHur(SEH) and treated by Choakwiyeum(左歸飮). We report the change of her symptoms through oriental medical treatment.
사심탕(瀉心湯)이 백서(白鼠)의 혈압(血壓) 및 국소(局所) 뇌혈류량(腦血流量)에 미치는 영향(影響)

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Sasim-tang water extract on the cardiovascular systems including changes of blood pressure and regional cerebral blood flow volume (rCBF) in male Sprague-Dawely rats. Methods : The changes of blood pressure were recorded by data acquisition system composed of MacLab and Macintosh computer. The changes of rCBF were observed by Laser-Doppler flowmetry through a opened cranial window. Results : 1. The changes of blood pressure was not affected by Sasim-tang extract intravenous injection in rats. 2. After pretreatment with propranolol(3mg/kg), L-NNA(10mg/kg) and 000(10mg/kg), the changes of blood pressure was not affected by Sasim tang extract intravenous injection in rats. 3. The changes of rCBF was increased in dose-dependent manner by Sasim-tang extract intravenous injection in rats. 4, After pretreatment with propranolol(3mg/kg), ODQ(10mg/kg) and L-NNA(10mg/kg), rCBF was significantly decreased in dose- dependent manner by Sasim-tang extract intravenous injection in rats. Conclusions : These results suggest that Sasim-tang was related to the regulation of the sympathetic nerve system, nitric oxide synthesis and synthesis of cyclic GMP.
