The thyroid hormones are essential to the normal development of brain and tb:; growth in infants. However, in the infants Hith congenital hypothyroidism, they typically have an elevated TSH concentration and lowered T4 value, which will lead to mental retardation without the medical treatment. Approximately one infant in every 3000 and 4000 has congenital hypothyroidism. The clinical symptoms of congenital hypothyroidism are very difficult to detect earlily because of nonspecificity of it. Threrfore, masscreening test is indispensable from the frequent occurrence. We have routinely tested T4 and TSH concentration in infants by 3-- 7 days of birth with the blood blotling paper as specimen by RIA mehtod. According to our laboratory data, approximately 8 in 30,000 samples were abnormal case. Which was one per 3,500 samples.
