Vol.21 No.2

Objective: In this study, we tried to identify the effects of stress on drinking problems and to check the mediated effects of stress response behavior on nursing college students. Methods: The number of people studied was 163, and the collected data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 statistical program. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to analyze the mediated effects between stress and problem drinking. Results: Problem drinking showed a positive correlation with stress (r=.258, p≤.001) and also showed a positive correlation with coping (r=.226, p≤.005). In addition, as a result of verifying the mediating effect of avoidance coping, it was found that there was a partial mediation between stress and problem drinking (Z=3.08). Conclusion: In order to improve the mental health of nursing students with high stress levels, it is necessary to first check the level of stress and coping with it. It is necessary to provide a program that reduces avoidance coping and manages stress more efficiently.

Vol.53 No.1

Robinia pseudoacacia L. (Leguminosae) is widely distributed in Asia, North America and Europe. The root bark has been traditionally used for hemostasis, arthritis and hypertension. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the biological activity and the bioactive constituents of the root bark. We found that the methanol extract obtained from the root bark of R. pseudoacacia reduced the level of ROS and NO production in LPS-induced inflammation of RAW 264.7 cell line. Among the fractions, methylene chloride fraction showed the highest inhibitory activity against the inflammation. Seven constituents (1-7) were isolated from this fraction, and the chemical structures were determined to be medicarpin (1), (-)-vestitol (2), indole 3-carboxaldehyde (3), 3-acetylindole (4), liquiritigenin (5), 4(1H)-quinolone (6) and 8-methoxyononin (7). Among the isolates, medicarpin (1), (-)-vestitol (2), 3-acetylindole (4) and liquiritigenin (5) inhibited ROS and NO production in a dose-dependent manner. This is the first study to show the anti-inflammatory activity of the root bark of R. pseudoacacia, and it is suggested that the four constituents (1, 2, 4, and 5) could play a role in the biological activity.

Lindera erythrocarpa Makino extract reduces obesity induced by high-fat diet in rats

2010 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.10 No.4

Lindera erythrocarpa Makino (LE) is widely distributed on Jeju Island, where it has been used for various traditional therapies. Effects of a crude extract of LE were examined in rats with obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Anti-obesity effects were followed in rats receiving orally administered vehicle, 100mg/kg extract, or 250 mg/kg LE extract, for 56 days. LE extract (250mg/kg) suppressed increases in body weight and epididymal fat, with amelioration of fatty changes in the liver. Additionally, serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and total cholesterol were significantly decreased compared with those of vehicle-treated groups (p <0.05). These results suggest that oral administration of LE extract reduced rat obesity induced by HFD, possibly through the reduction of fat accumulation.

Vol.40 No.4

Korean folk medicine ‘JoRitDae’ has been used mainly to cure vomiting and cancer. With regard to the botanical origin of ‘JoRitDae’, it has been considered to designate the rhizome of Sasa species (Gramineae), but there was no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of ‘JoRitDae’, the anatomical characteristics of the rhizome of Sasa species growing wild in Korea and Japan, Sasa borealis, S, kurilensis, S. quelpaertensis, S. charatacea and S. senanensis were studied. As a result, it was found the morphological criteria for the five Sasa species that could discriminate them by the number of cell layers in cortex, the ratio of thickness of cortex to rhizome radius, the number of cell layers in the va scular bundle sheath, the total number of vascular bundle and thickness of vascular bundle sheath. According to these criteria, it was clarified that the commercial folk medicine ‘JoRitDae’ was the rhizome of Sasa borealis.

Vol.0 No.50

The Chinese minority (hwagyo) makes up a major historical ethnic group in Korea, and their history of migration and individual life histories are deeply intertwined with changes in Korean society; in particular, those relating to the colonial and the Cold War history. Most of Korean hwagyo population originate from Sandong region of China. This article looks at the genealogy of Korea's hwagyo society focusing on that based in Busan, with a particular emphasis on family and kinship relations among people who moved to the city during the war. These families began their lives in Busan as war refugees, and their family relations show two distinct patterns. These bifurcating patterns relate to different histories of migration - whether people migrated as individuals or in family groups - and the difference is an effect of the Cold War. Having waged a war in both China and Korea, Japan, within the Cold War system, provided a marginal space of communication among separated families or that for finding livelihood for the first and second generations of the Korean hwagyo. Whereas their previously separated family and kinship relations are being recovered, today, the Busan hwagyo are facing new challenges and unfamiliar situations.

Identification and Quantification of Steroidal Saponins in Polygonatum Species by HPLC/ESI/MS

2005 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.28 No.5

An HPLC/ESI/MS method has been developed to identify and quantify the spirostanol glycosides in the rhizomes of five Polygonatum species. The relative distribution of two steroidal saponins in each extract was established using the selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode via an electrospray ionization (ESI) source. It was found that there were significant differences in the amount of spirostanol glycosides among the Polygonatum species. The results showed that this method could be used to identify the steroidal saponins in the extracts and differentiate Polygonatum species with high sensitivity and reproducibility in a short time. Fragmentation patterns of the two reference compounds were also discussed with the electrospray ionization multi-stage tandem mass spectroscopy (ESI-MSn).

Vol.- No.34

Sakhalin-Korean’s “permanent homecoming” has processed in the discourse on the post cold war since Korea-Russia establishment of national friendship in 1990. Economic needs for coal, oil, gas and fishery resources is not irrelevant. Busan has been emerging as a representative trading city on both sides of Korea and Russia. This thesis considers that economic interchange has relevance to people’s movement and contemplates Sakhalin-Korean’s homecoming on family relation in the view of post colonialism. Sakhalin-Korean had started moving to Sakhalin through Yeunhaeju(연해주), most of them were forced to move under Japanese imperialism and worked on coal mine or logging. They had been under detention until 1990’s when negotiation between Korea, Japan and Russia had been occurred. This was ‘business’ made by negotiation among countries in the mood of post colonialism, post cold war. It is ‘another migration’ for Sakhalin-Korean, and it causes another family separation. In other words, ‘double separation’ as return to Korea means that the first generation leave their home under colonial era, or family separation that occurred because of impressments to mainland Japan. It is paradoxical situation as parents generation’s wish for family reunion becomes separation from next generation. This is because firstly, only people who were born before 1945 and their spouses acquire qualification to come back their homeland. At the point of time, end of Japanese colonialism in 1945 is applied. This measure lose sight of cold war system that has stagnated return after the liberation. Secondly, people who returned are not considered as member of family foamed in Sakhalin. This instigates isolation, family segmentalization. This problem shows the limit of there turn that made inside the frame of nation state. In this particular situation, the returnees perform a role connecting Busan and Sakhalin. At this present 120 returnees have settled down mostly at close to their home town of their parents or themselves. Sakhalin returnees, mostly second generation attach great importance to ‘return home on behalf of parents’ and put an effort on relationship with their relatives in homeland. In addition, they have been creating another life world between Busan and Sakhalin by attaching a meaning of their new home and trying to keep in contact with remained family in Sakhalin.
