This paper presents a novel forced-liquid cooling concept for heat rejection of high power electronic devices existing in notebook computers etc. In order to realize a forced-liquid cooling system for the electronic devices, a simple planar pump using electro-conjugate fluid (ECF) is proposed, fabricated, and experimentally investigated. The ECF is a kind of dielectric and functional fluids, which generates a powerful jet flow (ECF-jet) by an applied static electric field through a pair of rod-like electrodes. The ECF-jet directly acts on the working fluids, thus, the proposed planar ECF pump needs no moving part, produces no vibration and noise. The experiments of the fabricated planar ECF pump with A4 size were performed with four different flow channel heights and seven different electrode patterns. Through experimental results, the noload flow rate of 5.5 ㎤/s, maximum output pressure of 7.1 ㎪, and maximum output power of 11.6 ㎽ were achieved at an applied voltage of 2.0 ㎸.

This paper presents a liquid cooling concept for heat rejection of high power electronic devices existing in notebook computers etc. The design, fabrication, and performance of the planar ECF pump and forced-liquid cooling system are summarized. The electro-conjugate fluid (ECF) is a kind of dielectric and functional fluids, which generates jet flows (ECF-jets) by applying static electric field through a pair of rod-like electrodes. The ECF-jet directly acts on the working fluid, so the proposed planar ECF pump needs no moving part, produces no vibration and noise. The planar ECF pump, consists of a pump housing and electrode substrate, achieves maximum flow rate and output pressure of 5.5 ㎤/s and 7.2 ㎪, respectively, at an applied voltage of 2.0 ㎸, The forced-liquid cooling system, constructed with the planar ECF pump, liquid-cooled heat sink and thermal test chip, removes input power up to 80 W keeping the chip surface temperature below 70 ℃. The experimental results demonstrate that the feasibility of forced-liquid cooling system using ECF is confirmed as an advanced cooling solution on the next-generation high power electronic devices.

전기철도 부하는 대용량의 단상 이동부하로, 전기철도 차량 기동 시 부하변화가 매우 크고 급격한 특징이 있으며, 그로 인해 전압강하, 역률저하 등 다양한 전력품질 문제가 발생하여 왔다. 또한, 그 여파가 상위 계통에 파급되어 전기철도 계통의 전력품질 향상을 위한 설비 도입이 시급한 실정이다. 이와 같은 전력품질 문제를 해결하기 위한 장비로, 연속적인 무효전력 보상 및 전압조정이 가능한 FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System)설비인 SVC(Static Var Compensator)을 적용하여 전압강하 보상이 가능한 전력품질개선장치를 연구개발하고자 한다.
