A Understanding of Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods in the Occident

Dietary supplements are used by more than one-half of the adult US population. By contrast, herbal products in Germany are carefully regulated by the same standards as drugs, and efforts are under way to standardize their regulation in the entire European Union. Most herbal users do not inform their physicians that they are taking these supplements, and most physicians do not inquire. Although some herbal products have clinically proven benefits, it is increasingly apparent that many contain potentially toxic substances, particularly in relation to interactions with drugs. Hence, it is essential that practicing physicians develop a working knowledge of herbals-specifically, about claims for their usage and potential or proven efficacies and toxicities-and that they incorporate such knowledge into the evaluation and management of their patients. By contrast, functional foods-integral components of the diet that are understood to contribute added health benefits-are the subject of intense and widespread research in food and nutritional science. Examples include many polyphenolic substances, carotenoids, soy isoflavones, fish oils, and components of nuts that possess antioxidant and other properties that decrease the risk of vascular diseases and cancer. Practicing physicians are advised to stay abreast of these emerging findings in order to best advise their patients on the value of health-promoting diets in disease prevention.

Objectives: Allergy is an immune dysfunction caused by degranulation from mast cells in the early phase of allergic disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-allergic effect of fermented Angelicae gigantis Radix in human mast cell line, HMC-1. Method: The Angelicae gigantis Radix was fermented by Lactobacillus acidophilus. The cell toxicity of fermented Angelicae gigantis Radix(FAGR) was determined by MTT assay. The release of β-hexosaminidase from HMC-1 stimulated by phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus A23187 was determined by β -hexosaminidase assay. Also, the concentrations of cytokines (interleukin-1β, -6, -8 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The gene expression of COX-2 from HMC-1 stimulated by phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus A23187 was determined by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The release of histamine on substance P-stimulated HMC-1 was measured by histamine assay. Result: The FAGR suppressed the release of β-hexosaminidase, a marker of degranulation, from HMC-1 stimulated by PMA plus A23187. The FAGR inhibited the production of interleukin-1β, -6, -8 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. The FAGR inhibited the expression of COX-2 mRNA. The FAGR suppressed the release of histamine on substance P-stimulated HMC-1. Conclusion: These results provide that FAGR may be beneficial in the treatment of allergic inflammatory disease.
태양 에너지 발전 효율 증대를 위한 PVT 패널 내부 유동에 관한 실험적 연구

Renewable energy generation has increased and will increase about 10 times in 30 years. Since solar energy accounts for a significant part of renewable energy production, increase of efficiency is important. There are 2 ways to use solar energy, photovoltaic and solar thermal panel. The combination of those ways is called photo voltaic thermal (PVT) panel which simultaneously obtains electricity and thermal energy from the sun. This study deals with a PVT panel composed of a phase change material (PCM) and a heat exchanger in PV panel. The water is used as heat exchanger fluid and change in flow rate causes change in thermal energy output. In this experiment, by comparing between 30LPM and 60LPM flow rate, 60LPM flow rate results in 7.3 % high in thermal energy output.

The purpose of this study was to identify the satisfaction with the planning aspects of the apartment and their preference for apartment remodeling in the metropolitan area at the time of COVID-19 outbreak by conducting online survey as a research method. Major findings are follows; First, it was found that the elements of each family life cycle clearly separate personal space and family group space to secure privacy and plan more storage space within the household. Second, as for the remodeling plan elements in the aspect of the main movement plan, the preference of the foot button and touchless system installation items in the elevator was relatively high in all family life cycles. Third, in terms of complex and community facility planning, the preference for installing a sink in sports facilities or children’s playgrounds is relatively high in all family life cycles. This study is different from previous studies in that it classified residents by family life cycle and suggested a remodeling plan for each family life cycle accordingly.
4종의 발효균주가 당귀의 nodakenin과 decursin의 함량에 미치는 변화

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the nodakenin and decursin contents in each fermented Angelicae gigantis Radix by 4 species of ferment strains. Methods: The strains of fermented Angelicae gigantis Radix were Lactobacillus plantarum(SE1), L. acidophilus(AC), Bacillus subtilis(B2) and B. licheniformis(BL2). The fermentative changes of nodakenin and decursin were analyzed using HPLC. Results: All of 4 species strains reduced nodakenin and decursin concentration in Angelicae gigantis Radix by fermentation. But fermentability were difference between strains. The nodakenin concentration of AC was lower than B2. The decursin concentrations of SE1 and AC were lower than B2 and BL2. Conclusions: 4 species of fermental strain were difference decomposable rate with nodakenin and decursin in fermented Angelicae gigantis Radix.
