Piezo devices have large power density and simple structure. They can generate larger force than the conventional actuators. It has also wide bandwidth with fast response in a compact size. Thus the piezo devices are expected to be used widely in the future for small actuators with fast response time and large actuating force. However, the piezo actuators need high voltage with high driving current due to their large capacitive property. In this paper, we propose a simple method to drive piezo devices using voltage inversion circuit with coil inductance. Experiments with real circuit demonstrates that the proposed scheme can improve the energy efficiency very much.

According to the national building status, there are a total of 2.89 million buildings that are over 30 years old after completion, and the number is increasing by more than 70,000 to 80,000 buildings every year. As a result, the demand for demolition works is also increasing, and more than 3 to 4 collapse accidents occur steadily every year during demolition work. Major causes of accidents include non-compliance with plans, negligence of on-site supervisors, and failure to secure structural safety. Due to the strengthening of the Severe Disaster Punishment Act, there is growing interest in the demand for secure management of collapse detection during demolition works. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the applicability of real-time safety monitoring systems using a total station capable of 3D automatic displacement measurement in building demolition work for securing structural safety by the load changes during the demolition process.

Background: This case study suggests the potential usefulness of Korean medicine treatment with herbal medicines for shoulder pain and improving the quality of life of patients with frozen shoulder. Case Summary: A patient had shoulder pain and decreased daily living function due to frozen shoulder. Korean medicine treatments, including herbal medicine; acupuncture at points TE14, HT1, BL11, SI10, and LI15; and pharma-acupuncture containing Sinbaro, were applied for 31 days. The Numeric Rating Scale scores for shoulder pain decreased from 7 to 4, and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores decreased from 71.54 to 66.15, with an increase in range of motion from 30° flexion, 60° abduction, and 10° external rotation to around the normal range of motion. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment can be considered an effective conservative management option for pain and decreased daily living function in patients with frozen shoulder.

We developed a low-cost automatic diagnosis system for water quality in cooling towers to measure the concentrations of key ingredients such as Ca2+, Cl-, PO4 3-, and Fe2+. Ca2+, and Cl- are the main factors that cause the generation of scale, corrosion, and sludge in water pipes. PO4 3- prevents corrosion, sludge and scale by inhibiting the ions (i.e., Ca2+, Cl-) from sticking to the pipes. Fe2+ is an indicator of pipe corrosion. The proposed system consists of a microprocessor, a specimen container and heater, a precision pump, relays and valves, LED optical sources, and photo detectors. It automatically collects water samples and carries out pretreatment for determining the concentration of each chemical, and then estimates the concentration of each ion using low-cost LED optical sources and detectors. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of the proposed system is sufficiently high for water quality diagnosis and management of cooling towers, demonstrating the possibility of the proposed system`s wide usage in real environments.
