Transcriptomic approach for understanding the adaptation of Salmonella enterica to contaminated produce

Salmonellosis is a form of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella infection. The main transmission route of salmonellosis has been identified as poorly cooked meat and poultry products contaminated with Salmonella. However, in recent years, the number of outbreaks attributed to contaminated raw produce has increased dramatically. To understand how Salmonella adapts to produce, transcriptomic analysis was conducted on Salmonella enterica serovar Virchow exposed to fresh-cut radish greens. Considering the different Salmonella lifestyles in contact with fresh produce, such as motile and sessile lifestyles, total RNA was extracted from planktonic and epiphytic cells separately. Transcriptomic analysis of S. Virchow cells revealed different transcription profiles between lifestyles. During bacterial adaptation to fresh-cut radish greens, planktonic cells were likely to shift toward anaerobic metabolism, exploiting nitrate as an electron acceptor of anaerobic respiration, and utilizing cobalamin as a cofactor for coupled metabolic pathways. Meanwhile, Salmonella cells adhering to plant surfaces showed coordinated upregulation in genes associated with translation and ribosomal biogenesis, indicating dramatic cellular reprogramming in response to environmental changes. In accordance with the extensive translational response, epiphytic cells showed an increase in the transcription of genes that are important for bacterial motility, nucleotide transporter/metabolism, cell envelope biogenesis, and defense mechanisms. Intriguingly, Salmonella pathogenicity island (SPI)-1 and SPI-2 displayed up- and downregulation, respectively, regardless of lifestyles in contact with the radish greens, suggesting altered Salmonella virulence during adaptation to plant environments. This study provides molecular insights into Salmonella adaptation to plants as an alternative environmental reservoir.

Netflix, a global OTT service, has played a significant role in reshaping the global landscape of Korean drama consumption. This study aims to explore how Netflix, which facilitates novel cultural mediation and content flow, influences the reception of Korean dramas in regions where the Hallyu has already become widespread, exemplified by Thailand. To investigate this, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight Thai viewers of Korean dramas on Netflix, The findings revealed, firstly that Netflix is becoming the dominant platform that replaces traditional channels for Korean drama consumption. Second, unlike the attention garnered by the blockbuster-like Netflix Originals, Thai viewers exhibit a preference for romance and drama genres in Korean dramas, appreciating their distinctive qualities. Third, due to the high familiarity of Thai viewers with Korean dramas, their reliance on Netflix’s recommendation algorithm is relatively low. Lastly, while Korean dramas’ sociopolitical messages resonate strongly in Thai society, awareness of the stereotypical representations of Thailand in Korean dramas is increasing.

Investor’s Overreaction to an Extreme Event: Evidence from the World Trade Center Terrorist Attack

This paper investigates whether investors overreacted to the World Trade Center terrorist attack, using insurers’ stock returns. Short-term abnormal return reversals are observed after the 9/11 attack. The reversals may reflect the substantially increased uncertainty surrounding insurer stocks after the event, meaning that the price reactions are efficient risk adjustments. However, after controlling for the change in risk, I still find evidence of price reversals, which I attribute to investor overreaction. To bolster this claim, I provide cross-sectional evidence that reversals are stronger for insurers with higher information asymmetry, which have wider ex-ante bid-ask spreads and smaller numbers of analysts following. This result indicates that the reversals are likely due to behavioral biases.

직무스트레스와 조직몰입의 관계에 대한 공정성의 조절효과 분석: 공무원 직급별 비교를 중심으로

코로나 19 이후 인사체계 전반에서 민간부문과 공공부문이 비교되면서 공직 침체 분위기가 가속화되고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식하에서 직무스트레스와 조직몰입 간의 관계에 있어 공정성의 조절효과를 실증적으로 규명하고, 전체 공무원을 관리자 직급과 비관리자 직급으로 나누어 변수 간의 관계를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 직무스트레스는 조직몰입도에 유의하게 부(-)의 영향력을 미치며, 조직 내 공정성에 대한 인식은 이를 완화하는 기제로 작용할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 공무원 전체 및 비관리자 직급의 경우 분배공정성이 직무스트레스와 조직몰입 사이에 유의한 조절효과를 보이는 것으로 나타난 반면, 관리자 직급의 경우 상호작용공정성이 유의한 조절효과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 공무원의 직무스트레스 극복과 조직 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 조절변수로서 조직 내 공정성의 확보가 중요하며, 직급별로 다른 관리 기법의 필요성을 시사한다. 본 연구는 공무원의 직무스트레스 감소 및 조직효과성 제고를 위한 이론 및 조직 관리적 관점에서 시사점을 도출하였다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. This study empirically elucidates the moderating effect of perceived organizational justice on the relationship between job stress and organizational commitment among public servants, aiming to derive theoretical and managerial implications for alleviating job stress and enhancing organizational effectiveness. The results indicate that job stress significantly exerts a negative influence on organizational commitment, and the perception of organizational justice can act as a mitigating mechanism. Distributive justice manifests a significant moderating effect for the overall group of public servants and non-managerial ranks, while interactional justice exhibits a significant moderating effect for managerial ranks. The findings underscore the importance of securing organizational justice as a moderating variable positively influencing the alleviation of job stress and organizational performance among public servants, with implications for the necessity of differentiated management strategies based on public servants’ rank. Overall, this research contributes to the understanding of organizational dynamics in the context of public administration and provides insights for practitioners seeking to improve job stress management and organizational effectiveness within public service settings.

이름 없는 동학도를 위한 허스토리 - 구술사로 재구성한 여인오대의 동학사

This paper is an attempt to reconstruct the lives of Donghak women from the time when Donghak spread to the southern regions up to the present, based on scattered records and oral accounts. The lives of the women discussed in this paper revolve around Kim Nak-chul (金洛喆, 1858~1917), a key figure in understanding Donghak and the Donghak Revolution in the Buan region. Therefore, this period is crucial in Donghak history, possessing both chronological and geographical significance. However, due to the limitations of existing research perspectives and the lack of data, the actual context of women’s lives during this era has not received sufficient attention. This text attempts to trace the lives of women who experienced important events in Donghak history through oral records. By doing so, it not only proposes a method for addressing women’s history but also hopes to provide insights into the lives of protagonists who practiced numerous aspects of “mosim” (모심) and “salim” (살림), aspects that existing historical documentation may not fully reveal.
