Effects of pulsed UV light on photo-alignment

Pulsed UV lamps compared with the conventional arc discharge lamps are not harmful to the human and are irradiated momentary and strong pulsed UV. The advantages of the lamp is a short photo-process time, excellent surface penetration, and not have thermal deformation under film process. In this study, we studied the effect of the pulsed UV on the photo-alignment process and found that the processes are very much dependent on the exposure time, exposure distance, voltage and flash frequency of the lamps. As a result, we found the optimum conditions of the photo-alignment process using the pulsed UV lamp.

Photo-alignment is important technology in the development of efficient liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Photo-alignment agents with high photosensitivity uniformly aligned angle and direction by linear polarized UV (LPUV) are effective materials for the increase of productivity and the decrease of production cost. In the study, two kinds of photosensitive polymers with chalcone groups have been examined for retarder film and characterized theirs LC aligned properties by thermal and additives effects. As a result, nonalignment ratio of the films decreased from 2% to 91% under 40 mJ·cm<sup>-2</sup> of LPUV exposure energy.
New photopolymers with different end groups for 3D retardation film

Photo-alignment materials are needed to have high photosensitive properties for high productivity on the practical process of 3D retardation film. Photo-alignment is efficient method for aligning liquid crystals (LCs). Recently, many studies have been examined in order to improve the photoalignment properties as well as informing the mechanism of the photoalignment in the homo and copolymers with various side chain based on chalconyl group attached to flexible main chain. In this work, new photo-alignment materials containing chalcone moieties with different end group were well synthesized. Photopolymer with chalcone group exhibited high photosensitivity and excellent LC alignment capability upon very low UV exposure energy for commercial application to 3D patterned retardation film.
