        Electronic Band Structure and Photocatalytic Activity of M-Doped TiO2(M=Co and Fe)

        Cobalt- or iron-doped TiO2 nanocrystals were fabricated by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The electronic structure and optical properties of the materials were studied by using XRD, UVDRS, and the FP-LAPW (Full-Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave) method. The bandgap energy of Co- and Fe-doped TiO2 obtained by FP-LAPW and UV-DRS was ca. 2.6 and 2.5 eV, respectively. These doped materials absorbed visible light and exhibited photocatalytic activity for oxidative decomposition of CH3Cl to CO2 under visible light irradiation ( > 420 nm). However, only Fe-doped TiO2 showed the activity for CH3Cl degradation to CO2, probably due to its higher oxidation potential, as the FP-LAPW calculation indicated.

      • 최초 진단 당시 다발성의 두개강외 전이를 동반한 미분화성 수막종-증례보고-

        본 저자들은 70세 여자에서 발생한 두개강외의 다발성 전이를 동반한 우측 전두엽의 미분화성 수막종 의 드문 증례를 보고하고자 한다. 상기 환자는 2년여정도 전부터 서서히 자라는 우측 전두엽의 종양을 주소로 내원하였다. 두부 MRI 상 2.5x3.0cm 정도 크기의 종양이 우측 전두엽에 위치하고 있었으며, 종양주변으로의 심한 뇌부종을 동반하고 있었다. 그리고 종양 외측의 두개골에 골파괴성 병변을 포함하 고 있었으며, 두개골 외측의 피하조직내에도 1.0x2.0cm 정도 크기의 종양이 관찰되었다. 침범된 두개골을 포함하여 종양에 대한 전적출술과 함께 두개골성형술이 이루어졌으며, 종양은 조직검사 결과 미분화성 수막종으로 진단되었다. 그리고 간, 척추, 림프절 등에 다발성 전이가 흉복부 CT 촬영 등을 통해 확인되었으나, 환자의 자의로 인하여 더 이상의 검사 및 치료는 중단되었다. 이후 환자는 6개 월 후 우측전두엽의 수막종의 재발로 내원하였고, 간에서의 전이 역시 더욱 진행된 것이 확인되었다. 본 증례에서처럼 두개골 침범을 동반하는 공격적인 모습을 가진 수막종의 경우, 드물지만 전신으로의 두개강외 전이의 가능성을 염두에 두고 최초 진단시 전신에 대한 검사를 고려해야 할 것으로 생각된다. 또한 국소 재발이나 두개강외 전이를 막기 위해 방사선치료 등을 적극적으로 고려하는 것이 재발이나 전이를 막는데 도움이 될 것으로 생각되어 문헌 고찰과 함께 본 증례를 보고하고자 한다

        성인의 급성 심장사에서 정상 심장례의 분석

        The authors analysed 53 cases of sudden cardiac death(SCD) without prominent structural abnormalies of heart out of witnessed 300 cases. Thirty four cases were associated with sleep and 19 with activity or rest. Twenty one cases were classified as having normal hearts, and the rest as structurally mild abnormal ones. Male was predominant, and almost of the victims were suffered in their twenties or thirties. All cases collapsed instantaneously or in very short time with various and not specific terminal symptoms. Inducing or trigger factors are not clarified in almost of the cases. Mechanisms or causes of death could not be defined clearly. We concluded that careful heart examination with detailed clinical history under the appropriate postmortem investigation system is only effective approach for the true mechanism and cause of death.

        X-ray absorption spectroscopy investigations on electronic structure and luminescence properties of Eu:SnO<sub>2</sub>-SnO nanocomposites

        <P>Tin oxide nanostructures are nontoxic in nature and biocompatible. However, they exhibit weak emission characteristics that limit their applications in cellular and biology fields. Therefore, it is important to enhance luminescence properties in this oxide and establish a relationship between the local electronic structure and emission characteristics. In this report, we demonstrate significant advancement in the photoluminescence (PL) properties in the Eu incorporated SnO2-SnO nanocomposites. Eu: SnO2-SnO nanocomposites were synthesized by chemical precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and PL measurements were performed to investigate the structural, electronic structure and emission properties of the samples. Eu3+ ions, as confirmed by the Eu M-5,M-4-edge XANES studies, lead to defect formation and local electronic structural perturbation in the nanocomposites. The O K-edge and Sn M-5,M-4-edge XANES studies confirm a net decrease in the hybridization of O 2p and Sn 5s/5p states and formation of Sn defects, upon Eu doping. Significant enhancement in the Eu3+ related interband transitions (D-5(0)-F-7(J); J = 0,1,2,3,4) is achieved upon increasing the Eu concentrations, indicating synthesis of emission characteristic rich SnO2-SnO nanocomposites.       • 우리나라 1개 농촌 지역 주민의 질병상태에 관한 조사 : 경기도 양주군 수동면 Su-Dong Myun, Yang-Ju Gun, Kyung-Gi Do

        A study on the status of disease in a Korean rural Community, Su-Dong Myun, Yong Ju Gun, Kyung-Gi Do was carried out from December, 28 1978 to January, 19 1979 through analizing the meclical records of Su-Dong Health Subcenter during the period september, 1977 to August, 1978 and following results were obtained. 1. New cases of out patients were 5,695 composed of 49.1% male and 50.9% female during the study period. 2. Cumulative cases of out patients were 9,956 composed of 56.4% male and 43.6% female during the study period. 3. Annual morbidity rate was 908.6 per 1,000 for male and 986.4 for female and average annual morbidity rate was 946.6 per 1,00 population. 4. The highest morbidity rate was 3,660.0 as composed of aged 0∼4, the lowest was 498.4 as composed of aged 10∼14 per 1m000 population per year. 5. Following was the order of five major disease which were classified with I.C.D. ① Diseases of the respiratory system : 33.4% ② Diseases of the digestive system : 21.5% ③ Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue : 15.4% ④ Diseases of the nervous system and sense organs : 7.9% ⑤ Accidents, poisonings and violence : 9.4% 6. The visiting rate in the health subcenter were 2.01 for male, 1.44 for female and the average 1.75 per each out patient. 7. Average medical fee per new case was 653±510 won and average cumulatived fee per case was 923±833 won. 8. The distribution of out patients according to the cost of medical fee, 48.9% of total new patients was treated with less than 500 won and 93.3% of new patients was treated with less than 1,000 won.

      • Identification and characterization of a thermostable endolytic β-agarase Aga2 from a newly isolated marine agarolytic bacteria <i>Cellulophaga omnivescoria</i> W5C

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Research on the enzymatic breakdown of seaweed-derived agar has recently gained attention due to the progress in green technologies for marine biomass utilization. The enzymes known as agarases catalyze the cleavage of glycosidic bonds within the polysaccharide. In this study, a new β-agarase, Aga2, was identified from <I>Cellulophaga omnivescoria</I> W5C. Aga2 is one of four putative agarases from the W5C genome, and it belongs to the glycoside hydrolase 16 family. It was shown to be exclusive to the <I>Cellulophaga</I> genus. Agarase activity assays showed that Aga2 is an endolytic-type β-agarase that produces tetrameric and hexameric neoagaro-oligosaccharides, with optimum activity at 45°C and pH 8.0. Zinc ions slightly enhanced its activity while manganese ions had inhibitory effects even at very low concentrations. Aga2 has a K<SUB>m</SUB> of 2.59mgmL<SUP>−1</SUP> and V<SUB>max</SUB> of 275.48Umg<SUP>−1</SUP>. The K<SUB>cat</SUB> is 1.73×10<SUP>2</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>, while the K<SUB>cat</SUB>/K<SUB>m</SUB> is 8.04×10<SUP>6</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP> M<SUP>−1</SUP>. Aga2 also showed good thermostability at 45°C and above, and retained >90% of its activity after repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Bioinformatic analysis of its amino acid sequence revealed that intrinsic properties of the protein (e.g. presence of certain dipeptides and the relative volume occupied by aliphatic amino acids) and tertiary structural elements (e.g. presence of salt bridges, hydrophobic interactions and H-bonding) contributed to its thermostability.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Endolytic β-agarase Aga2 was identified from <I>Cellulophaga omnivescoria</I> W5C. </LI> <LI> Aga2 optimum activity was at 45°C, pH 8.0, with NA4 and NA6 as major products. </LI> <LI> Aga2 was thermostable at high temperatures as well as after many freeze-thaw cycles. </LI> <LI> Intrinsic properties and tertiary structural elements confer the thermostability. </LI> </UL> </P>

        This paper presents diagnostic criteria for Ménierè’s disease jointly formulated by the Classification Committee of the Bárány Society, The Japan Society for Equilibrium Research, the European Academy of Otology and Neurotology, the Equilibrium Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the Korean Balance Society. The classification includes two categories: definite Ménière's disease and probable Menière's disease. The diagnosis of definite Ménière's disease is based on clinical criteria and requires the observation of an episodic vertigo syndrome associated with low- to me-dium-frequency sensorineural hearing loss and fluctuating aural symptoms (hearing, tinnitus and/or fullness) in the affected ear. Duration of vertigo episodes is limited to a period between 20 minutes and 12 hours. Probable Ménierè's disease is a broader concept defined by episodic vestibular symptoms (vertigo or dizziness) associated with fluctuating aural symptoms occurring in a period from 20 minutes to 24 hours.
