Patients with colorectal cancer may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and anorexia, during surgery and chemotherapy, which can increase the risk of malnutrition. In addition, dietary habits play a key role in the onset of colorectal cancer; therefore, it is necessary to improve dietary habits to prevent recurrence during treatment after diagnosis. In this study, a clinical nutritionist conducted 4 interviews for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and scheduled for colectomy: before surgery, after surgery, 1st chemotherapy, and 2nd chemotherapy, and provided nutrition care for each treatment course to determine its effects on nutrition status and disease prognosis. Significant weight loss but no decrease in muscle mass was observed during treatment. Body fat mass, although not statistically significant, showed a decreasing tendency. The percentage of people who responded ‘yes’ to the below items increased after compared to before receiving nutrition education: ‘I eat meat or eggs more than 5 times a week,’ ‘I eat seafood at least three times a week,’ ‘I eat vegetables at every meal,’ ‘I eat fruits every day,’ and ‘I eat milk or dairy products every day.’ These results indicate that the patients changed their dietary habit from a monotonous eating pattern to a pattern of consuming various food groups after receiving nutrition education. These results suggest that continuous nutrition care by clinical dietitians, according to the patient’s treatment process, can help improve the patient's nutritional status and establish healthy eating habits.
Complete genome sequence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli MFDS1019811 isolated from donut

대장균은 장관감염증과 같은 식중독을 유발하는 식품매개병원균 중 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 2021년 오산의 한 고등학교 급식에서 일어난 식중독 사고의 원인 식품으로 추정되는 도넛으로부터 분리된 Escherichia coli (MFDS1019811)의 유전체 분석을 수행하였다. Escherichia coli MFDS1019811은 5,077,766 bp 길이의 chromosomal DNA와 50,011 bp 길이의 plasmid로 구성되었으며, 각각의 G + C contents는 50.67%와 50.02%로 확인되었다. 유전자 예측 결과, 92개 tRNA, 22개 rRNA, 그리고 chromosome과 plasmid 각각 5,048개와 90개의 단백질 코딩유전자가 동정되었다. 또한, bundle-forming pili(bfp)와 intimin (eae)를 포함한 여러 병원성 유전자들이 확인되었다. Escherichia coli, a foodborne pathogen that causes food poisoning, is implicated in intestinal infections. This study presents the complete genome sequence of enteropathogenic E. coli strain MFDS1019811, isolated from donut sample in 2021, which triggered a foodborne disease outbreak in Osan, South Korea. The complete genome sequence of E. coli strain MFDS 1019811 comprised 5,077,766 bp length chromosomal DNA and a 50,011 bp plasmid, with GC contents of 50.67% and 50.02%, respectively. Gene prediction revealed 92 tRNAs, 22 rRNAs and 5,048, and 90 CDSs on the genome. Several virulence genes were identified including bundle-forming pili (bfp) and intimin (eae).

Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) maps for human stomach tissue proteins have been prepared by displaying the protein components of the tissue by 2-DE and identifying them using mass spectrometry. This will enable us to present an overview of the proteins expressed in human stomach tissues and lays the basis for subsequent comparative proteome analysis studies with gastric diseases such as gastric cancer. In this study, 2-DE maps of soluble fraction proteins were prepared on two gel images with partially overlapping pH ranges of 4-7 and 6-9. On the gels covering pH 4-7 and pH 6-9, about 900 and 600 protein spots were detected on silver staining, respectively. For protein identification, proteins spots on micropreparative gels stained by colloidal Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-250 were excised, digested in-gel with trypsin, and analyzed by peptide mass fingerprinting with delayed extraction-matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (DE-MALDI-MS). In all, 243 protein spots (168 spots in acidic map and 75 spots in basic map) corresponding to 136 different proteins were identified. Besides these principal maps, maps of lower resolution, i.e. overview maps (displayed on pH 3-10 gels) for total homogenate and soluble fraction, are also presented with some identifications mapped on them. Based on the 2-DE maps presented in this study, a 2-DE database for human stomach tissue proteome has been constructed and available at http://proteome.gsnu.ac.kr/DB/2DPAGE/Stomach/. The 2-DE maps and the database resulting from this study will serve important resources for subsequent proteomic studies for analyzing the normal protein variability in healthy tissues and specific protein variations in diseased tissues.
The Incidence, Treatment and Risk Factors of Candidiasis in Very Low Birth Weight Infants

Purpose: Candidiasis is an important morbidity among very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). There is a little data on the risk factors in VLBWI. This study was done to describe the incidence, treatment, and risk factors of candidiasis in VLBWI. Methods: From September 2008 to December 2011, medical records of 130 infants with VLBWI in Inje University Ilsan Paik hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were reviewed retrospectively. Seventeen infants were diagnosed with candidiasis and treated with antifungal agent. Patients were divided into the candidiasis group (CAN, n=17), the bacterial sepsis group (BAC, n=34), and the non-sepsis group (Non-SEP, n=74). Demographic findings and factors associated with candidiasis were compared between these groups. Results: The mean gestational age was significantly low in the CAN group, but birth weight was not significantly different between the groups. The maternal demographic findings were not significantly different between the groups. The incidence of respi- ratory distress syndrome (RDS) is higher in the CAN group compared to these groups (P<0.05). The durations of intubation and central venous line were significantly longer in the CAN group than in the other groups (P<0.05). In the logistic regression analysis, the duration of central venous line is the significant factor for candidiasis (P =0.003, odd ratio: 1.56, 95% confidence interval: 1.39-1.68). Conclusion: The incidence of candidiasis in VLBWI was 13.1 % and the risk factor for candidiasis was longer duration of central venous line in our study.

The objective of this study is to minimize the stress of the crankshaft nose. This research shows comparable results of the stress level at crankshaft nose fillet area which is subject to static loads due to the damper bolt load. This study evaluated how damper bolt types impact on the stress values of crank nose fillet area. The crank nose analysis consists of two steps respectively. First step is to do static analysis by applying the nose assembly loads to obtain stresses. Second step is to do dynamic analyses and combine both static and dynamic stress results to obtain fatigue reserve factors. The crankshaft static analysis utilized ABAQUS and the crank dynamic simulation and fatigue analysis were performed using AVL Excite Power Unit and FE-SAFE.

Background: Recent studies have shown that patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at elevated risk of dementia. However, whether kidney transplantation (KT) lowers the risk for incident dementia remains unclear. Methods: From the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we identified incident KT recipients aged ≥40 years without any history of dementia between 2007 and 2015. We also established a pair of age-, sex-, and inclusion year-matched control cohorts of patients with incident dialysis-dependent ESRD and members of the general population (GP) without a history of dementia, respectively. Cases of incident all-cause dementia, including Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VD), and other kinds of dementia, were obtained from baseline until December 31, 2017. Results: We followed 8,841 KT recipients, dialysis-dependent ESRD patients, and GP individuals for 48,371, 28,649, and 49,149 patient-years, respectively. Their mean age was 52.5 years, and 60.6% were male. Over the observation period, 55/43/19 KT recipients, 230/188/75 dialysis-dependent ESRD patients, and 38/32/14 GP individuals developed all-cause dementia/AD/VD. The risks of incident all-cause dementia, AD, and VD in KT recipients were similar to those in GP (hazard ratio: 0.74 [p = 0.20], 0.74 [p = 0.24], and 0.59 [p = 0.18], respectively) and significantly lower than those in dialysis-dependent ESRD patients (hazard ratio: 0.17 [p < 0.001], 0.16 [p < 0.001], and 0.16 [p < 0.001], respectively). Older age and diabetes mellitus at the time of KT were risk factors for incident all-cause dementia and AD in KT recipients. Conclusion: This is the first study to show a beneficial impact of KT on incident dementia compared to dialysis dependency.
