In order to prove which layer of Cinnamomi cortex had been used in Oriental medicine, the contents of cinnamic acid and cinnamic aldehyde as indexd component on 3 different layers of Cinnamomi Cortex were analysed respectively The results were: 1. The cinnamic acid contents of Cassiae Cortex Interior was 0.135%, inner bark layer, 0.031%, peridium, 0.023%, and average, 0.068%. 2. The cinnamic aldehyde contents of Cassiae Cortex Interior was 1.686%, inner bark layer 0.139%, peridium, 0.183%, and average, 0.696%. From the above results, it is suggested that the main part of Cinnamomi Cortex showed pharmacological activity is its interior.

This study has carried out for evaluation of Trichloroethylene treatment let out at the working place using a silent discharge, one out of methods to control Volatile Organic Compounds. 1. Comparative test for Ozone creation as a function of whether Trichloroethylene included or not, both of them were increased by 270ppm when the electric field intensity goes up(~30kV/cm) and dry air condition included Trichloroethylene were high more or less. It is expected that Trichloroethylene has an influence on Ozone creation as Ozone presecution substance. 2. Input Trichloroethylene concentration and flow rate related to electric field intensity had effect on decomposition efficiency. Trichloroethylene decomposition efficiency increased with rising of applied voltage. But, Treatment efficiency were lower than N₂ condition, in case of using dry air as diluted gas, due to dissipation of electron energy by triplet oxygen molecules. 3. The more increased concentration(100, 200 and 300ppm1, the lower decreased removal efficiency(96, 93.6, 90.3% at N₂ and 86, 84, 90% at dry air) and these tendencies were released at the flow rate(1, 2 and 3 ℓ / min) similarly. 4. Byproducts generated by oxidation of Trichloroethylene-Carbon monooxide, Ozone, Methyl Chloride, Chlorofom, l,l,l-Trichloroethane and Tetrachloroethylene were found out.

A rapid thermal annealing (RTA) apparatus capable of controlling the radiation power density were designed. The titanium silicide grown from thin film Ti (400Å)/Si(111) and TiSi₂.?(700Å)/Si(111) system was processed in an argon ambient by RTA apparatus at the temperature range of 450℃ to 950℃ for 5 to 60 second. The processed specimens had been charaterized by XRD, SEM and AES. From the XRD spectra the phases of the titanium silicides had been changed from Ti?Si₄to TiSi and then TiSi₂by increasing the annealing temperature. XRD and AES results showed that the phase of Ti-silicides was C54 TiSi₂ at annealing temperature of 850℃ for 30 second. The phase of titanium silicides were confirmed by the line shape Si L₂,₃VV and Ti L₃M₂,₃M₂,₃ Auger spectra.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma can arise from preexisting differentiated carcinoma and generally show dire prognosis. It usually occurs in the intrathyroid or regional lymph node, but can be developed in the metastatic site rarely. We report a case of an 69-year old man who, 7 months after being treated with total thyroidectomy and I-131 therapy for papillary thyroid carcinoma, presented with anaplastic transformation in pleural metastatic site. Another interesting point in our case is patient showed an high white blood cell count. We performed him bone marrow biopsy for evaluating the cause of leukocytosis. But, there was no bone marrow involvement of malignant cells and no evidence of hematologic malignancy. Based on elevated serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) levels, it maybe due to paraneoplastic leukocytosis. And his WBC count decreased temporarily after systemic chemotherapy. Considering his clinical course, I-131 therapy maybe accelerate to anaplastic transformation. Clinicians, who treat well differentiated thyroid carcinoma, should be aware of the possibility of anaplastic transformation and should keep in mind that leukocytosis can be a initial sign of that change.

Marked neutrophilia associated with neoplasia is a relatively rare finding and has been considered as a paraneoplastic manifestation. Thyroid cancer seldom presents with paraneoplastic leukocytosis. We report on a case of a 69-year-old man who presented with paraneoplastic leukocytosis seven months after undergoing total thyroidectomy and I-131 therapy for treatment of papillary thyroidcarcinoma. We found neither bone marrow involvement of malignant cells nor hematologic malignancy. Based on elevated levels of serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, we concluded that the cause was paraneoplastic leukocytosis. <P><B>Background</B></P><P>Cancer stemness, observed in several types of glioma stem cells (GSCs), has been demonstrated to be an important barrier for efficient cancer therapy. We have previously reported that cancerous neural stem cells (F3.Ras.CNSCs), derived from immortalized human neural stem cells by a single oncogenic stimulation, form glial tumors in vivo.</P><P><B>Method</B></P><P>We searched for a commonly expressed stress modulator in both F3.Ras.CNSCs and GSCs and identified silent mating type information regulation 2, homolog (SIRT1) as a key factor in maintaining cancer stemness.</P><P><B>Result</B></P><P>We demonstrate that the expression of SIRT1, expressed in “cancer cells with neural stemness,” is critical not only for the maintenance of stem cells, but also for oncogenic transformation. Interestingly, SIRT1 is essential for the survival and tumorigenicity of F3.Ras.CNSCs and GSCs but not for the U87 glioma cell line.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>These results indicate that expression of SIRT1 in cancer cells with neural stemness plays an important role in suppressing p53-dependent tumor surveillance, the abrogation of which may be responsible not only for inducing oncogenic transformation but also for retaining the neural cancer stemness of the cells, suggesting that SIRT1 may be a putative therapeutic target in GSCs.</P>

Fresh and chopped aerial parts of Oryza sativa were extracted in 80% aqueous mehthanol, and the concentrated extract was successively partitioned using n-hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), nbutanol, and H2O. From the EtOAc fraction, a new flavonolignan (2) and a known flavonolignan, salcolin B (1), were isolated through repeated SiO2 and octadecyl silica gel column chromatography. Based on NMR, mass spectrometer, and IR spectroscopic data, the chemical structure of compound (2) was determined to be tricin-4`-O-[erythro-β-guaiacyl-(7``-O-methyl)- glyceryl] ether, which has thus far never been reported and was named salcolin C (2). Salcolin B (1) and salcolin C (2) dose-dependently inhibited nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells with IC50 values of 29.8±0.6 and 10.8±1.0 μM, respectively, without visible toxic effect.
