Background music (BGM) is the music that is not to be listened actively or purposefully; thus, it can be limited to music that is to be heard unintentionally rather than intentionally for an appreciation for music. BGM is extending its application scope even to the field of music therapy since its influence is recognized in the fields of social psychology and cerebrum physiology. Also, there has been a growing interest in the impact of background music on performance of tasks in relation to academic performance from an educational viewpoint. This study developed the self-generated background music (SG-BGM) for each individual in consideration of the characteristics of each student with disabilities rather than the existing background music. In addition, this study examined whether an ability to perform tasks could be enhanced by utilizing these developed background music. For this study, the 7 subjects (mental retardation) for the level of experiment subjects were selected in consultation with the teachers of three special classes who gave consent to the experiment through the phone interview in advance among those special classes in D region and K region. This study developed the SG-BGM based on the sound, which was created when the aforementioned 7 subjects had the most outstanding performance in their task, as the sound source. Also, this study reviewed the effect of SG-BGM by comparing the task performance when hearing the SG-BGM with the task performance when performing the task in the usual way. As a result of the experiment, all of the 7 subjects were found to perform the task better when hearing the SG-BGM than the task performance in the usual way. Moreover, they were found to have a higher level of concentration for the task.
