유아교육 분야의 메타분석 논문에 대한 고찰 = A review of meta-analysis research in early childhood education

This study examines research trends in early childhood education articles using meta-analysis, which has lately been introduced to the field of early childhood education. The level of quality of these papers was assessed in accordance with their compliance to the standards set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA) in its Meta-Analysis Reporting Standards (MARS). Thirty papers using meta-analysis were selected for analyses. They consisted of theses and dissertations presented in Korea between 1990 and February, 2014, and journalarticles published during the same period. Our examination finds that, with only one exception, the word meta-analysis was included in the title of every paper as directed by MARS, and the abstracts, introduction and conclusions of the papers were relatively in compliance with MARS. But there were some problems with the research methods. The problem areas included inufficient description of missing data, the selection of meta-analysis model, how to deal with outliers and how to calculate effect sizes. In terms of research procedure, there wasn`t enough mention of data research methods, coding processes and there was a lack of collaborator or Coding agreement. These are considered to be essential elements to producing valid results with the application of a research method suitable to the purpose of a study. Only if the requirements for these elements are all satisfied, is it possible to do a meta-analysis study which provides evidence critical to decision making in education and contributing to academic development.
