국제입양인의 정체성 형성과정에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Identity formation Process of intercountry Korean Adoptees

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study purports to construct a theory explaining the actual identity formation process of intercountry Korean adoptees. The in-hand research question is ‘what is the process of intercountry Korean adoptees’ and the author collects and analyzes the data based on the guidance of the Grounded Theory of Strauss and Corbin(1998) and Charmaz(2006). The data were collected from those 13 intercountry Korean adoptees who have built up identity and gone through adolescence. The author visited USA and performed in-depth interviews for 1 year and 3 months(2009.5- 2010.8). The major findings are as follows. First, open coding results in 262 concepts, 55 sub-categories followed by 16 more abstracted concepts. Second, category analysis by paradigm indicates that causal conditions are ‘cognition of adoption’ and ‘feeling as an alien’. And central phenomenon is ‘identity crisis’. Contextual conditions are ‘acceptance of other races’, ‘pessimistic point of view against adoptees(adoption)’and ‘condition and mode of adoptive family’. Third, intervening conditions are ‘social support’, ‘support of people around’ and ‘positive attitudes toward their own lives’. Fourth, strategies include ‘deny the ethnicity identity’ and ‘roots searching’. And consequences are ‘on going journey for finding identity’ and ‘self accepting’. Fifth, adoptees tend to experience five major processes in their periods; deny stage, exploration stage, transition stage, formation stage, stable stage. Finally, core category is ‘self accepting beyond crisis’. In the final section, some remarks on theory and practices in the field as well as limitations of this study are added.
