어머니들이 구성한 유아 바깥놀이의 의미: 안전과 위험부담 딜레마를 중심으로 = Mothers`Notions of Childhood Outdoor Play：Focused on Safety vs. Risk-Taking Dilemma

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aimed to investigate maternal notions of children’s outdoor play, embedded in the cultural context of the contemporary Korean society. Based on Cultural Psychology, we illuminated their perceptions of safety and risk-taking on playground and how their perspectives may change when exposed to different cultural practices. Participants of this study consisted of 10 mothers of young children, living in Daegu city. The data were collected through individual interviews with mothers, and video-cued focus group interviews. The collected data were analyzed using the QSR NVivo 9.0 program. Participating mothers expressed their deeply-seated anxiety regarding safety issues on playground as mothers taking a primary responsibility of child-rearing, although they recognized values of outdoor play to enhance their child’s development. However, watching outdoor play in other cultures gave mothers an opportunity to critically look at their views of outdoor play, which affected their perceptions of risk-taking to become shifted. These findings imply that perspectives of mothers who have critical influences on their child are influenced by social contexts and deeply-residing cultural values, and more importantly, these cultural understandings are not fixed but open to meaningful changes.
