The present study examined how mothers perceive outdoor play in early childhood education centers. The purpose of this study was to provide theoretical grounding to enhance and activate outdoor play program in early childhood education centers. In order to investigate this purpose, study issues were as follows:
1. What is the mothers’ perception on outdoor play facilities in day-
care centers?
2. What is the mothers’ perception on outdoor play management in day care centers?
3. What is the mothers’ perception on the educational meanings and improvement ways of outdoor play in day care centers?
For this study, a survey was conducted on 294 mothers of young children, aged 3 to 5, enrolled at kindergartens in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon, and the data was analyzed by χ2 tests.
The followings are the results.
1. Mothers’ perception on outdoor play facilities in early childhood education centers was investigated, revealing mothers’ acknowledgement that outdoor play was run in most of the early childhood education centers, and each education center accompanies outdoor space specially designed for children’s outdoor play. Furthermore, grass-field was the most preferred type of playground, and space for gross-motor activities was singled out as the outdoor play facility requirement. These must-have facilities include equipments for complex play, sand play, balls, and mini wares for role plays.
2. The way of running outdoor play programs which mothers desire the early childhood education center to have was inquired. Mothers reported that it’s desirable to perform outdoor play 3 or 4 times a week with a flexible schedule according to other activities on the day, and for 21 to 30 minutes. The most important matter the mothers estimated in running outdoor play program was safety, especially safety of the facilities and teachers’ role for children’s safety.
3. Educational meaning of mothers’ perception on outdoor-play’s and the way of improvement were investigated. It was found that mothers considered the outdoor play is necessary because it can help children's development. In addition, they agreed on the educational meaning of outdoor play. They said it helps children to be healthier both mentally and physically. The most concerned area in outdoor play management was how to keep the facilities safe and clean. Mothers pointed out that the facilities and equipments are needed to be checked regularly for its best condition to be guaranteed.
