      Today medical tourism is perceived as a potentially lucrative niche market in both health and tourism industry. There is evidence that the market is a recent global economic trend which has attracted the attention not only of healthcare providers and consumers but also of scholars and researchers from academic disciplines. These trend and attention have made current efforts to better understand medical tourism and provide practical ways to promote markets for medical travel.

      However, little or no research has examined travel behavior of medical tourists and thus there is a limited discussion on the basis of travel motivation, service quality, and tourist attitudes. This dissertation fills the gap in the literature and contributes to knowledge of medical tourists' behavior. The aim of the research were therefore four-fold. Firstly, it was to identify medical travel motivation and medical service quality. Secondly, it was to explore the relationship between medical travel motivation and medical service quality. Thirdly, it was to explore the relationship between medical service quality and tourist attitudes. Finally, it was to reveal medical tourists with respect to socio-demographics, medical travel related behavior and characteristics. This was achieved by collecting empirical data on medical tourists who visiting Korea for the purpose of medical services.

      The methodology comprised quantitative research based on self-completed questionnaire. A total of 500 questionnaire were distributed at the selected 25 hospitals and travel agencies, of which 230 completed questionnaires were collected, and only 213 self-completed questionnaires out of those collected were included for consideration in the data analysis. An exploratory factor analysis was employed to identify each of three medical travel motivation(medical travel experience, health recovery/recharge, medical expense/service) and medical service quality(credibility, tangibles, responsiveness). A structural equation model(SEM) using LISREL program was then performed to test hypotheses whether significant relationships exited between medical travel motivation and medical service quality. Similarly, the same analysis was also used to find out whether medical service quality using SERVPERF model has significant effect on tourist attitudes including satisfaction and loyalty(intention to revisit/recommend). Finally, using frequency analysis medical tourists were then featured in respect to socio-demographics and medical travel related behavior and characteristics.

      Results revealed that medical expense/service has negative effect on credibility, while health recovery/recharge has positive effect on responsiveness. However, medical expense/service has positive effect on credibility, but it has negative effect on responsiveness. Results also indicated that both tangibles and responsiveness of service quality have significant effect on tourists attitudes of both satisfaction and loyalty. Based on the findings of medical tourists behavior and attitudes, this research suggests marketing and managerial implications for hospitals or medical service institutions.

      The research is of benefit not only to academics and practitioners in the study of travel behavior and attitudes in the field of medical tourism industry, but also to health marketers and planners in the planning, marketing and managing of medical travel services/products.
