        Effects of colored polyethylene film mulch on pest populations, plant growth and yield of peanut in Northern China

        Polyethylene film mulching is commonly used in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production, an important oil crop. Clear polyethylene film (CLEF) has previously been the only choice for all growing conditions. However, colored polyethylene film has been applied to the cultivation of crops in recent years, so testing the effects of colored film mulches on peanuts is necessary. In this study, we observed the effects of eight colored polyethylene films on devastating pest abundance, plant growth and yield, and soil conditions in peanut fields. The results showed that light-silver-gray film (LSGF), silver-black on both sides film (SGBF), and black film (BLAF) mulches were more effective in reducing the pest population (aphids, thrips, and mites) compared to plants mulched with other films. In addition, SGBF and LSGF mulching accelerated seeding emergence and benefited peanut growth, and the yield increased by about 20% compared to peanuts mulched with CLEF. The soil temperature and humidity under the LSGF and SGBF treatment were more suitable for peanut growth compared to the other film treatments. In conclusion, LSGF and SGBF mulches were appropriate choices for managing pests, maintaining optimum soil conditions, and increasing yield in peanut production.

        Directional Water Transport in Fabrics by Varying Yarn Coordination and Texture Design

        Directional water transport fabric plays a pivotal role in personal thermal management. However, it has remained a greatchallenge to reach the target only by texture design and yarn coordination. Here, we reported a trilayered woven fabric (TWF)with directional water transport performance by combining a hierarchical microporous structure and asymmetric wettability. The TWF is composed of interweaved plain weave layer (PWL), basket weave layer (BWL) and float layer (FL), whichprovides the continuous water transfer paths by the continuous warp yarns that move back and forth in the thickness directionof the fabric. The asymmetric structure of the TWF endows the fabric with excellent directional water management property,which can be tailored by the fineness and the wetting state of weft yarn in the three layers, and the groove structure on thesurface of the PWL. The resulting TWF exhibited a high directional water transport index R (435%). The mechanism for thedirectional water transport of the BWF was investigated by analyzing the capillary force, hydrostatic pressure and hydrophobicforce. Moreover, the universality of the fabric design approach was verified by two kinds of bilayered woven fabrics (BWFs)which have an analogous texture to the TWF. Therefore, the reported method for designing directional water transport fabricthrew light on developing eco-friendly water management textiles with good durability for demanding situations.

      • Aberrant Expression of HOXA5 and HOXA9 in AML

        Background: Aberrant expression of HOX gene expression has been observed in cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the alteration of HOXA5 and HOXA9 expression and their clinical significance in acute meloid leukemia (AML). Materials and Methods: The expression of HOXA5 and HOXA9 genes of bone marrow samples from 75 newly diagnosed AML patients and 22 healthy controls for comparison were examined by Real-time quantitative PCR (RQ-PCR) assay. Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate HOXA5 and HOXA9 expression as possible biomarkers for AML. Results: The results showed that the complete remission rate (52.6%) of the patients who highly expressed HOXA5 and HOXA9 was significantly lower than that (88.9%) in patients who lowly express the genes (P=0.015). Spearmann correlation coefficients indicated that the expression levels for HOXA5 and HOXA9 genes were highly interrelated (r=0.657, P<0.001). Meanwhile, we detected significant correlations between HOXA9 expression and age in this limited set of patients (P=0.009). Conclusions: The results suggest a prognostic impact of increased expression of HOXA5 and HOXA9 in AML patients.
