      • Bayesian pollution source identification via an inverse physics model

        Hwang, Youngdeok,Kim, Hang J.,Chang, Won,Yeo, Kyongmin,Kim, Yongku Elsevier 2019 Computational statistics & data analysis Vol.134 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The behavior of air pollution is governed by complex dynamics in which the air quality of a site is affected by the pollutants transported from neighboring locations via physical processes. To estimate the sources of observed pollution, it is crucial to take the atmospheric conditions into account. Traditional approaches to building empirical models use observations, but do not extensively incorporate physical knowledge. Failure to exploit such knowledge can be critically limiting, particularly in situations where near-real-time estimation of a pollution source is necessary. A Bayesian method is proposed to estimate the locations and relative contributions of pollution sources by incorporating both the physical knowledge of fluid dynamics and observed data. The proposed method uses a flexible approach to statistically utilize large-scale data from a numerical weather prediction model while integrating the dynamics of the physical processes into the model. This method is illustrated with a real wind data set.</P>

      • More buzz, more vibes: Impact of social media on concert distribution

Cho, Daegon,Hwang, Youngdeok,Park, Jongwon Elsevier 2018 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC BEHAVIOR & ORGANIZATION Vol.156 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper examines the impact of social media on decision-making regarding concert locations in the music industry. The use of social media allows musicians to communicate directly with their current and potential fans, which provides useful information about where concerts will be more successful. In particular, with the use of social media, musicians are likely to reach out relatively unexplored regions in choosing their concert locations. To examine the effect of social media use on the distribution of concert locations, we introduce an empirical methodology, using a zero-inflated generalized linear mixed model with a log link function. The model accounts for potential heterogeneous locational and temporal traits, allowing us to measure the impact of characteristics of the population on location selection. The parameters estimated from this model support an argument that the use of social media encourages musicians to pursue unexplored markets that they may not have considered before the use of social media.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We investigate the impact of the use of social media on the geographic distribution of concert locations. </LI> <LI> We apply a zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) model and isolate the effect of the use of social media from the overall temporal trend. </LI> <LI> We find that musicians tend to reach out the less populous places for concerts where they had not given a concert before, after they create personal pages on YouTube, Twitter, and/or Facebook. </LI> </UL> </P>

Perceived Physical and Mental Health and Healthy Eating Habits During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Korea

        Tuakli-Wosornu Yetsa A,Pandiyan Uma,Stratton Catherine,Hwang Youngdeok,Abderrazak Hajjioui,Muñoz-Velasco Laura Paulina,Fourtassi Maryam,Cooper Rory,Balikuddembe Joseph K,Peterson Mark,Andrei Krassiouk 대한의학회 2022 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.37 No.15

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted the lives of people around the world since 2020. This study aims to reveal perceived impact of the coronavirus pandemic on physical and mental health and eating behaviors among people with disabilities and without disabilities in South Korea, as compared to other countries. Methods: A secondary analysis of a prospective cross-sectional study which was conducted with a web-based global survey. Results: Among the 3,550 responses from 65 countries, 2,621 responses with nation information were set as full data, 189 for South Korea and 2,432 for other countries. In Korea, there was no significant difference in healthy lifestyle behaviors between people with and without disabilities before the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived physical and mental health and changes in eating habits during the COVID-19 pandemic showed no significant difference between people with and without disabilities in Korea. There were significant differences in physical health and dietary habits, but no differences in its effect on mental health between people living in Korea and other countries in both people with and without disabilities groups. In other words, more than 60% of people in all groups (disability vs. non-disability, Korea vs. non-Korea) reported worse mental health than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: In Korea and other countries, mental health showed a tendency to deteriorate regardless of the presence or absence of disability during the COVID-19 pandemic. In terms of healthy eating habits, Koreans were relatively less affected than people from other countries.

The Role of Regular Physical Therapy on Spasticity in Children With Cerebral Palsy

        Heewon Lee,Eun Kyung Kim,Dong Baek Son,Youngdeok Hwang,Joon-Sung Kim,Seong Hoon Lim,Bomi Sul,Bo Young Hong 대한재활의학회 2019 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine Vol.43 No.3

Objective To investigate the effect of physical therapy (PT) intervention on spasticity in patients with cerebral palsy (CP), and to assess the degree of deterioration of spasticity when regular PT is interrupted in those patients. Methods We recruited 35 children with spastic CP who visited our hospital for PT, and whose Modified Tardieu Scale (MTS) scores were serially recorded including before and after a 10-day public holiday time frame period. The outcome measures were the angle of range of motion (ROM) of dorsiflexion of the ankle joint (R1 and R2) in the knee flexion and extension positions as assessed using the MTS. Results The range of dorsiflexion of the ankle joint (R1 and R2) after the holiday period was significantly decreased as compared with that measured ROM noted before the holiday period, regardless of the knee position, age, or gross motor function. The dynamic component of the MTS (R2–R1) showed a slight decrease in the knee flexion position. Conclusion Interruption of regular PT aggravated spasticity and decreased ankle joint ROM in children with spastic CP. Our findings suggest that regular PT in the care continuum for children with CP is crucial for the maintenance of ROM in the spastic ankle joints.
