Objectives : The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between -1438A/G polymorphism of 5-HT2A receptor gene and schizophrenia in Korean and Han Chinese population. Methods : A sample of 184 Korean patients with schizophrenia and 96 Korean healthy normal controls and 96 Han Chinese patients with schizophrenia and 96 Han-Chinese healthy normal controls were genotyped for a single nucleotide polymorphism with in 5-HT2A receptor gene (promoter region, A-1438G) by Msp I Resthction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP). Results : There was no difference in allelic frequencies and genotype frequencies of -1438A/G polymorphism between Korean schizophrenics and controls (p=0.13) and Han Chinese schizophrenics and controls (p=0.40). Also, -1438A/G Poly-morphism did not show ethnical difference between Korean and Han Chinese controls. The Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) scores showed no significant differences between genotypes of -1438A/G polymorphism in both of Korean and Han Chinese schizophrenics. Conclusion : These results suggest that -1438A/G polymorphism of the 5-HT2A receptor gene is not causally related to the development of schizophrenia in Korean and Han Chinese population, and there no ethnic difference between Korean and Han Chinese population.

The city road landscape is the important constitution of the city, and it connects a city to the whole in a netted and linear form in order to become the good ecosystem. The road landscape has many functions such as vista buildup, improving microclimate of streets and traffic convenience. Greenbelt affects the landscape view and appearance with abundant effects, various positions and changeful season colors. The good or bad of the city road landscape have great effect in spirit civilization of people. For people living in the city, the improving of street landscape quantity can strengthen the pride of citizens and accelerate the material and spiritual civilization construction. For fluid populations those are not native, because they dwell for some time and spend on streets most of time. For this reason, city road landscape should first consider the function and property. Secondly, people’ apperceive of streets not only involves road surface itself, but also the building beside streets, the trees square scenery, billboard, crossroads and so on. A series of these things work to come onto being the whole image of streets, which influence the image of city.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of MDR1 gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: A total of 689 HCC patients and 680 cancer-free subjects were enrolled. Human MDR1 gene polymorphisms were investigated by created restriction site-polymerase chain reaction (CRS-PCR) and DNA sequencing methods. Multiple logistic regression models were applied to estimate the association between MDR1 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to HCC. Results: We detected a novel c.4125A>C polymorphism and our findings suggested that this variant was significantly associated with susceptibility to HCC. A significantly increased susceptibility to HCC was noted in the homozygote comparison (CC versus AA: OR=1.621, 95% CI 1.143-2.300, ${\chi}^2$=7.4095, P=0.0065), recessive model (CC versus AC+AA: OR=1.625, 95% CI 1.167-2.264, ${\chi}^2$=8.3544, P=0.0039) and allele contrast (C versus A: OR=1.185, 95% CI 1.011-1.389, ${\chi}^2$=4.4046, P=0.0358). However, no significant increase was observed in the heterozygote comparison (AC versus AA: OR=0.995, 95% CI 0.794-1.248, ${\chi}^2$=0.0017, P=0.9672) and dominant model (CC+AC versus AA: OR=1.106, 95% CI 0.894-1.369, ${\chi}^2$=0.8560, P=0.3549). Conclusions: These findings suggest that the c.4125A>C polymorphism of the MDR1 gene might contribute to susceptibility to HCC in the Chinese population. Further work will be necessary to clarify the relationship between the c.4125A>C polymorphism and susceptibility to HCC on larger populations of diverse ethnicity.

<P>In this study, hypoxia-responsive chitosan nanoparticles (HRCNs) were synthesized by the conjugation of nitro-benzyl derivatives into chitosan polymers and the subsequent self-assembly of them with hydrophobic fluorophores. The nitro-benzyl substrate of HRCNs could be selectively reduced by NTR/NADH that was overexpressed under hypoxic conditions, while it was not responsive to reductive agents (GSH or DTT) commonly existing in biological systems. The HRCN encapsulated with Rhodamine 6G (HRCN-R6G) was successfully applied for the rapid determination of the hypoxic status of lung carcinoma cells (A549) within 30 min, while several hours were required in a conventional assay. In the hypoxic microenvironment, the fluorescence intensity of HRCN-R6G was 2.6-fold higher than that in normoxic conditions. Taken together, the HRCN-R6G is expected to be used for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of hypoxia-related acute diseases, after the incorporation of therapeutic drugs into them.</P>

Device quality indium tin oxide (ITO) films are deposited on glass substrates and ultra-thin diamond-like carbon films are deposited as a buffer layer on ITO by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 355 nm and 532 nm wavelength. ITO films deposited at room temperature are largely amorphous although their optical transmittances in the visible range are > 90%. The resistivity of their amorphous ITO films is too high to enable an efficient organic light-emitting device (OLED), in contrast to that deposited by a KrF laser. Substrate heating at 200℃ with laser wavelength of 355 nm, the ITO film resistivity decreases by almost an order of magnitude to 2×10-4 Ω cm while its optical transmittance is maintained at > 90%. The thermally induced crystallization of ITO has a preferred <111> directional orientation texture which largely accounts for the lowering of film resistivity. The background gas and deposition distance, that between the ITO target and the glass substrate, influence the thin-film microstructures. The optical and electrical properties are compared to published results using other nanosecond lasers and other fluence, as well as the use of ultra fast lasers. Molecularly doped, single-layer OLEDs of ITO/(PVK+TPD+Alq3)/Al which are fabricated using pulsed-laser deposited ITO samples are compared to those fabricated using the commercial ITO. Effects such as surface texture and roughness of ITO and the insertion of DLC as a buffer layer into ITO/DLC/(PVK+TPD+Alq3)/Al devices are investigated. The effects of DLC-on-ITO on OLED improvement such as better turn-on voltage and brightness are explained by a possible reduction of energy barrier to the hole injection from ITO into the light-emitting layer.
