        Diff erences in the Acoustic Emission Characteristics of 345 MPa Normal-Strength Steel and 460 MPa High-Strength Steel

        This study characterized 345 MPa normal-strength steel (NSS) and 460 MPa high-strength steel (HSS) with the acoustic emission (AE) technique. Pencil lead break (PLB) and tensile tests were performed, and the generated AE signals were recorded. The AE signals from the PLB tests were converted into the frequency and time-frequency domains via a fast Fourier transform (FFT) and wavelet transform. The AE signals generated during the tensile process were divided into four stages for analysis. The AE parameters, such as the counts, amplitude, hit and duration, were extracted from the signals. An FFT was conducted to obtain the features of frequency spectrum at each stage. The comparisons revealed the similarities and diff erences in the AE characteristics between the two steels. It was found that the energy of the AE signals for the 460 MPa HSS was less overall than that of the 345 MPa NSS. The analysis results indicated that the AE technique is a method that can potentially be used to distinguish the two steels, and additional studies for accurate identifi cation are needed. As 460 MPa HSS is being widely used but related AE studies are limited, this study provides data for additional investigations of the damage in HSS structures with the AE method.

        Stability region of floating intermediate support in a shaft system with multiple universal joints

        A floating intermediate support is designed to reduce kinematic and dynamic fluctuations caused by the change of joint angles in ashaft system with multiple universal joints. The dynamic equation of the shaft system is derived via the principle of virtual work, whichsuggests the angular displacement of the input shaft is the only independent variable. A drive shaft system used in an articulated dumptruck is taken as an example to analyze the sensitivities of shaft speed and input torque of the system about structural parameters andsystem variables, which proves the effectiveness of floating support to attenuate the kinematic and dynamic fluctuations of the shaft system. The stability region of floating support aimed at shaft speed and input torque of the system keeping relatively stable is obtained bysetting proper upper limits of objectives, and the analysis results are verified by dynamic simulation in MapleSim platform, which ishelpful to decide proper stiffness and damping or determine an optimum control strategy for floating angle of support in design.

        Genetic parameter estimation for reproductive traits in QingYu pigs and comparison of carcass and meat quality traits to Berkshire×QingYu crossbred pigs

        Objective: The QingYu pig is well known for its excellent meat quality attributes in Sichuan province, China. In order to improve its production efficiency, the determination of genetic factors contributing to quantifiable economic traits of livestock is important. Moreover, the cross-breeding of QingYu pigs with western breeds possessing strong growth attributes is an efficient way to improve the performance of this breed. Methods: Here, the genetic parameters of several important reproductive traits of QingYu pigs were estimated, include total number born (TNB), number born alive, litter birth weight, individual birth weight, number of piglets weaned, litter weaning weight, and individual weaning weight. The data was analyzed using the ASReml 3.0 software (NSW Inc., Sydney, Australia). Furthermore, the effects of crossing Berkshire with QingYu (BQ) pigs on carcass and meat quality traits, as well as the effects of slaughter weight on carcass and meat quality of BQ were characterized. Results: QingYu pigs exhibited superior reproductive traits. The TNB available to QingYu pigs was more than 8 per parity. The observed repeatability of the reproductive traits of the QingYu pigs was between 0.10 and 0.23. The significantly correlated genetic and phenotypic of reproduction traits were consistent. Interestingly, the BQ pigs exhibited improved carcass quality, with a significant increase in loin muscle area, lean percentage and reduction in sebum percentage. As a result, BQ had higher L45min, lower cooking scores, and lower drip loss. In addition, the loin muscle area, body length, and sebum percentage were significantly higher in 90 and 100 kg animals. Cooking loss showed a significant increase at 80 kg, and marbling increased significantly from 90 kg. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that QingYu pigs exhibit excellent reproductive properties and heritability of these traits. Crossing with Berkshire is an efficient strategy to improve the carcass and meat quality of QingYu pigs for commercial operations. Furthermore, it appears as though the optimal slaughter weight of BQ pigs is at approximately 90 kg.

      • A Novel Experimental Measurement Method of Transformer Parasitic Capacitances

        As the increase of switching frequency and the extensive use of planar transformers, the capacitive effects of transformers can’t be neglected anymore. Firstly, several transformer parasitic capacitance models are introduced in this paper. Next, this paper proposes a novel experimental method, charge balance method, to measure transformer parasitic capacitances. This method is applicable to single lumped parasitic capacitance model. Finally, the step response method is performed to verify the charge balance method. Experimental results show that the charge balance method is of high accuracy.

        Heteroatoms in situ-doped hierarchical porous hollow-activated carbons for high-performance supercapacitor

        Heteroatoms in situ-doped hierarchical porous hollow-activated carbons (HPHACs) have been prepared innovatively by pyrolyzation of setaria viridis combined with alkaline activation for the frst time. The micro-morphology, pore structure, chemical compositions, and electrochemical properties are researched in detail. The obtained HPHACs are served as outstand�ing electrode materials in electrochemical energy storage ascribe to the particular hierarchical porous and hollow structure, and the precursor setaria viridis is advantage of eco-friendly as well as cost-efective. Electrochemical measurement results of the HPHACs electrodes exhibit not only high specifc capacitance of 350 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, and impressive surface specifc capacitance (Cs) of 49.9 μF cm−2, but also substantial rate capability of 68% retention (238 F g−1 at 10 A g−1) and good cycle stability with 99% retention over 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1 in 6 M KOH. Besides, the symmetrical supercapacitor device based on the HPHACs electrodes exhibits excellent energy density of 49.5 Wh kg−1 at power density of 175 W kg−1 , but still maintains favorable energy density of 32.0 Wh kg−1 at current density of 1 A g−1 in 1-ethy-3-methylimidazolium tetrafuoroborate (EMIMBF4) ionic liquid electrolyte, and the excellent cycle stability behaviour shows the nearly 97% ratio capacitance retention of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles at current density of 2 A g−1. Overall, the results indicate that HPHACs derived from setaria viridis have appealing electrochemical performances thus are promising electrode materi�als for supercapacitor devices and large-scale applications.
