      • Boosting oxygen reduction catalysis with abundant copper single atom active sites

        <P>With their high catalytic activity, stability, selectivity, and 100% atom utilization, single atomic non-noble metal based materials are valuable alternatives to efficient but expensive Pt based catalysts. For efficient catalysis, single-atom catalysts must expose abundant single atomic metal active centers. Here, we report the rational design and synthesis of a Cu single-atom catalyst with high Cu content of over 20.9 wt%, made of single atomic Cu anchored into an ultrathin nitrogenated two-dimensional carbon matrix (Cu-N-C). The high Cu content was achieved by the introduction of additional N species, which can securely trap and protect the Cu atoms. During oxygen reduction, the single atomic Cu exhibited over 54 times higher mass activity than metallic Cu nanoparticles at a potential of 0.85 V <I>versus</I> a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Furthermore, the Cu-N-C exhibited 3.2 times higher kinetic current at 0.85 V (<I>vs.</I> RHE), and a much lower Tafel slope (37 mV dec<SUP>−1</SUP>), as well as better methanol/carbon monoxide tolerance and long-term stability than commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Cu active sites exhibit improved O-O bond stretching and favorable adsorption energies of O2 and OOH for four-electron oxygen reduction.</P>

        기후적 이점에 기반한 섬지역의 개발모델: 중국 하이난 섬의 경험을 중심으로

        섬이 갖는 독특한 특성은 현대 사회가 갖는 인구와 자원의 압박으로 인하여 대부분의 나라에서 중요하게 고려된다. 본 연구는 중국에서 두 번째로 큰 섬인 하이난 섬의 개발 과정을 살펴보고, 관광지로써 섬 개발의 요인을 분석하고자 한다. 오랫동안 이 섬은 정치적·경제적 중심지로부터 멀리 떨어져 있고 고립되어 있다는 지리적·사회적 특성 때문에 유배지로써 간주되었다. 이러한 특성으로 하이난 섬의 경제적·문화적 개발은 오랫동안 중국 대륙지역의 개발에 가려져 뒤쳐져 왔다. 그러나 1978년 이후 하이난이 가지는 독특한 기후적 이점을 이용하여 열대관광 상품 개발, 부동산 개발, 열대농업 및 새로운 양식의 청정산업 등의 개발을 통하여 사회적으로나 경제적으로 비약적으로 발전하게 되었다. 이러한 경제적 모델은 다른 섬지역의 개발에 실제적인 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것이다. The exceptional advantages of islands are attached great importance by all of the countries in modern societies which are under population and resource pressure. This study examines the development of Hainan Island, the second largest island in China which goes the same situation. For a long time in history, this island was regarded as a transporting place for exiles due to the social and geographic characteristics including remoteness, isolation from political and economic centers. As a result, the economic and cultural development of Hainan Island had been dropped behind by the continental areas for a long time. However, since 1978, taking full advantage of its unique climate resources, the Hainan Island has been undergoing great development socially and economically through developing tropical tourism industries, real estate, tropical agriculture and new pattern undefiled industries. This economic model can be used as a practical reference for other islands? development.

        NlCDK1 gene is required for the ovarian development and survival of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stål, as revealed by RNA interference

        CDK1 is a kind of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) involved in diverse biological processes besides cell cycleregulation in various species. However, little is known about CDK1 in Nilaparvata lugens Stål (brown planthopper,BPH). In this study, the full-length cDNA of NlCDK1, a CDK1 gene in BPH, was obtained using rapidamplificationof cDNA ends (RACE) technique. RT-qPCR revealed that the expression of NlCDK1 was relativelylow and stable at nymph stages from 1st star to 5th star, but increased to higher levels in gravid females 3 day to5 day post-eclosion. Feeding-based RNA interference (RNAi) with 0.5 μg/μL dsNlCDK1 achieved an efficientknockdown of target gene expression in females after being fed with dsRNA for 6 days, and the mRNA level ofNlCDK1 decreased to 19.9% in comparison with that of the dsGFP control. As a result, RNA inerference withdsNlCDK1 caused a significant decrease of the BPH survival rate to 28.0% of that for the control. RNAi of NlCDK1also suppressed the ovarian development and significantly affected the fecundity of the females, leading to a70.2% reduction to the number of the offspring. These data suggest that NlCDK1 is required for the ovariandevelopment and survival of the brown planthopper.

        White Tea (Camellia sinenesis (L.)) Ethanol Extracts Attenuate Reserpine-induced Gastric Ulcers in Mice

        The gastroprotective effect of white tea extract ethanol (WTEE) on reserpine induced gastric ulcers in KM mice was investigated. Gastric juice secretion, the pH of gastric juice, serum neuropeptides, including motilin (MOT), substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and somatostatin (SS) levels, and serum levels of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, IL-12, and IFN-γ were measured. WTEE dose-dependently reduced reserpine-induced gastric juice secretion and increased the pH of gastric juice. WTEE increased serum levels of VIP and SS and reduced levels of MOT, SP, and inflammatory cytokines in the serum. WTEE modulated gastric expression of occludin and p38 phosphorylation in ulcer-bearing mice. WTEE has a gastroprotective effect against reserpine-induced gastric ulcers in KM mice via reduction of gastric juice secretion, modulation of serum neuropeptide levels, attenuation of serum inflammatory cytokines, and regulation of gastric levels of occludin and p38 phosphorylation.

        Ultrastructural changes of Haematococcus pluvialis (Chlorophyta) in process of astaxanthin accumulation and cell damage under condition of high light with acetate

        Haematococcus pluvialis is a commercial microalga that can produce high quantities of astaxanthin. Under induced conditions, some important changes in the subcellular structures related to astaxanthin accumulation were observable. For example, a large number of astaxanthin granules, oil structures and starch granules appeared in the thick-walled cells; Astaxanthin granules gradually dissolved into the oil structures and spread throughout the entire cell with the fusion and diffusion process of oil structures during the middle and late stages of induction; The plastoglobules were closed to the newly formed structures, and some plastoglobules would abnormally increase in size under stress. Based on observations of cell damage, the degradation of membrane structures, such as chloroplasts, was found to be the primary form of damage during the early stage of induction. During the middle stage of induction, some transparent holes were exposed in the dissolving astaxanthin granules in the cytoplasm. In thick-walled cells, these transparent holes were covered by oil substances dissolving astaxanthin, thereby avoiding further damage to cells. Given the relatively few oil structures, in non-thick-walled cells, the transparent holes expanded to form multiple transparent areas, eventually resulting in the rupture and death of cells. These results suggested that the high level of synthesis and the wide range diffusion of oil explained the expansion of astaxanthin in H. pluvialis.
