Sleeping with Beauty : Romantic Love, Sex, Power and the Construction of Femininity in Heterosexual Young Adult Relationships

Louise Vincent,Caryn McEwen Research Institute of Asian Women Sookmyung Women' 2005 Asian Women Vol.20 No.-

This article draws on solicited diary entries detailing the lives and loves of eight young undergraduate women at an elite institution of higher education in South Africa. The research participants are occupants of a privileged place in society with access to education, and a middle-class lifestyle, have control over their reproductive functioning, are not wives, mothers or homemakers, and potentially have access to fulfilling, status-rich and materially rewarding occupations which make independence both of their parental families and of male partners a real possibility. Theirs then, is a world of information, choice and opportunity and if of anyone at all in society we would predict the emergence of a critical gender consciousness, it might be of these woman. One way of gauging the extent of the emergence of a critical consciousness among women is to examine the extent to which, in the stories they tell about their intimate relationships, they depart from, or conform to both the content and structure of the traditional romance genre and in particular, to the positioning of themselves in their stories as passive, submissive, dependent subjects while their partners are dominant and active. The present article argues that far from the democratisation of intimacy, the young, seemingly privileged and empowered women in the study remain locked into romantic narratives of love with their concomitant passive construction of femininity. In a social context characterised by putative sexual emancipation, these young women find themselves in the unenviable position of having to play a game of liberated sexual and gender politics while at the same time living a reality of feminine oppression.

      • Whalers’ Shanties of Barouallie, St. Vincent: Observations on the Nature, Decline and Revival of a Unique Caribbean Maritime Tradition

2007 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.2 No.-

Barrouallie, a fishing community on the Caribbean islandof St. Vincent, has a unique cultural heritage associatedwith its history as a whaling centre. As a way to alerttownspeople of a successful catch, Barrouallie whalerssang occupational songs known as ‘shanties’ while rowingtheir whaleboats to shore. A product of diverse culturalinfluences, the shanties of Barrouallie may be viewed as asub-genre, distinct from the more general body of seachanteys, the work songs of international 19th centurymerchant seamen. As a mode of expression - not merelya work song -a shanty could function variously asentertainment, satire, and advertisement. While economicand cultural changes in this developing island nation didnot favour the continuance of shanty singing, a revival ofinterest in Barrouallie’s whaling traditions began in 2001,with particular attention to shanties and the generation ofmen who recall the role and significance of these songs inthe local whaling enterprise. This 21st century renaissance of a maritime musictradition among living practitioners represents aremarkable survival that deserves greater recognition. Through the performance and recording of shanties, TheBarrouallie Whalers have been interpreting andpublicising Barrouallie’s whaling heritage for aninternational audience since 2001.

      • Locating and Utilising Inherent Qualities in an Expanded Sound Palette for Solo Flute

        Alice Bennett(알리스 베넷),Vincent Giles(빈센트 길레스) 한국전자음악협회 2015 에밀레 Vol.13 No.-

이 글은 빈센트 길레스Vincent Giles가 실시간으로 분광 영역 마이크로사운드 증폭 소프트웨어SDMAS(Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software)를 사용한 플루트 연주에 관하여 기술한다. In the search for an idiosyncratic improvisatory language of solo flute performance, it is sometimes necessary to move beyond the scope of traditional and extended techniques into the world of instrument-extension through computers. To this end, Alice Bennett’s creative work leads to the exploration of new electroacoustic techniques, searching for ways to expand the available sonic palette. This paper documents an electronically-extended flute performance utilising Vincent Giles’ Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software (SDMAS) in real-time. The SDMAS amplifies soft sounds relative to loud, by real-time input, shifting the partials by amplitude around an amplitude-based pivot point. The result is that these otherwise-inaudible partials increased to audibility alongside the higher amplitude partials, drastically altering the perceived timbre of the instrument or instruments being treated. This allows the performer/composer to not only discover, but to exploit a greater range of timbres than are available to a purely acoustic instrument. These explorations lead to a sonically enriched and idiosyncratic improvisatory language based on this hyper-instrument configuration.

      • Simulated Annealing Hyperheuristic Framework for the Retail Shelf-Space Allocation Problem with Non-linear Profit Function

Vol.2015 No.11

Retail space allocation problem decides on the optimal product mix on the shelves to maximize profitability. However, when profitability depends on the space given to each shelved product, the issue on which item to display and how much space to allocate becomes imperative when space is scarce. This article presents a numerical study to solve a single category shelf-space allocation problem with non-linear profit function using a Simulated Annealing hyperheuristic framework embedded with low –level heuristics. Real-life case and a simulated large instance are both covered in this article. Results from the proposed algorithm reveal comparable performance in both profit and computation time.

      • Dose Planning Study of Target Volume Coverage with Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: Penang General Hospital Experience

Vincent Phua, Chee Ee,Tan, Boon Seang,Tan, Ai Lian,Eng, Kae Yann,Ng, Bong Seng,Ung, Ngie Min Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.4

Background: To compare the dosimetric coverage of target volumes and organs at risk in the radical treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) between intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT). Materials and Methods: Data from 10 consecutive patients treated with IMRT from June-October 2011 in Penang General Hospital were collected retrospectively for analysis. For each patient, dose volume histograms were generated for both the IMRT and 3DCRT plans using a total dose of 70Gy. Comparison of the plans was accomplished by comparing the target volume coverage (5 measures) and sparing of organs at risk (17 organs) for each patient using both IMRT and 3DCRT. The means of each comparison target volume coverage measures and organs at risk measures were obtained and tested for statistical significance using the paired Student t-test. Results: All 5 measures for target volume coverage showed marked dosimetric superiority of IMRT over 3DCRT. V70 and V66.5 for PTV70 showed an absolute improvement of 39.3% and 24.1% respectively. V59.4 and V56.4 for PTV59.4 showed advantages of 18.4% and 16.4%. Moreover, the mean PTV70 dose revealed a 5.1 Gy higher dose with IMRT. Only 4 out of 17 organs at risk showed statistically significant difference in their means which were clinically meaningful between the IMRT and 3DCRT techniques. IMRT was superior in sparing the spinal cord (less 5.8Gy), V30 of right parotid (less 14.3%) and V30 of the left parotid (less 13.1%). The V55 of the left cochlea was lower with 3DCRT (less 44.3%). Conclusions: IMRT is superior to 3DCRT due to its dosimetric advantage in target volume coverage while delivering acceptable doses to organs at risk. A total dose of 70Gy with IMRT should be considered as a standard of care for radical treatment of NPC.

      • Scheduling in the Transportation Sector, Current Trends and the Road Ahead

Vol.1 No.1

Many large transportation and logistic companies have used state of the art scheduling technologies in the past 5 years. What was considered high risk projects just S years ago in the industry, are now becoming quite common in many places and especially in South East and East Asia where transportation companies have to demonstrate continuous increase in productivity. The author would like to share with audience some of his experience with important success stories in the transportation sector in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Achieving a successful scheduling based applications is never easy, several parameters and traps will determine success or failure, while at the same time, the transportation industry is increasingly demanding such $quot;intelligent$quot; systems. We call this state the time of the $quot;quickening$quot; where the need for experienced and well trained consultant (whether from Academia or the Industry) will play a vital role.

Balloon catheter cannulation for route identification and axis stabilization during direct freehand cholangioscopy

2019 Gastrointestinal Intervention Vol.8 No.1

Freehand techniques for direct cholangioscopy access have received little attention, given disappointing initial results and high perceived and/or real technical challenges. However, while pure freehand intubation appears feasible in a significant proportion of individuals, technical advance-ments and tricks of the trade are being developed. Along these lines, herein I present another rescue technique assisting in freehand access for direct cholangioscopy, the “balloon-catheter-cannulation technique”, which may be instrumental in overcoming two major hurdles of the procedure, i.e., stable intubation of the papillary orifice with adequate orientation and scope advancement in the common bile duct vis-à-vis gastric loop formation. To further disseminate direct cholangioscopy in the endoscopy community, technical beyond technological advancements, as for instance dedicated next-generation cholangioscopes, appear essential. Herein, I present a technical case report focussing on the limitations of the pure freehand and relative advantages of the “balloon catheter cannulation-assisted” approach for direct cholangioscopy access.

      • Backup Plans and Creative Problem-Solving: Effects of Causal, Error, and Resource Processing

2013 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.23 No.2

Creative problem-solving involves not just the generation of ideas, but also the formation of plans for implementing these ideas. In plan execution, however, especially when plans for implementing creative ideas are formulated, unexpected events occur. As a result backup planning can be expected to contribute to creative problem-solving. In the present study, undergraduates were asked to formulate an initial plan, backup plans, and a final plan for restructuring a company. Final plans were evaluated for quality, originality, and elegance while backup plans were appraised for key attributes such as detailedness and depth. It was found that the attributes of backup plans were positively related to the quality, originality, and elegance of solutions to the creative problem. Moreover, stronger backup plans were obtained when people were primed to think about resource requirements. The implications of these findings for understanding the role of planning in creative problem-solving are discussed.
