Sleeping with Beauty : Romantic Love, Sex, Power and the Construction of Femininity in Heterosexual Young Adult Relationships

Louise Vincent,Caryn McEwen Research Institute of Asian Women Sookmyung Women' 2005 Asian Women Vol.20 No.-

This article draws on solicited diary entries detailing the lives and loves of eight young undergraduate women at an elite institution of higher education in South Africa. The research participants are occupants of a privileged place in society with access to education, and a middle-class lifestyle, have control over their reproductive functioning, are not wives, mothers or homemakers, and potentially have access to fulfilling, status-rich and materially rewarding occupations which make independence both of their parental families and of male partners a real possibility. Theirs then, is a world of information, choice and opportunity and if of anyone at all in society we would predict the emergence of a critical gender consciousness, it might be of these woman. One way of gauging the extent of the emergence of a critical consciousness among women is to examine the extent to which, in the stories they tell about their intimate relationships, they depart from, or conform to both the content and structure of the traditional romance genre and in particular, to the positioning of themselves in their stories as passive, submissive, dependent subjects while their partners are dominant and active. The present article argues that far from the democratisation of intimacy, the young, seemingly privileged and empowered women in the study remain locked into romantic narratives of love with their concomitant passive construction of femininity. In a social context characterised by putative sexual emancipation, these young women find themselves in the unenviable position of having to play a game of liberated sexual and gender politics while at the same time living a reality of feminine oppression.

      • Whalers’ Shanties of Barouallie, St. Vincent: Observations on the Nature, Decline and Revival of a Unique Caribbean Maritime Tradition

2007 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.2 No.-

Barrouallie, a fishing community on the Caribbean islandof St. Vincent, has a unique cultural heritage associatedwith its history as a whaling centre. As a way to alerttownspeople of a successful catch, Barrouallie whalerssang occupational songs known as ‘shanties’ while rowingtheir whaleboats to shore. A product of diverse culturalinfluences, the shanties of Barrouallie may be viewed as asub-genre, distinct from the more general body of seachanteys, the work songs of international 19th centurymerchant seamen. As a mode of expression - not merelya work song -a shanty could function variously asentertainment, satire, and advertisement. While economicand cultural changes in this developing island nation didnot favour the continuance of shanty singing, a revival ofinterest in Barrouallie’s whaling traditions began in 2001,with particular attention to shanties and the generation ofmen who recall the role and significance of these songs inthe local whaling enterprise. This 21st century renaissance of a maritime musictradition among living practitioners represents aremarkable survival that deserves greater recognition. Through the performance and recording of shanties, TheBarrouallie Whalers have been interpreting andpublicising Barrouallie’s whaling heritage for aninternational audience since 2001.

      • Locating and Utilising Inherent Qualities in an Expanded Sound Palette for Solo Flute

        Alice Bennett(알리스 베넷),Vincent Giles(빈센트 길레스) 한국전자음악협회 2015 에밀레 Vol.13 No.-

이 글은 빈센트 길레스Vincent Giles가 실시간으로 분광 영역 마이크로사운드 증폭 소프트웨어SDMAS(Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software)를 사용한 플루트 연주에 관하여 기술한다. In the search for an idiosyncratic improvisatory language of solo flute performance, it is sometimes necessary to move beyond the scope of traditional and extended techniques into the world of instrument-extension through computers. To this end, Alice Bennett’s creative work leads to the exploration of new electroacoustic techniques, searching for ways to expand the available sonic palette. This paper documents an electronically-extended flute performance utilising Vincent Giles’ Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software (SDMAS) in real-time. The SDMAS amplifies soft sounds relative to loud, by real-time input, shifting the partials by amplitude around an amplitude-based pivot point. The result is that these otherwise-inaudible partials increased to audibility alongside the higher amplitude partials, drastically altering the perceived timbre of the instrument or instruments being treated. This allows the performer/composer to not only discover, but to exploit a greater range of timbres than are available to a purely acoustic instrument. These explorations lead to a sonically enriched and idiosyncratic improvisatory language based on this hyper-instrument configuration.

      • BEYOND A DYADIC VIEW ON VALUE CO-CREATION: A MULTI-ACTOR PERSPECTIVE FROM BUSINESS NETWORKING EVENTS

2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.6

The events industry continues to grow and is estimated to be worth around 30 billion dollars yearly involving more than 50 million trips worldwide. MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) offer opportunities for business networking, business development and customer loyalty, and are used for internal company purposes as well as for external commercial gain. However, capturing the value of any given MICE appears difficult and relatively little is known about how customers engage in co-creation and there are few models or frameworks. Moreover, dyadic encounter and value from a provider perspective ignore the measurement of customer value in multi-actor service encounters. The research questions posed by this study were therefore: How do multi-actor service encounters differ from dyadic ones? Do current value frameworks capture all the value created in these encounters? And how can multi-actor service providers increase customer value? To address these questions, we embarked on a qualitative study with 35 actors (attendees, organizers, speakers) from networking events, using a service-dominant logic approach to conceptualizing customer perceived value from networking events. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first empirical studies to address the joint creation of value in service encounters characterised by multiple providers (provider network approach) and multiple customers (customer group approach) at the same time and studied from the perspectives of both sides. In answering our first research question of how do multi-actor service encounters different from dyadic ones, we first identify several characteristics that define multi-actor services and compare them to traditional one-to-one services. Our second research question asked whether current value taxonomies capture all the value created in these encounters and we conceptualised the dimensions of event value (social, professional, learning, emotional and hedonic), and show how these relate to existing value taxonomies, as well as highlighting professional value which is new and novel to event encounters. Thirdly, in answering how multi-actor service providers can increase customer value, we supplement previous research on customer value from the providers’ view by adding how the design and execution of service impacts customer value. From this managerial perspective, our study brings new perspectives for event management in understanding when and where value is created and therefore when and how it should be measured. In terms of assessing interaction and engagement, we have found that few practices are in place. We suggest that observation within an event setting could be complemented by video recording.

A Cognitive-pragmatic Approach to Discourse Topic: A Cross-linguistic Analysis and Universal Account

2007 Journal of Universal Language Vol.8 No.1

This paper investigates contemporary Mandarin Chinese and English discourse topic across text genres to render plausible interpretations based upon a relevance-theoretic approach, as opposed to previous studies from syntactic/structural and functional/ cognitive points of view. Examining discourse topic from a cognitive-pragmatic perspective will not merely facilitate readers with more accessible contextual effects such as implicatures, but also subtopics such as grounding and composite topics can also be approached layer by layer with regard to cognition and language. This plays a crucial role in perception, comprehension and interpretation of utterances and non-verbal communication, and hence the mental processes of assigning/deciding a topic. The topic may thus vary from a word, short phrases to a sentence, and, above all, it is the gist that inferred by the audience that eventually forms the basis for the topic of the text/discourse.

Dharmakīrti and His Commentators’ Views on the Transformation of the Basis and the Status of the Ālayavijñāna

2016 International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Cultur Vol.26 No.2

The scholarly understanding of Dharmakīrti’s arguments in favor of idealism has greatly improved in the past few years. However, many aspects of this philosopher’s position remain unclear. In particular, the gnoseological and psychological foundations of his denial of the external world remain little known: Does he accept an Ālayavijñāna or not? And if yes, is this ālayavijñāna the same as the eighth vijñāna of “classical” idealism? What does āśraya refer to in the expression āśrayaparivṛtti? In addition to addressing these and similar questions, the present paper aims at summarizing what can be said in the light of past and present research on the topic of Dharmakīrti’s idealism.

Hybrid Approach-Based Sparse Gaussian Kernel Model for Vehicle State Determination during Outage-Free and Complete-Outage GPS Periods

2016 ETRI Journal Vol.38 No.3

To improve the ability to determine a vehicle’s movement information even in a challenging environment, a hybrid approach called non-Gaussian square root-unscented particle filtering (nGSR-UPF) is presented. This approach combines a square root-unscented Kalman filter (SR-UKF) and a particle filter (PF) to determinate the vehicle state where measurement noises are taken as a finite Gaussian kernel mixture and are approximated using a sparse Gaussian kernel density estimation method. During an outage-free GPS period, the updated mean and covariance, computed using SR-UKF, are estimated based on a GPS observation update. During a complete GPS outage, nGSR-UPF operates in prediction mode. Indeed, because the inertial sensors used suffer from a large drift in this case, SR-UKF-based importance density is then responsible for shifting the weighted particles toward the high-likelihood regions to improve the accuracy of the vehicle state. The proposed method is compared with some existing estimation methods and the experiment results prove that nGSR-UPF is the most accurate during both outage-free and complete-outage GPS periods.

Current status of high-intensity focused ultrasound for the management of uterine adenomyosis

2017 ULTRASONOGRAPHY Vol.36 No.2

While high-intensity focused ultrasound has been used for some time in the management of uterine fibroids, its effectiveness and safety in managing adenomyosis is less well established. A literature review was performed of all eligible reports using this modality as a treatment for adenomyosis. Relevant publications were obtained from the PubMed electronic database from inception through March 2016. Eleven articles, including information from 1,150 treatments and follow-up data from 990 patients, were reviewed. High-intensity focused ultrasound appears to be effective and safe in the management of symptomatic adenomyosis, and can be considered as an alternative uterine-sparing option for women with this condition.

Numerical investigation of transient side-loads in the start-up process of a rocket nozzle

2010 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.24 No.2

A numerical investigation of transient side-loads in axisymmetric over-expanded thrust optimized contour nozzles is presented. These nozzles experience side-loads during start-up and shut-down operations because of flow separation at the nozzle walls. Two types of flow separations, FSS and RSS shock structures, also occur. A two-dimension numerical simulation was carried out over axisymmetric TOC nozzles to validate the present results and investigate oscillatory flow characteristics for start-up processes. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Governing equations are solved via the coupled implicit scheme. The Reynolds Stress turbulence model is selected for this work. It was found that the present computed pressure at the nozzle walls closely matched the experimental data. The phenomenon of hysteresis was also observed between these two shock structures. The transition from an FSS to RSS pattern during the start-up process showed maximum nozzle wall pressure and fluctuations in shear stress values. Oscillatory pressure was observed on the nozzle walls with high pressure ratio. The present results show that the magnitude of nozzle wall pressure variation is high for the phenomenon of oscillation.
