Erectile Function and Sexual Activity Are Declining in the Younger Generation: Results from a National Survey in Japan

Purpose: Twenty five years have passed since the first national survey on erectile dysfunction (ED) in Japan. The Japanese Society for Sexual Medicine conducted a nationwide survey on the actual status of sexual function targeting men over 20 years old in Japan using validated questionnaires commonly used in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: Japanese men aged 20 to 79 years participated in our online epidemiological study on sexual dysfunction. Erectile status was assessed by direct questioning and specific questionnaires. Risk factors and frequencies of sexual intercourse, masturbation, nocturnal erections, and feeling sexual desire were assessed. The prevalence of these risk factors was compared between men with and without ED. Prevalence and frequencies were calculated for each 5-year age group. Main outcomes were the prevalence and number of patients with ED and simultaneous evaluation of age-related variations. Results: Direct questioning of the men revealed that 13.0% felt troubled by ED. Although 81.0% of them had at least some ED symptoms based on a Sexual Health Inventory For Men score of ≤21, the prevalence of men with ED by Erection Hardness Score (EHS), the most appropriate questionnaire for Japanese with low sexual activity, was 30.9%, indicating that 14,012,596 men have ED. Most risk factors were related with ED, whereas frequencies of sexual intercourse, masturbation, nocturnal erections, and feeling sexual desire were affected by aging. However, the low frequency of these factors in the young generation was surprising. Conclusions: The EHS-based assessment revealed a prevalence of ED of 30.9%, which affected approximately 14 million men, and that the sexual desire, erection stiffness, orgasms, and satisfaction were lower than expected in young Japanese men, especially those aged 20 to 24 years, although those factors tended to worsen with aging. We believe that these findings actually reveal the current sexual status of men in Japan.

A Construction-Based Approach to Phrasal Adjuncts in Japanese

The adverbial phrases consisting of NP-o NP-ni in Japanese exhibit a set of properties that are not apparent from each of the elements comprising them. There is no source for the Accusative Case and the constituents cannot be scrambled internal to the phrase. Furthermore, the phrase has a general meaning that provides the circumstantial background for the event described by the main clause. This article presents a construction-based approach to the adverbial phrases which recognizes them as a grammatical construction to which a set of unpredictable syntactic and semantic properties should be attributed.

Peace and Gender : Toward the construction of "Peace as Human Rights" theory

War, in itself, is a violation of human rights. Based on this principle, we will examine “peace as human rights” and its connection with gender from a comprehensive view on gender, human rights & peace. Concerning the relationship between peace and human rights, it is profitable to understand the historical meaning of “the right to live in peace” guaranteed in the Preamble to the Japanese Constitution, through a comparative analysis of pacifist constitutions. Concerning the relationship between peace (or war, armed forces) and gender (or women’s human rights), many international documents have proved the oppression of women during wartime on one hand, and the increasing participation of women in military service on the other. In this antagonism (the thorny issues of feminism), what is women’s responsibility to peace? I hope we could contribute, even in a small way, to the building of a “gendering strategy for peace and women’s human rights” toward the construction of “Peace as Human Rights” theory. 전쟁은 본질적으로 인권에 대한 침해이다. 이 원칙에 기초하여, “인권으로서의 평화”에 관해 고찰하고, 젠더, 인권, 평화에 대한 포괄적인 관점에서 젠더와의 연관에 대해 고찰할 것이다. 평화와 인권의 관계에 대하여는, 평화헌법에 대한 비교법적 연구를 통해 일본 헌법 전문에서 보장하는“평화롭게 살 권리”의 역사적 의미에 대해 이해하는 것이 좋다. 평화(또는 전쟁, 군대)와 젠더(또는 여성의 인권)의 관계에 대해서는 많은 국제 선언이나 협약(international document)들이 전쟁 기간 동안의 여성억압을 증명하는데, 다른 한편으로는 여성의 군 복무 증가 현상이 있다. 이와 같은 대립[페미니즘의 곤란한 문제(the thorny issues of feminism)]이라는 측면에서, 여성의 평화에 대한 책임이란 무엇을 말하는가? 헌법 이론과 반전 이론에 대하여“평화와 여성 인권을 위한 젠더 관점에서의 전략(gendering strategy)”수립에 미약하게나마 기여하였으면 한다.

High-Resolution Optical Measurement of Fiber Optics Transmission Line Length

This paper studies a frame-loss-free shunt system for broadband optical fiber transmission lines. This system switches transmitting optical pulses between duplicated optical fibers to avoid any interruption to communication. A high-resolution measurement technique is necessary to evaluate the optical fiber length. We applied an interferometry technique to adjust 15 km duplicated optical lines at a resolution of 10 mm. An optical line switching system and procedure are designed for use in replacing in-service optical lines. A free space optics (FSO) system adjusts the length of an in-service optical line by up to 100 m. A gigabit ether-passive optical network (GE-PON) line is successfully replaced with an extended line while maintaining transmission.

Optimum Injection and Combustion for Gaseous Fuel Engine -Chemical kinetic analysis for hydrogen auto-ignition phenomena-

We focused on the hydrogen fueled, direct-injection diesel engine in an inen gas circulation type co-generation system which had been proposed by WE-NET project. In this study, chemical kinetic analysis with a detailed chemi-cal kinetic model for hydrogen was conducted to understand the characteristic of auto-ignition phenomena with investigating the effects of temperature, pressure, fuel concentration, and third body concentration in hydrogen mixture on auto-ignition delay time. It was found that temperature of mixture had a strong effect on auto-ignition delay especially at less than 1100 K. It is found that richer mixture ignites earlier, and that the increase in third body concentration causes the increase in auto-ignition delay time because third body dilutes chemical species related with auto-ignition. Moreover as supposed that mixture is formed in a cylinder by means of direct-injection method, it is clarified that third body concentration and temperature in the mixture vary with the change in equivalence ratio of the mixture, and it can be supposed that leaner mixture spontaneously ignites earlier because temperature of lean mixture is higher than one of rich mixture.<br/> <br/>

The Relationship between Testosterone Deficiency and Men’s Health

Testosterone is important in the physiology of various organs and tissues. The serum testosterone concentration gradually declines as one of the processes of aging. Thus, the concept of late-onset hypogonadism has gained increasing attention in the last few years. Reported symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism are easily recognized and include diminished sexual desire and erectile quality, particularly in nocturnal erections, changes in mood with concomitant decreases in intellectual activity and spatial orientation, fatigue, depression and anger, a decrease in lean body mass with associated decreases in muscle volume and strength, a decrease in body hair and skin alterations, and decreased bone mineral density resulting in osteoporosis. Among these various symptoms, sexual dysfunction has been the most common and necessary to treat in the field of urology. It is well known that a low serum testosterone level is associated with erectile dysfunction and hypoactive sexual libido and that testosterone replacement treatment can improve these symptoms in patients with hypogonadism. Recently, in addition to sexual dysfunction, a close relationship between metabolic syndrome, characterized by central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, and late-onset hypogonadism has been highlighted by several epidemiologic studies. Several randomized control trials have shown that testosterone replacement treatment significantly decreases insulin resistance in addition to its advantage for obesity. Furthermore, metabolic syndrome is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and a low serum testosterone level is closely related to the development of atherosclerosis. Presently, it is speculated that a low serum testosterone level may increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. Thus, testosterone is a key molecule in men’s health, especially that of elderly men.
