      • Estimation of Rain Attenuation Characteristics of Satellite Communication Links using X-band Meteorological Radars

        Rain attenuation characteristics of the Ku-band up-link satellite signals are presented for the past four years of 2003-2006 in Japan and Indonesia, using Japan’ domestic communication satellite Superbird C that connects Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere of Kyoto University (RISH) to Equatorial Atmosphere Radar Observatory (EAR). Compared with the rainfall rates with the same time percentages, equivalent path lengths of the satellite signal against the rain area are shown to be reduced down to 2 km at EAR, which is remarkably shorter than those at RISH in Japan. The almost same attenuation values and annual statistics are, however, obtained from the X-band radar observations simultaneously conducted at EAR. This suggests that long-term radar observations of convective clouds are effective to estimate rain attenuation statistics of the satellite signals in the tropical regions.

        Two Cases of Severe Type 2 Respiratory Failure Associated with Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis

        Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a non-inflammatory process characterized by hyperostosis at tendon insertions and around joint capsules and ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament of the spine. The flexibility of the spinal column is reduced in DISH and affects the movement of the thorax, leading to restrictive ventilatory function. In this report, we describe the first two cases of severe type 2 (hypercapnic) respiratory failure associated with DISH. Two older men presented with histories of shortness of breath. Radiography of the spine revealed DISH with coexisting ankylosis of the costovertebral joints. The patients’ thoracic motion was severely restricted, reducing the mechanism of lung expansion to diaphragm contraction only. Both patients required non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation therapy to cope with their conditions. Our report sheds light on the risk of potentially life-threatening respiratory manifestations of DISH among older adults.

      • Fundamental Study on Nutritional Evaluation for Rapeseed Meal

        식물유자원으로서 사용이 증가되고 있는 유채에 대한 영양학적인 기초연구를 목적으로 유채의 일반성분, glucosinolate, amino acid 분석을 시도하였다. 또한 유채종자의 주 성분인 단백질의 품질을 측정하기 위하여 20% 수준의 단백질을 사료로 Wistar계 수컷쥐를 사육하여 사료효율(FER), 단백질효율(PER), 정미단백질효율(NPU), 소화율(TD) 및 생물가(BU)를 측장하였으며 장기중량과 혈액성분도 아울러 조사했다. 조단백질량은 탈지대두 45.5%, 탈지유채종자 37.9%였고, 조섬유량은 탈지대두 5.0%에 비료해서 탈지유채 종자에서는 10.5%로 약 2배였다. 또한 glucosinolate량은 0.04%였다. 탈지유채종자군은 탈지대두군과 비교해서 체중 증가에 유의차는 인정되지 않았으며, 동등한 성장을 나타냈다. 장기중량, 혈중성분에도 특별히 유의한 차이는 없었다. 또한 정미단백질효율도 유의차가 없었다. Rat에 의한 in vivo 실험에서 탈지유채 종자에 많이 함유된 단백질은 탈지대두단백질과 거의 동등한 영양적 가치를 갖는 것으로 생각되며, 앞으로 식품에의 응용 이용이 가능하다고 할 수 있다. This fundamental study was undertaken to evaluate the nutritional value of Canola rapeseed meal which has been increasingly used as a by-product with the demand for the food oil resource. To compare the nutritive values among rapeseed meal and soybean meal, two experiments were carried out by using rats. One was a digestibility test of rapeseed meal and the other was the growth rate of rats for 21 days. The chemical compositions, glucosinolate and amino acids of defatted rapeseed meal and defatted soybean meal were analyzed. After one week feeding, nitrogen excretion in rats was measured to study FER, PER, TD, BW, and NPU of the meals. The amount of crude proteins in defatted rapeseed meal and defatted soybean meal were 45.5% and 37.9%. The glucosinolate content of defatted rapeseed meal was 0.04%. The body weight gain of defatted rapeseed meal was not significantly different from that of defatted soybean meal(p>0.01). After one week feeding, there was no significant defferences in organ weights and serum components between two groups(p>0.01). It was presumed that the rapeseed meal has enough possibility for developing food to use as a protein source like a soybean meal protein. However, more careful experiments are needed to dlarify the nutritional value of rapeseed meal of Canola since the lipids composition of blood tended to be different when the rapeseed meal and soybean meal were used.

        The Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization to the Sward on Guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq cv. Gatton) Silage Fermentation

        To investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the quality of tropical grass silage, guinea grass grown with 3 types of nitrogen fertilizers, namely, urea, ammonium sulfate, and compound fertilizer 804, at 2 fertilization levels, 0.5 and 2.5 kg $Na^{-1}$ (0.5 N and 2.5 N, respectively), was subjected to silage fermentation. Silage fertilized with 0.5 N showed butyrate-dominant fermentation, irrespective of the type of fertilizer used. On the other hand, fermentation of silage fertilized with 2.5 N was significantly affected by the type of fertilizer used; fertilization with ammonium sulfate and compound fertilizer 804 resulted in silage that contained a large amount of butyrate and no lactate; this silage was considered to be of a significantly low quality as compared with silage fertilized with 0.5 N. Among silage fertilized with 2.5 N, the desirable butyrate-free fermentation was found only in urea-fertilized silage, which had the best quality. Grass material fertilized with a high level of urea accumulated a relatively high concentration of nitrate nitrogen (0.22% dry matter). Our results presented here suggest that nitrogen fertilizer management could affect the quality of tropical grass silage and that a relatively high concentration of nitrate in silage may promote butyrate-free fermentation even in tropical grass silage.

        찹쌀밥의 주요 휘발성 성분

        The volatile components of cooked glutinous rice were investigated. Among more than 100 volatile components of fresh cooked rice, the predominant one was hexanal followed by pentanal, butanal, octanal, heptanal, noananal, acetone and toluene. These eight components comprised about 85% of the total volatiles, and the hexanal comprised about 86% total amount of the eight volatile components. the amount of the eight volatile components and hexanal in cooked glutinous rice were six and nine times more than that of cooked nonglutinous rice, respectively. The amount of volatile components in cooked glutinous rice stored for 72 hours at 70℃ was same with that of in nonglutinous rice immediately after cooking.
