        Three new harpacticoid copepods for Korea from marine interstitial habitats

        Recent integrative taxonomic research demonstrated a high endemism of Korean copepods, with closest relatives usually in neighboring countries. Although Korean fauna could be considered well-studied, some marginal habitats still provide unexpected discoveries of copepods described from distant parts of the world. Here I report three such examples. Two belong to the family Tetragonicipitidae: Phyllopodopsyllus thiebaudi santacruzensis Mielke, 1989 and Laophontella horrida dentata Mielke, 1992; one to the family Ancorabolidae: Laophontodes norvegicus George, 2018. Scanning electron microscope photographs are provided for the first time for all three species, revealing unknown details of complex three-dimensional structures and ornamentation of somites. Phyllopodopsyllus thiebaudi santacruzensis was described from the Galapagos Islands, while Laophontella horrida dentata was described from the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica; for both this is the second record, which extends their range into the Western Pacific. Laophontodes norvegicus was described from Norway; this Korean record is its first in the Pacific. The first species is represented in my samples by numerous males, females, and juveniles. However, the second one is represented by one adult male and one juvenile female, while the third is represented by a single adult male, which might suggest that the marine interstitial is not their preferred habitat in Korea.

        Two new Phyllopodopsyllus (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from Korean marine interstitial

        The genus Phyllopodopsyllus T. Scott, 1906 is nearly cosmopolitan and contains around 60 valid species, but has not been previously recorded in Korea. One of the reasons is probably the paucity of research in marginal habitats, such as marine interstitial. I describe two new species here. Numerous specimens of both sexes of P. kitazimai sp. nov. were collected from a beach near Yeongdeok, while only two females of P. busanensis sp. nov. were collected from a beach near Busan. The new species differ in numerous macro-morphological characters, such as the segmentation and armature of the antennula, armature of the mandibula, maxillula, maxilliped, and the first three swimming legs, as well as the shape of the caudal rami and the female genital field. However, they show very little difference in the number and position of cuticular organs (pores and sensilla) on all somites, which might prove these rarely used micro-characters to be useful in the reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships in this group of harpacticoids. Both species have their closest relatives in Japan. Phyllopodopsyllus kitazimai is morphologically most similar to P. punctatus Kitazima, 1981, but can be distinguished by much longer third exopodal segments of the third and fourth swimming legs. Phyllopodopsyllus busanensis shares the largest number of morphological similarities with P. setouchiensis Kitazima, 1981, but can be distinguished by shorter caudal rami. A key to species is also provided.

      • Advanced Mobile Terminal for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

        This manuscript introduces a novel design concept for advanced mobile terminals with radio network aggregation capability and enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for various multimedia services in heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks. We establish a new module that provides the best QoS and lowest cost for any given multimedia service (voice, video and audio) by using simultaneously all available wireless and mobile networks for a given traffic flow. The performance of our proposal is evaluated using simulations with multimode mobile stations carrying multimedia traffic in heterogeneous environment with coexistence of multiple Radio Access Technologies, such as 3G, 4G as well as future 5G radio access networks. The analysis of the proposed framework for radio networks aggregation in advanced mobile terminals has shown overall better performances regarding the achievable throughput and multimedia access probability in heterogeneous wireless and mobile environment.

        First records of Hemicyclops tanakai Itoh and Nishida, 2002 and Tisbe ensifer Fischer, 1860 (Crustacea, Copepoda) in Korea

        Extensive survey of invertebrates in Korea, led by the National Institute of Biological Resources in Incheon, continues to uncover many new and endemic species, but also elements of neighbouring faunas that were previously unknown here. Hemicyclops tanakai Itoh and Nishida, 2002 was originally described from estuarine mud-flats in Tokyo Bay, Japan. We report one male and two females from a sandy beach on Jeju Island, which represent its first record in Korea and second record ever. No morphological differences were observed between these two disjunct populations, so we expect more records of this species in Korea and Japan. Tisbe ensifer Fischer, 1860 was originally described from Madeira and later on reported from numerous other parts of the Northern Atlantic, as well as from the Indian Ocean. We report two females from a shallow littoral in Sokcho, which represents its first record in Korea and the first record in the entire Pacific Ocean. Because of morphological discrepancies reported in previous records we recognize that this species might be in reality a species complex, and we only tentatively identify our Korean specimens as T. cf. ensifer. We provide numerous light photographs of both species in addition to short descriptions, in hope that they might elucidate global problems of their zoogeography and dispersal of small marine invertebrates in general. Further samplings from Korea and other parts of the world will be necessary to test our identifications and phylogenetic relationships of Korean populations with molecular and other tools.

        A new species of Afrolaophonte (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Laophontidae) from Korea and cladistic tests of species-groups

        Afrolaophonte koreana sp. nov. is described from the intertidal zone of two sandy beaches on the south coast of Korea. This is the first record of the genus Afrolaophonte Chappuis, 1960 in the Northern Pacific. The new species is most similar to A. aequatorialis Cottarelli and Mura, 1981, described from the Maldives and subsequently also found in Papua New Guinea, but could be distinguished by numerous characters, including the segmentation of the third leg endopod in male, armature formula of the second leg in both sexes, length of caudal rami in both sexes, and length of some setae on the fourth leg in female. Afrolaophonte ensiger Wells and Rao, 1987 from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is established as a junior subjective synonym of A. aequatorialis. To test previous phylogenetic hypotheses based on intuitive methods, a parsimony based cladistic analysis of 13 valid congeners is performed using 15 morphological characters and one outgroup. Only one of three previously proposed species-groups is supported with a synapomorphy, while one was clearly based on symplesiomorphies. Our current knowledge of morphology in this genus is not sufficient for postulating interspecific phylogenies, which also renders previous zoogeographical hypotheses untestable.

        Material Damping Prediction in Timber Beams Based on Timoshenko Free-Free Beam Model

        Damping in vibrating structures is much less understood than their stiffness and inertial properties and in timber structures it is even less understood how damping is generated in motion characteristic of bending and shear separately. We analyse these contributions through application of the so-called method of complex moduli, arising in constant-hysteretic models of damping. We separate the influences on overall damping due to these independent material properties by considering a partial differential equation of undamped motion and substituting Young’s and shear moduli with their complex counterparts. We keep the rotary inertia present in the model to assess its own damping contribution and design an experimental setup in which vibration of a free-free beam is simulated so that no reaction (i.e., no contact damping) should be present, which allows us to assess the contribution due to bending, shear and rotary inertia to material damping only. We show that, in the present model, the overall loss factor is indeed smaller than in the literature, while the damping due to shear effects grows in higher vibration modes and beams with smaller length-to-height ratio. Finally, we propose a damping prediction model built on simple linear regression in which the vibration modes are processed separately.

        The Relationship between Autonomic Regulation of Cardiovascular Function and Body Composition

        Background: We investigated whether the results of autonomic function tests correlate with body composition and shape in healthy young people. Methods: We conducted cardiovascular reflex tests (heart rate [HR] and blood pressure [BP] responses to the Valsalva maneuver and HR response to deep breathing) and the tilt table test with 32 subjects (19 males; mean age, 22.1±1.9 years). Participants also completed an anthropometric measurement sequence (weight; height; upper arm, hips, and waist circumference; triceps and subscapular skinfold), bioelectric impedance testing, and hand grip strength measurements. Results: Markers of obesity, other anthropometric measures, functional measures, and the basal metabolic rate (BMR) were significantly positively correlated with systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) in both the supine and tilted positions. There was a positive correlation between the difference in HR (ΔHR) between the tilt and supine body positions and markers of obesity, the functional marker of dominant handgrip strength, and BMR. Participants with a body mass index (BMI) <25 kg/m2 had significantly lower median values of ΔHR, DBP in the tilt-test, SBP at rest, and SBP in the tilt-test than participants who had a BMI ≥25 kg/m2 (10.55 vs. 21.95 bpm, P=0.003; 77.55 vs. 90.05 mmHg, P=0.045; 113.45 vs. 140.55 mmHg, P=0.013; 117.00 vs. 135.25 mmHg, P=0.006, respectively). Body fat percentage was identified as an independent positive predictor (β=0.993; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.070 to 1.916; P=0.036) and body water percentage was an independent negative predictor of tilted SBP (β=–1.370; 95% CI, –2.634 to 0.106; P=0.035). Conclusion: High sympathetic activity, as evaluated by cardiovascular regulation, correlates with a high share of adipose tissue in young healthy persons.

        A new species of Parastenocaris from Korea, with a redescription of the closely related P. biwae from Japan (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Parastenocarididae)

        Parastenocaris koreana sp. nov. is described based on examination of numerous adult specimens of both sexes from several localities in Korea. Scanning electron micrographs are used to examine intra- and interpopulation variability of micro-characters, in addition to light microscopy. The new species is most closely related to the Japanese P. biwae Miura, 1969, which we redescribe based on newly collected material from the Lake Biwa drainage area. The two species differ in size, relative length of the caudal rami, shape of the anal operculum, shape of the genital double somite, relative length of the inner distal process on the female fifth leg, as well as relative length of the apical setae on the second, third, and fourth legs exopods in both sexes. Detailed examinations of three disjunct populations of P. koreana reveal also some geographical variation, especially in the surface ornamentation of somites, which may indicate some population structuring or even cryptic speciation. Lack of intraspecific variability in the number and position of sensilla on somites, as well as their potential phylogenetic significance, is a novel discovery. Both species examined here belong to the brevipes group, which we redefine to include 20 species from India (including Sri Lanka), Australia, East Asia, Northern Europe, and North America. A key to species of this group is also provided. In order to test the monophyly of the redefined brevipes group with highly disjunct distribution, as well as relationship between different species, a cladistics analysis is performed based on 39 morphological characters and with help of three outgroup taxa. Six equally parsimonious cladograms are generated, all of which show that the ingroup is well defined by at least three synapomorphies. Reconstructed phylogeny questions the previously suggested hypothesis about the origin of this group in South East Asia, with one Australian species showing the most basal position. We speculate that the present distribution of this group may be a combination of ancient vicariance and subsequent dispersal, with a possible origin in the Gondwanaland, in the rift valley between Australia and India.
