        Effect of privatization and inland infrastructural development on India’s container port selection dynamics

        In this study, we present insights on how the privatization of Indian ports is altering the market share of containerized shipments across two key Industrial corridors of India. Using bill of lading dataset, we implement a binary multi-level discrete port choice model that measures the multidimensional attributes that inform the systematic differences in container shipment transport characteristics between the major government ports and private ports in India. The analysis shows that the private port of Mundra has non-trivial effects on the hinterlands of other state-owned ports. This research offers important markers of port selection in developing economies such as India.

        글로벌 도시의 종적 수렴: 자기조직화 지도와 타일 지수의 결합

        본 연구는 2005년부터 2012년까지 글로벌 도시들이 경험한 종적 수렴을 자기조직화 지도와 타일 지수를 활용하여 분석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이 기간은 세계 금융 위기가 있었던 2007년부터 2008년의 기간을 포함하여 주요 경제 및 재정적 스트레스가 세계 대부분 지역에 영향을 미친 중요한 기간이라 할 수 있다. 연구에 사용된 지표는 기존의 세계도시 네트워크 연구들이 보여준 경향을 수용하여 단일 글로벌 도시 지표 대신, 글로벌 도시를 집합적으로 묘사할 수 있는 여러 차원을 동시에 고려하였다. 즉, 경제적 측면에서 세계 500대 회사와 세계 1,000대 은행, 인적교류 측면에서 국제회의, 교통 측면에서 승객 및 화물 항공 교통량을 지표로 사용하였다. 이들 지표를 자기 조직화 지도의 시각적 데이터 마이닝 기법과 타일 지수의 경제적 불평등 측정 방법을 결합하여 다차원 속성 공간의 궤적을 분석하였다. 분석결과, 이 기간에 글로벌 수렴이 확인되었으나, 그 수렴 기여도는 경제 집단과 도시별로 차이가 있었다. 그 차이는 자기 조직화 지도 점수별 5분위 그룹, 1인당 GDP별 5분위 그룹 및 경제 그룹(OECD, BRICs 및 기타)별 타일 지수를 통해 세부적으로 분석되었다. 특히 이 기간에 중국 도시의 큰 수렴 기여도가 주목할 만한 결과로 확인되었다. The purpose of this paper is to study the longitudinal trajectories experienced by global cities over the period centered on the global financial crisis, starting in 2005 and ending in 2012. This period is important because of the major economic and financial stress that has affected most parts of the world. In this paper, instead of using a single global city index, we use multiple dimensions that collectively portray global cities from multiple perspectives consistently with established views on global cities networks. The dimensions retained pertain to corporate headquarter locations, bank locations, passenger and freight air traffic, and international conferencing. Trajectories in the multidimensional attribute space can be analyzed through the visual data mining technique of self-organizing maps (SOM) and the economic inequality measure of the Theil index. Global convergence has confirmed during the study period based on the overall and decomposed Theil index, but a contribution to convergence was different by economic groups and cities. Quintile groups by SOM scores, quintile groups by GDP per capita, and economic groups (OECD, BRICs, and others) are tested through the decomposed Theil index. Chinese cities specifically showed a large contribution to global convergence during the study period.

        Characteristics and Treatments of Large Cystic Brain Metastasis: Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Aspiration

        Brain metastasis represents one of the most common causes of intracranial tumors in adults, and the incidence of brain metastasis continues to rise due to the increasing survival of cancer patients. Yet, the development of cystic brain metastasis remains a relatively rare occurrence. In this review, we describe the characteristics of cystic brain metastasis and evaluate the combined use of stereotactic aspiration and radiosurgery in treating large cystic brain metastasis. The results of several studies show that stereotactic radiosurgery produces comparable local tumor control and survival rates as other surgery protocols. When the size of the tumor interferes with radiosurgery, stereotactic aspiration of the metastasis should be considered to reduce the target volume as well as decreasing the chance of radiation induced necrosis and providing symptomatic relief from mass effect. The combined use of stereotactic aspiration and radiosurgery has strong implications in improving patient outcomes.

        Molecular Analysis of Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya Communities in the Rumen - Review-

        If rumen bacteria can be manipulated to utilize nutrients (i.e., ammonia and plant cell wall carbohydrates) more completely and efficiently, the need for protein supplementation can be reduced or eliminated and the digestion of fiber in forage or agricultural residue-based diets could be enhanced. However, these approaches require a complete and accurate description of the rumen community, as well as methods for the rapid and accurate detection of microbial density, diversity, phylogeny, and gene expression. Molecular ecology techniques based on small subunit (SSU) rRNA sequences, nucleic acid probes and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can potentially provide a complete description of the microbial ecology of the rumen of ruminant animals. The development of these molecular tools will result in greater insights into community structure and activity of gut microbial ecosystems in relation to functional interactions between different bacteria, spatial and temporal relationships between different microorganisms and between microorganisms and reed panicles. Molecular approaches based on SSU rRNA serve to evaluate the presence of specific sequences in the community and provide a link between knowledge obtained from pure cultures and the microbial populations they represent in the rumen. The successful development and application of these methods promises to provide opportunities to link distribution and identity of gastrointestinal microbes in their natural environment with their genetic potential and in situ activities. The use of approaches for assessing pupulation dynamics as well as for assessing community functionality will result in an increased understanding and a complete description of the gastrointestinal communities of production animals fed under different dietary regimes, and lead to new strategies for improving animal growth.
