The Effect of Financial Development, Tariff, and RTA on Exports: A Structural Gravity Analysis

Syed Nazrul Islam,Md. Shariful Islam,Md. Rayhanul Islam,Md. Ashraful Alam 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2024 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.39 No.1

This paper examines the effect of financial development (FD), tariffs, and RTA on bilateral exports in a structural gravity framework. Applying high-dimensional fixed effects in OLS and PPML estimation technique in a panel framework covering 169 countries over 2001-2017, this paper finds that FD of both exporters and importers are an important determinant for boosting exports. The EIA has the most trade creation effect than any other form of RTA. Importers' FD has a larger effect on bilateral exports for developed to developed and developed and developing country trade than that of the exporters. The trade between developing to developing countries is positively affected by both exporters' and importers' FD; and negatively to a larger extent by tariff measures. However, in the case of developing and developed country estimation, FD of the exporter country is significantly affecting bilateral trade. Tariffs significantly distort trade, largely between developing and developed countries.

A review of fixed offshore platforms under earthquake forces

Syed Danish Hasan,Nazrul Islam,Khalid Moin 국제구조공학회 2010 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.35 No.4

Advances in geological studies, have identified increased seismic activity in the world's ocean once believed to be far from seismic hazards. The increase in demand of oil and other hydrocarbons leaves no option but to install a suitable offshore platform on these seismically sensitive offshore basins. Therefore, earthquake based design criteria for offshore structures are essential. The focus of the present review is on various computational techniques involved for seismic response study. The structural and load modeling approaches, the disturbed fluid-structure and soil-structure interaction as well as hydrodynamic damping due to earthquake excitation are also discussed. A brief description on the reliability-based seismic design approach is also presented.

      • Aerodynamic behaviour of double hinged articulated loading platforms

        Zaheer, Mohd Moonis,Hasan, Syed Danish,Islam, Nazrul,Aslam, Moazzam Techno-Press 2021 Ocean systems engineering Vol.11 No.1

Articulated loading platforms (ALPs) belongs to a class of offshore structures known as compliant. ALP motions have time periods falling in the wind excitation frequency range due to their compliant behaviour. This paper deals with the dynamic behavior of a double hinged ALP subjected to low-frequency wind forces with random waves. Nonlinear effects due to variable submergence, fluctuating buoyancy, variable added mass, and hydrodynamic forces are considered in the analysis. The random sea state is characterized by the Pierson-Moskowitz (P-M) spectrum. The wave forces on the submerged elements of the platform's shaft are calculated using Morison's Equation with Airy's linear wave theory ignoring diffraction effects. The fluctuating wind load has been estimated using Ochi and Shin wind velocity spectrum for offshore structures. The nonlinear dynamic equation of motion is solved in the time domain by the Wilson-θ method. The wind-structure interactions, along with the effect of various other parameters on the platform response, are investigated. The effect of offset of aerodynamic center (A.C.) with the center of gravity (C.G.) of platform superstructure has also been investigated. The outcome of the analyses indicates that low-frequency wind forces affect the response of ALP to a large extent, which otherwise is not enhanced in the presence of only waves. The mean wind modifies the mean position of the platform surge response to the positive side, causing an offset. Various power spectral densities (PSDs) under high and moderate sea states show that apart from the significant peak occurring at the two natural frequencies, other prominent peaks also appear at very low frequencies showing the influence of wind on the response.

Relationship Between Vitamin D Status and Brain Perfusion in Neuropsychiatric Lupus

        Nasreen Sultana,Azmal Kabir Sarkar,Hiroshi Matsuda,Amimul Ihsan,Syed Atiqul Haq,Saidul Arefin,Sheikh Nazrul Islam 대한핵의학회 2022 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.56 No.3

Purpose Neuropsychiatric manifestation of lupus (NPSLE) is related with vitamin D (vit-D) deficiency which is possibly amenable to supplementation. This study was done to explore link of serum vit-D level and clinical mini-mental state examination (MMSE) with brain perfusion SPECT (BS) in patients with NPSLE. Methods Patients who underwent BS with the diagnosis of NPSLE and had serum levels of vit-D andMMSE within a span of 1 month were retrospectively included. The BS DICOM data were used to generate 3D surface images of brain for visual identification of regional hypoperfusion, and the z-scores from eZIS software and then to performvoxel-based regression analysis in order to explore association between serum vit-D level and cerebral perfusion deficit using SPM8. Distribution of serum vit-D level was checked across MMSE and BS z-score using R. Results A total 19 patients with means ± SD age of 28.4 ± 9.2 years, having mean levels of serum vit-D of 18.7 ± 9.8 ng/ml and meanMMSE scores 24.2 ± 1.6, had undergone BS. The eZIS-derived z-score fall in the category of normal in six (31.6%), mild perfusion deficit (PD) in 10 (52.6%) and moderate PD in three (15.8%) with the means ± SD of z-score being 0.52 ± 0.2, 1.72 ± 0.2, and 2.33 ± 0.2. Voxel-based analysis revealed significant positive correlation between vit-D level and hypoperfusion in brain regions related to cognitive function (p<0.05). Serum vit-D levels were significantly lower in NPSLE patients with lowerMMSE scores as well as in higher eZIS z-score (p < 0.01). Conclusions Our results may support the utility of vit-D supplementation in NPSLE and applicability of BS as a clinical adjunct for monitoring response to vit-D supplementation.
