This paper deals with finite element analysis of small motors using permanent field magnets. To improve the computational accuracy, adaptive finite element algorithm is applied and that estimates the normal directional magnetic field densities at the interfaces of neighboring meshes. Results show the flux distribution to be smoothen and the calculated torque to be improved.

Time-specific responses of flower bud differentiation were investigated in ‘Shinko’ (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) pear grown at different altitudes from July through December 2013 to determine their suitability as scions in a top-grafting system. Flower bud initiation and bud necrosis were monitored on each of three sections of one-year-old shoots: terminal, middle, and basal. Flower bud differentiation s tarted in September in the highlands of the Lishan area, and in J uly in the lowlands of the Zhoulan area. In Lishan, flower bud differentiation was higher in the middle and basal segments; during leaf fall, however, flower bud differentiation occurred rapidly in the terminal segment. In Zhoulan, flower buds began to differentiate from the terminal section of the shoot, and severe flower bud necrosis was noted. In July, flower buds developed normally; however, in early August, some of the buds at the basal segment showed browning. During leaf fall, some flower buds showed symptoms of necrosis with rapid and complete browning. Flower bud necrosis began at the basal segment and progressed rapidly towards middle and terminal sections. Before leaf fall, flower buds fell off when scales swelled. The terminal and middle parts of the current-year shoots, with some flower buds, collected in October or later from the Lishan area could be used as scions for top-grafting of ‘Shinko’ pear. Each grafting scion was a 3-5 cm shoot with one flower bud. These results suggest that scions from the terminal and middle segments of stems of ‘Shinko’ pear from the Lishan area can be used as scions whereas those from Zhoulan area show necrosis and might not be suitable as scions.

Extramammary paget disease (EMPD) is a heterogenous condition representing either an in situ malignancy with apocrine differentiation or pagetoid spread of an underlying adnexal tumor or a non-cutaneous internal neoplasm. Concurrent involvement of the same area by EMPD and benign adnexal neoplasm is extremely rare. We describe a case of EMPD of the vulva with a benign underlying syringoma. A 69-year-old woman presented with a pruritic erythematous lesion on the left side of the vulva, which had been present for 3 years. Histopathological examination of biopsy specimen from the lesion revealed the presence of large pale cells with prominent nuclei, which were randomly dispersed throughout the epidermis. The dermis showed dilated cystic spaces lined by two layers of cuboidal cells and epithelial strands of similar cells with no evidence of atypia, and with no demonstrable continuity with epidermis. Some of the cysts had small comma-like tails, which gave them the appearance of tadpoles. A diagnosis of combined vulvar Paget’s disease and syringoma was rendered. This case is the first reported example of EMPD with a benign underlying syringoma, which is highly suspected to be coincidental association.

<P>Oxidative stress plays various roles in the development and progression of IgA nephropathy, while bilirubin is known as a potent antioxidant. We therefore hypothesized that serum bilirubin would be associated with renal prognosis in IgA nephropathy. The study subjects comprised 1,458 adult patients with primary IgA nephropathy in Korea. We grouped patients according to the following quartile levels of bilirubin: <0.4 mg/dL (Q1), 0.4-0.5 mg/dL (Q2), 0.6-0.7 mg/dL (Q3), and >0.8 mg/dL (Q4). The outcome data were obtained from the Korean Registry of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Eighty patients (5.5%) contracted ESRD during a mean follow-up period of 44.9 months. The ESRD incidences were 10.7% in Q1, 8.2% in Q2, 2.8% in Q3, and 2.8% in Q4 (<I>p</I><0.001). The relative risk of ESRD compared to that in Q1 was 0.307 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.126-0.751) in Q3 and 0.315 (95% CI, 0.130-0.765) in Q4. The differences of ESRD incidence were greater in subgroups of males and of patients aged 35 yr or more, with serum albumin 4.0 g/dL or more, with normotension, with eGFR 60 mL/min/1.73 m<SUP>2</SUP> or more, and with proteinuria less then 3+ by dipstick test. In conclusion, higher bilirubin level was negatively associated with ESRD incidence in IgA nephropathy.</P>

We investigated the effects of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS), an amino-group reagent, on the human ether-a-go-go-related gene (HERG) K+ channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes. TNBS neutralizes the positively charged amino-groups of peptide N-terminal and lysine residues. External application of TNBS at 10 mM for 5 min irreversibly shifted the curves for currents at the end of the pulse and tail currents of HERG to a more negative potential and decreased the maximal amplitude of the Itail curve (Itail,max). TNBS had little effect on either the activated current-voltage relationship or the reversal potential of HERG current, indicating that TNBS did not change ion selectivity properties. TNBS shifted the time constant curves of both activation and deactivation of the HERG current to a more hyperpolarized potential; TNBS’s effect was greater on channel opening than channel closing. External H+ is known to inhibit HERG current by shifting V1/2 to the right and decreasing Itail,max. TNBS enhanced the blockade of external H+ by exaggerating the effect of H+ on Itail,max, not on V1/2. Our data provide evidence for the presence of essential amino-groups that are associated with the normal functioning of the HERG channel and evidence that these groups modify the blocking effect of external H+ on the current.

The physiochemical properties and interactions between porcine blood and waxy rice were determined. Addition of calcium chloride (0.15%) improved acceptability of blood cake and increased the gelatinization degree of waxy rice. The water-holding capacity of porcine blood gel (blood/water=60/40, v/v), extent of absorption and gelatinization of waxy rice, and scanning electron microscopy showed that blood protein matrix and waxy rice are competitors for holding water in the cooking procedure. Non-haem iron content increased linearly (R=0.95) when heating temperature rose. The presence of blood proteins caused increasing of peak temperature (Tp) of gelatinization in differential scanning calorimetric thermal gram, The microstnlcture of plasma proteins and haemoglobin appeared continuous changes, and interacted with surface of waxy rice flour in terms of network and mosaic form, respectively. The electrophoretic patterns revealed an interaction between plasma proteins and waxy rice glutelin and haemoglobin when heated could be found at temperatures above $60^{\circ}C$.
