        Effect of Plasma Power on Corrosion Behaviour of Plasma Sprayed Hydroxyapatite Coatings

        Hydroxyapatite coating have been deposited on titanium alloys (Ti–6Al–4V) substrate by varying plasma power from 20to 35 kW using atmospheric plasma spraying. Effect of plasma power variation on the microstructure as well as corrosionbehaviour of the coatings has studied exhaustibly in simulated body fluid (SBF). Microstructural analysis revealed thatincreasing the plasma power from 20 to 35 kW has led to a more densified coating by minimizing the level of porosity andpartially melted region as well. This enhanced property is attributed to the higher velocity of the in-flight particles withtheir shorter residence time at 35 kW. The molten particles strike the substrate without losing much of its energy during itsflight, which further boosted the closed packing of the coating layers ensuing a reduced inter-splat region. These improvedmicrostructural properties also escorted to enhancement in corrosion resistance with increase in the plasma power. Thisenhancement in corrosion behaviour at higher power is attributed to reduction in pores and voids in the coatings whichhindered the penetration of SBF solution into the coatings.

        Insight into emerging applications of forward osmosis systems

        The advent of Forward Osmosis (FO) has ushered in a new revolution in thefield of membranetechnology. Besides the oft-studied application of water purification, FO has opened up new frontiers ofresearch in diversefields. All of them are potentially sustainable technology solutions characterized by ahigh degree of process intensification. It is interesting to imagine different avenues where the potentcombination of membrane technology and osmotic gradient can be used. This brief review evaluates foursuch emerging applications of FO; viz: Membrane Crystallization, Osmotic Pumps, Energy Production,and Membrane Evaporation which will be considered as the most important in the near future. All fouraforesaid applications were critically reviewed with respect to the principle of operation, process designfundamentals, cost distribution, tangible benefits over conventional alternatives and commercialventures around the world. Comparative assessments of transportflux, yield, configuration, andmembrane module was carried out. Several issues relating to performance, hydrodynamics and scale updesigns were analyzed with special emphasis on concentration polarization,flux decline, nature of themembrane.

        Spontaneous Rectal Perforation with Transanal Evisceration of the Small Bowel: A Rare Case Report

        Transanal evisceration of the small bowel is a rare surgical emergency. Rectal perforation in such cases is usually due to an underlying rectal prolapse. We report a case of a middle aged (45 years) male with spontaneous rectal perforation and transanal evisceration of the small bowel. Approximately 150 cm of small bowel had eviscerated transanally and the patient required emergent abdominal exploration, reposition of the small bowel, and repair of the rectal perforation. Small bowel evisceration through the anal verge is an emergent condition and the aim was to prevent life threatening complications related to sepsis.
