        NaHCO3/Na2CO3 as an inhibitor of chloride-induced mild steel corrosion in cooling water: Electrochemical evaluation

        This study systematically investigated the inhibition mechanism of NaHCO3 for mild steel corrosion in a0.02 M naturally aerated NaCl solution at 40 C (simulating cooling water) and the critical bicarbonate/chloride molar ratio (RC) using visual observations, potentiodynamic polarization curves, andelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The corrosion mechanism of an anodic passivefilm formedwith 0.20–0.40 M NaHCO3 (RC = 10) was controlled by a combination of passivation, diffusion, and chargetransfer processes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that, compared to 0.20–0.24 M NaHCO3, a higher NaHCO3 concentration may affect the stability of the passivefilm. A higherchloride concentration of 0.08 M achieved by a higher concentration cycle in the cooling water systemresulted in a lower RC value of 7.5 for NaHCO3. Both NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 showed an identical corrosionmechanism; moreover, the inhibitory effect of Na2CO3 was not dependent on its alkaline pH. Takentogether, thesefindings show the remarkable potential of NaHCO3/Na2CO3 as a commercially available,comparatively cheap, and environmentally acceptable (i.e., no organic pollution, toxicity, oreutrophication risks after discharge) corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in cooling water systems.

        DEVELOPMENT OF INVERTER AND POWER CAPACITORS FOR MILD HYBRID VEHICLE (MHV) - TOYOTA "CROWN"

        The 42V Mild Hybrid System has been released into market by Toyota for the first time in the world in 2001. The set-up employs an inverter unit to control the motor/generator (MG) electronically. The driving system called such as Toyota Mild Hybrid System (TMHS) has additional new functions to conventional internal combustion engines. When stopping vehicle, the engine stops promptly. When starting vehicle, by releasing the brake pedal MG starts the vehicle at the same time (EV-driving mode). When stepping on the accelerator pedal, or after a given period of time the engine firing occurs and the engine-driving mode starts. When running by motor, the power is supplied to the motor from 36V battery through the inverter. High outputs and instant responses are required for Inverter. At the same time, the compact volume is required to fit into the limited space of the engine room. The compact size and high output are also required to Power Capacitor used for this inverter. The power capacitors has been newly developed, shaped in "flat" type, suitably for the inverter. The points of developments on inverter and power capacitor are described in this paper.his paper.

      • Evaluation of Steering Model depending on Gazing Distance by using Driving Simulator

        To analyze the driving behavior is important for design a comfortable automatic driving. So far, conventional PID models was widely used to steer the vehicle. It had been assumed that the driver looks at the constant point in conventional PID model. However, all drivers have experiences that the gazing distance changes according to the situations. The PID gain of the steering model are modified depending on driver’s gazing distance. The facts are familiar, but the relationship between driver’s steering gain and the gazing distance has not been clarified yet. If this relation becomes clear, it can be helpful for the comfortable driving assistance and/or automatic driving systems to provide for each driver. In this paper, how to model the steering behavior is discussed and steering model depending on gazing distance is proposed. The features of the model are real-time measurement of gazing distance, and incorporating the gazing distance explicitly into a model. The effectiveness of the model is evaluated using a Honda driving simulator assuming an actual driving environment.

      • Destination Attributes Classification and Tourist Overall Satisfaction

        The purpose of the current paper is to study the perception of first-time and repeat travelers toward the importance and performance of Penang Island tourism attributes. A total of 12 attributes was developed to evaluate the traveler's satisfaction level towards Penang as a tourist destination. Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) grid depicted the perception of fist-time and repeat travelers towards the level of importance and performance of Penang attributes. The first-time and repeat travelers showed different perception regarding to some of the factors. However, they were agreed in many aspects such as the most important attributes with high level of performance. The implication and recommendation for Penang marketers were discussed.

        Overexpression of the Activated Disease Resistance 1-like1 (ADR1-L1) Gene Results in a Dwarf Phenotype and Activation of Defense-Related Gene Expression in Arabidopsis thaliana

        The protein encoded by the activated disease resistance 1-like1 (ADR1-L1) gene (locus name, At4g33300)belongs to the activated disease resistance 1 (ADR1) family of coiled-coil nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat-type disease resistance proteins. This family contains four proteins and they have specific features in their amino acid sequences. It has been reported that ADR1 protein belongs to the ADR1family, which is related to not only defense response but also drought tolerance. We found that transgenic plants overexpressing the ADR1-L1 gene showed a dwarf phenotype and morphological change in leaves. The expression levels of defense-related genes and the resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 were increased in transgenic plants. However, enhancement of drought tolerance and activation of abiotic response genes were not observed. When the growth temperature was changed from 22°C to 28°C, the expression of defense-related genes and the enhancement of resistance to a bacterial pathogen were suppressed and the dwarf phenotype and morphological change of leaves recovered.

        Successful additional clarithromycin and tacrolimus treatment for hypereosinophilia associated with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis

        A 41-year-old man suffering from eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EPGA), diagnosedat another clinic on the basis of American College of Rheumatology Criteria, with a historyof bronchial asthma, eosinophilia, mononeuritis multiplex, and non-fixed pulmonary infiltrates,was admitted to our department for further treatment. The patient complained of chest pain thatstarted recently. An echocardiogram identified myocardial thickening and decreased wall motion,based on which the patient was diagnosed as having EPGA with myocarditis. The patient was successfullytreated using glucocorticoids, such as methyl prednisolone (PSL) and PSL in combinationwith cyclophosphamide (CPM). However, CPM administration was discontinued afterwardsbecause of the risk of bone marrow toxicity, the increased eosinophilic count (EOC) that we consideredas an index of disease activity. Subsequently, the patient received additional clarithromycin(CAM) and tacrolimus (TAC) treatment considering their immunomodulatory effects. As a result,the EOC decreased and the PSL dosage could be reduced. This case shows that additional CAM andTAC treatment may be beneficial in some cases of EPGA.

        Design of a Method for Disassembly Works on Recycle Products

        This study proposes a new framework for designing disassembly methods. In recent years, environmental problems have become global issues. Recycling of used products or resources is recognized as a matter of significance since it may help reduce the risk of exhausting natural resources. Considering possible exhaustion of limited natural resources in the near future, reuse of products would gain more environmental significance. As yet, it relies hugely on manual disassembly, which labor cost places burden on the total recycling cost. The purpose of this study is to propose a methodology designing for manual disassembly works, and a creation method of a jig. By focusing on parts' connection and attachment relationship, parts are categorized in 5 categories (parent part, joint key part, attaching key part, child part, and independent part) according to the features that parts possess, and 3 kinds of connection relationships (parent part-joint key part connection, parent part-independent part connection and child part-child part connection) are clarified. Connection relationship and attachment relationship charts have also been created, and utilizing them, disassembly orders are settled, and a disassembly jig is devised. The proposed methodology is also applied to a real product and its work time is improved 42% form 31 to 13 seconds.

      • Spatial Price Dynamics in the U.S. Vegetables Sector

        This article investigates price transmission in the U.S. fresh vegetable market, considering the top five vegetables consumed: carrots, lettuce, onions, potatoes, and tomatoes. An asymmetric variable-threshold autoregressive model (AvTAR) was used to estimate price relationships between 54 terminal market pairs, while the parity bounds model (PBM) was used to estimate the probability of 28 shipping point to terminal market pairs behaving efficiently. Results for the AvTAR model provide evidence that the level of perishability positively impacts the level of market integration and of increasing transaction costs among nearly 70% of the markets studied. Results for the PBM indicate that 18% of the markets studied had more than a 10% probability of behaving inefficiently, indicating that while the majority of markets behaved efficiently, there is room for improvement. The estimated thresholds have been suggested as an estimated of transport cost, but estimated thresholds often differ substantially from actual transport costs.
