        An Historical Examination of the Film Theories and Avant-Garde Mediation of Slavko Vorkapich in Hollywood

        초창기 영화이론가인 슬라브코 보카피치(Slavko Vorkapich)는 유능한 유럽 이민자 출신자로 미국 초기 아방가르드 감독들 중의 한명이다. 그는 독특하고 변별적인 노력으로 그만의 영화개념을 만들어가고 있었다. 본 연구는 슬라브코 보카피치의 방대한 저작물을 역사적으로 살펴볼 것이다. 구체적으로 그의 이론을 역사적으로 정리한 슬라브코 보카피치 콜렉션과 몽타주 테크닉 등을 살펴보고, 그의 저작물에서 제시된 영화철학과 영상미학이 어떻게 구현되고 있는가를 밝힐 예정이다. 여기서 살펴볼 그의 저작물은 1926년에 발표된『시각언어로서 영화(FilmAs A Visual Language)』, 『예술로서의 영화(TheMotion Picture as an Art)』, 『움직임과 촬영예술(Motion and the Art of Cinematography)』등 인데 이들은 그의 아방가르드 영화인 <9413이라는 한 할리우드 엑스트라의 삶과 죽음(The Life and Death of 9413 - A Hollywood Extra)>(1928)에 반영되었다. 한편 몽타주 시퀀스는 광범위하게 할리우드 영화에 나타났는데 대표적으로 조지 쿠커(George Cukor)의 영화 <할리우드가 무슨 소용이야(What Price Hollywood?)>(1932)가 있다. 슬라브코 보카피치의 다양한 저작물은 스튜디오나 독립제작에 그의 미학적 철학을 역동적으로 재현하는데 일조하고 있다. 상업적인 영역과 아방가르드의 관계를 통해서, 그는 개념적으로 경제적이고 예술적인 심연을 성공적으로 연결했다는 점이 놀랍게 다가온다. 더욱이 상업영화인 <할리우드가 무슨 소용이야>의 몽타주 시퀀스의 분석은 이러한 연결의 구체적인 사례일 것이다. 이 영화의 예는 보카피치의 아방가르드적 스타일이 어떻게 고전적 할리우드 스튜디오 시스템 환경에서 적용될 수 있었는지를 알게 해 준다. Early film theorist Slavko Vorkapich, a talented European emigre who became one of the first avant-garde filmmakers in the United States, articulated his conception of cinema as a unique, distinctive artistic endeavor. I will historically examine extensive original primary archival materials from the Slavko Vorkapich Collection to historically contextualize his film theories, montage techniques, and investigate how he envisioned his cinematic philosophy and visual aesthetic in his theoretical writings on motion pictures regarding “Film As A Visual Language,” “The Motion Picture as an Art” and “Motion and the Art of Cinematography” in 1926 which he went on to stylistically employ in his independent avant-garde films, such as The Life and Death of 9413 ? A Hollywood Extra (Slavko Vorkapich and Robert Florey [with Gregg Toland]; US, 1928), and in montage sequences for an extensive number of Hollywood studio films, including What Price Hollywood? (George Cukor, RKO Pathe; US, 1932). Vorkapich’s diverse array of work embodies the dynamic representation of his aesthetic philosophy encompassed in both his studio and independent productions. Notable is that he manages to successfully bridge the conceptual economic and artistic abyss between the dominant commercial industry and the avant-garde. Moreover, an analysis of montage sequences in the commercial film What Price Hollywood? reveals how his avant-garde stylistic mediation functions to transform the overall narrative film text by appropriating his innovative experimental aesthetic techniques expounded on in his film theories within the mainstream commercial production environment of the classical Hollywood studio system.

      • Background subtraction using Gaussian-Bernoulli restricted Boltzmann machine

        <P>The background subtraction is an important technique in computer vision which segments moving objects into video sequences by comparing each new frame with a learned background model. In this work, the authors propose a novel background subtraction method based on Gaussian-Bernoulli restricted Boltzmann machines (GRBMs). The GRBM is different from the ordinary restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) by using real numbers as inputs, resulting in a constrained mixture of Gaussians, which is one of the most widely used techniques to solve the background subtraction problem. The GRBM makes it easy to learn the variance of pixel values and takes the advantage of the generative model paradigm of the RBM. They present a simple technique to reconstruct the learned background model from a given input frame and to extract the foreground from the background using the variance learned for each pixel. Furthermore, they demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique with extensive experimentation and quantitative evaluation on several commonly used public data sets for background subtraction.</P>

        Emerging role of nanosuspensions in drug delivery systems

        Rapid advancement in drug discovery process is leading to a number of potential new drug candidates having excellent drug efficacy but limited aqueous solubility. By virtue of the submicron particle size and distinct physicochemical properties, nanosuspension has the potential ability to tackle many formulation and drug delivery issues typically associated with poorly water and lipid soluble drugs. Conventional size reduction equipment such as media mill and high-pressure homogenizers and formulation approaches such as precipitation, emulsion-solvent evaporation, solvent diffusion and microemulsion techniques can be successfully implemented to prepare and scale-up nanosuspensions. Maintaining the stability in solution as well as in solid state, resuspendability without aggregation are the key factors to be considered for the successful production and scale-up of nanosuspensions. Due to the considerable enhancement of bioavailability, adaptability for surface modification and mucoadhesion for drug targeting have significantly expanded the scope of this novel formulation strategy. The application of nanosuspensions in different drug delivery systems such as oral, ocular, brain, topical, buccal, nasal and transdermal routes are currently undergoing extensive research. Oral drug delivery of nanosuspension with receptor mediated endocytosis has the promising ability to resolve most permeability limited absorption and hepatic first-pass metabolism related issues adversely affecting bioavailability. Advancement of enabling technologies such as nanosuspension can solve many formulation challenges currently faced among protein and peptide-based pharmaceuticals.

        Neuromorphic Character Recognition System With Two PCMO Memristors as a Synapse

        <P>Using memristor devices as synaptic connections has been suggested with different neural architectures in the literature. Most of the published works focus on simulating some plasticity mechanism for changing memristor conductance. This paper presents a neural architecture of a character recognition neural system using Al/Pr<SUB>0.7</SUB>Ca<SUB>0.3</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB> (PCMO) memristors. The PCMO memristor has an inhomogeneous barrier at the aluminum and PCMO interface which gives rise to an asymmetrical behavior when moving from high resistance to low resistance and vice versa. This paper details the design and simulations for solving this asymmetrical memristor behavior. Also, a general memory read/write framework is used to describe the running and plasticity of neural systems. The proposed neural system can be produced in hardware using a small 1 K crossbar memristor grid and CMOS neural nodes as presented in the simulation results.</P>

        HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER EFFECTS ON MHD NATURAL CONVECTION FLOW PAST AN INFINITE INCLINED PLATE WITH RAMPED TEMPERATURE

        This work is devoted to investigate heat and mass transfer effects on MHD natural convection flow past an inclined plate with ramped temperature numerically. The dimensionless governing equations for this investigation are solved by using finite element method. The effects of angle inclination, buoyancy ratio parameter, permeability parameter, magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, heat generation, thermal radiation, Eckert number, Schmidt number, chemical reaction parameter and time on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are studied and presented with the aid of figures. The effects of the pertinent parameters on skin friction, rate of heat transfer and mass transfer coefficients are presented in tabular form. The numerical results are compared graphically with previously published result as special case of the present investigation and results found to be in good agreement.

        Regression Studies of Dry Weight of Planktonic Biomass on Physico-chemical Parameters of Ponds with Special Reference to Fertilization

        The regression equations of dry weight of planktonic biomass upon physico-chemical characteristics of fifteen ponds in three replicates under the influence of artificial feed, broiler manure, buffalo manure, N:P:K (25:25:0) and a control pond was obtained after one year of experimental period by using stepwise regression method. Water samples from each of the ponds were analyzed daily. However, the average values were calculated on the basis of 15 day intervals designated as fortnight. In artificial feed supplemented pond the regression of average nitrates on dry weight of planktonic biomass accounted for 71.7% of the variation in biomass. In broiler manure fertilization pond the regression of total nitrogen on dry weight of planktonic biomass held it responsible for more than 74.6% of variation in biomass. In buffalo's manure fertilized pond more than 82% of the variations in biomass were due to total nitrogen. In case of N:P:K (25:25:0) treated pond 66% of the variation in the dry weight of planktonic biomass was due to average nitrates. The control pond showed the dependence of biomass on light penetration. This equation explained more than 62 percent of variation in biomass. Other variables also showed some contribution towards variation in biomass under all the treatments in these regression studies.

        Biomass Conversion Efficiencies of Fish Pond Fertilization and Feed Supplementation

        Biomass conversion efficiencies (B.C.E) of six fish species viz, Catla catla, Labeo, rohita, Cirrhina mrigala, Hypophthalmicthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio cultured under artificial feed (T1), broiler manure (T2), buffalo manure (T3), N:P:K (25:25:0) (T4) and control pond (T5) have been determined for the period of one year. The overall biomass conversion efficiencies under the influence of T2, T3, and T4 were statistically similar. However, the best (0.40) efficiency was determined under feed supplement-ation (T1).

        Relationships among Gonad Weight, Liver Weight and Body Weight of Major, Common and Some Chinese Carps under Composite Culture System with Special Reference to Pond Fertilization

        The relationship of gonad weight and liver weight with body weight of six fish species viz; Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhina mrigala, Hypophthlamichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio under the influence of artificial feed, broiler manure, buffalo manure, N:P:K (25:25:0) and a control pond were examined after a rearing period of one year. The positive relationship between gonad weight and body weight was significant which showed the dependence of gonadal development on body weight in all the six fish species. The currelation coefficients were higher in female fishes. However, the major carps had a much smaller proportional gonadal weight as compared with Chinese carps and a common carp due to their faster growth rate. The overall comparison of six fish species under different experimental treatments revealed that highest liver weight was observed for C. idella closely followed by C. carpio. The maximum correlation value was observed with H. molitrix under the broiler manure. The maximum Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) remained as 32.63 for C. carpio followed by C. idella. The maximum value for Hepatosomatic Index (HSI). remained 1.99 for C. idella followed by C. mrigala.

        Proximate Composition of Viscera of Major, Common and Some Chinese Carps Under the Effect of Different Fertilization Schemes and Feed Supplementation in Composite Culture System

        The proximate composition of viscera of six fish species viz., Catla catla, Labeo, rohita Cirrhina mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio under the influence of artificial feed $(T_1)$, broiler manure $(T_2)$, buffalo manure $(T_3)$, N:P:K (25:25:0 $T_4$) and control pond $(T_5)$ has been studied on final harvest after the end of experimental period of one year. The overall comparison of six fish species under five different treatments showed that Cyprinus carpio remained the best for visceral total protein contents. The maximum visceral protein content was recorded in fishes under $T_2$ except Cirrhina mrigala, while the minimum under $T_5$. The comparison of five treatments showed that maximum (6.69) percentage of fat in viscera of fish was recorded under $T_2$, closely followed by $T_4$ while minimum (4.89) under the effect of $T_5$. Among the six fish species under five treatments Cyprinus carpio showed maximum accumulation/deposition of total fats in viscera.
