        Color Fastness and Tensile Properties of Cotton Fabric Dyed with Extract from Albizia Procera Sawdust

        Natural dye was extracted from Albizia procera sawdust by an aqueous extraction process. The extracted dye wasapplied to cotton fabric, and the dyeing techniques were evaluated. The metallic mordants FeSO4 and CuSO4 were used asdye fixing agents in this dyeing process. Different parameters, such as dye concentration, dyeing temperature, dyeing time,type of mordant, mordant concentration, and dyeing method, were evaluated. It was observed that the dye exhaustion oncotton fabric significantly increased with FeSO4 mordant over that with CuSO4. The shades of the dyed fabric were found tobe dark olive when the FeSO4 mordant was used and brown when the CuSO4 mordant was used. Pre-, meta-, and postmordantingdyeing methods were used to dye the fabric, but the meta-mordanting method was the most suitable for dyeingfabric with sawdust extract. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was performed on the extracted dyes and thedyed cotton fabric. The color fastness and tensile properties of all the dyed fabrics were evaluated and compared. The fabrictreated with FeSO4 as a mordant showed better color fastness and color strength (K/S) than the fabric treated with CuSO4mordant. However, the fabric treated with CuSO4 showed better tensile properties than the FeSO4 treated fabric and theundyed fabric.

        Polyphenolic Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Underutilized Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) Pomace Extracts

        Grape pomace is an abundant source of underutilized winery by-products. Polyphenols were extracted from grape pomace using cellulase and gluco-amylase enzymes. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Folin-Ciocalteu's assays were used to measure antioxidant activity and total polyphenolic contents. Both cellulase, and gluco-amylase digested grape pomace showed efficient radical scavenging activity. In addition, the total polyphenolic contents of cellulase digested grape pomace showed lower concentrations were effective compared to higher concentrations, whereas glucoamylase enzyme did not show remarkable variations. The DPPH radical scavenging activity and total polyphenolic contents were significantly higher in the cellulase digested grape pomace compared to the gluco-amylase digested and the not digested grape pomace. It is notable that enzymatic digestions were efficient for extracting polyphenols from grape pomace. The underutilized grape pomace polyphenols can be further used for food safety as a natural antioxidant.

        Antioxidant activity of Moringa oleifera seed extracts

        The present research evaluates the phytochemical and antioxidant activity of Moringa oleifera Lam. seed kernel grown in Bangladesh. M. oleifera seed kernel was extracted with methanol, acetone and water individually. The phytochemical content was evaluated through the determination of total phenolic, total flavonoid and total tannin contents. In vitro antioxidant capacity was determined following four complementary methods: DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, ABTS{2,2′-azinobis- (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)}, and NO (nitric oxide) free radical scavenging and reducing power tests. The total phenolic contents 60.99 ± 0.153, 30.78 ± 0.101 and 90.97 ± 0.134 mg gallic acid eq./g dry extract, total flavonoids contents 10.13 ± 0.171, 13.32 ± 0.101 and 221.76 ± 0.221 mg quercetin eq./g and total tannins contents 97.10 ± 0.153, 73.91 ± 0.107 and 21.74 ± 0.086 mg tannic acid eq./g dry extract were found to be present in methanol, acetone and water extracts respectively. Among the three extracts, the water extract exhibited significant activities for scavenging DPPH, ABTS and NO free radicals with EC50 values 36.89 ± 0.154, 13.20 ± 0.049 and 217.95 ± 0.327 μg/mL respectively against the standard antioxidant compound ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxy anisole. The results of this research revealed that among the three extracts of M. oleifera seed kernel the water extract exhibited significant free radical scavenging activity. Reducing power, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were also observed to be significant for the water extract. So in contrast of all the results of this study it can be concluded that among the three extracts (methanol, acetone and water) the water extract possessed potent antioxidant activity which support the use of M. oleifera seed kernel as natural antioxidant.
