This study provides an estimation result of amount of recoverable mercury using UNEP Toolkit, and a experimental result of thermal mercury reduction for inventing a mercury recovery technology from the sludge which contains high concentration of mercury. By using UNEP methodology, the source category of primary metal production was found to be the maximum mercury discharge source in UNEP Toolkit mercury categories. According to those results, thermal treatment experiment was conducted using mercury containing waste in primary metal category. Wastewater sludge from a primary metal facility was used as a sample for thermal degradation experiment. In order to recover purified elemental mercury, the further researches of distillation and refining technology would be required.

This study provides a result of mercury recovery characteristics for waste using thermal technology. Mercury waste was categorized as three types such as waste consisting, waste containing, waste contaminated of mercury or mercury compounds. Those mercury wastes should be properly collected separately and recovered mercury or stabilized for environmentally sound management. Thermal treatment was conducted to recover elemental mercury from mercury containing products (barometer and UV lamp) and Hg contaminated soil. 150 L volume stainless steel drum was introduced inside of the pilot-scale furnace for thermal treatment. An agitator was kept operating during thermal treatment if mixing is needed. Experiments were carried out in temperature range between 400-700℃ with reduced pressure condition up to 1,013.25 Pa. Off-gas generated form thermal furnace was passed through a ceramic filter unit. That is used to filter out impurities in flue gas with higher temperature than boiling point of mercury in case of necessary cleaning selectively. 100 kg of waste per batch could be treated and elemental mercury was recovered with a condensation unit by maintain the temperature around 10℃ during thermal treatment. Activated carbon trap was applied to control mercury in emitting gas. Also mass balance was made to observe mercury distribution in pilot scale process. Treated waste could be disposed as general waste and recovered mercury could be recycled and reused as a resource.
Mercury distribution characteristics in primary manganese smelting plants

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The mercury (Hg) distribution characteristics were investigated in three primary manganese smelting plants in Korea for the assessment of anthropogenic Hg released. Input and output materials were sampled from each process, and Hg concentrations in the samples were analyzed. Among the input materials, the most mercury was found in the manganese ore (83.1–99.7%) and mercury was mainly released through fly ash or off gas, depending on the condition of off gas cleaning system. As off gas temperature decreases, proportion and concentration of emitted gaseous elemental mercury (Hg<SUP>0</SUP>) in off gas decreases. Based on mass balance study from these three plants and national manganese production data, the total amount of mercury released from those Korean plants was estimated to 644 kg/yr. About half of it was emitted into the air while the rest was released to waste as fly ash. Many power plants tend to be built in place close to the seashore because large amount of cooling water is used. For existing desulfurization method using lime, lots of cost is needed to purchase of lime and transportation and disposal of discharged gypsum waste. Because of these reasons, a lot of research and application of desulfurization utility using seawater is actively being conducted. In this study, by-products from industrial combustion process were investigated as an alternative material to increase the alkalinity to utilize them for substituting agents of limestone or lime in wet scrubbing units. The effect of water-gas ratio and alkalinity of absorbing solution on the removal efficiency of flue gas desulfurization was investigated and found that alkalinity enhanced by industrial by-products and affected to SO2 removal efficiency. The results provided promising possibility for total alkalinity of seawater using by-products from coal-fired power plants.
순환유동층보일러의 과열기 튜브 부식에 알칼리 금속과 염소가 미치는 영향

본 연구에서는 순환유동층 보일러 과열기 튜브의 부식 원인물질을 규명하여, 부식방지를 위한 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 연료, 과열기 튜브 부식부위, 과열기 튜브에 부착된 재 및 보일러 재를 채취하여 성분분석을 수행하였다. 과열기튜브 부식부위에서 산화로 인한 O성분이 함유되어 있는 것을 확인하였다. 과열기 튜브 부착 재 및 보일러 재에서 6.1% 및 4.3%의 Cl이 분석되었으며, 이는 설계값의 약 14-20배 정도 높은 수치이다. 또한 알칼리 금속물질(K, Na, Ca)의 함량이 매우 높게 분석되었다. XRF 데이터를 이용하여 보일러에서 재의 슬래깅과 파울링에 대한 영향을 예측하였다. Basicity는 과열기 튜브 부착 재 및 보일러 재에서 각각 3.62 및 2.72로 산정되었으며, 설계값인 0.35에 비하여 높은 수치를 갖는 것으로 확인되었다. This study provides the identification of corrosion cause substances in super heater tube from a commercial scale circulating fluidized bed boiler. Electricity is produced by the combustion of biomass mainly wood waste. The biomass, super heater tube, super heater tube ash, and boiler ash were collected and components associated with corrosion were analyzed. A large amount of oxygen-containing material was found due to oxidation. The chlorine content was analyzed as 6.1% and 4.3% in super heater tube ash and boiler ash respectively which were approximately 20 and 14 times higher than those of designed values. Also, alkaline metal contents (K, Na, Ca) were very high in ash samples collected from super heater tube and boiler. The tendency of slagging and fouling was predicted based on X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) results. Basicity that can lead to slagging was estimated as 3.62 and 2.72 in super heater tube and boiler ash, respectively. Slagging would occur with ash content when considering the designed value as 0.35.

This study estimated the stability of mercury (Hg) compounds in coal combustion residuals (CCRs) from Hybrid Filter (HF) systems in coal power plants. The HF system, which was designed for the control of fine particulate matter, was found to have a performance to have a co-benefit effect by controlling mercury compounds in flue gas. The cascade impactor was used to measure the control efficiency of dust by particle size at the inlet and outlet of the HF system. Then, the particle size distribution of the HF fly ash was estimated by comparing the concentrations of the total suspended particles. The sequential extraction procedure consisting of five steps was applied to the CCRs: fly ash from the electrostatic precipitator and HF, and gypsum from the flue gas desulfurization. The behavior of Hg was affected by the development of air pollution control devices (APCDs), and as a result, we identified fly ash having a different form compared to previously reported data. The residual Hg fraction increased to a greater extent compared to the mobile Hg fraction in HF fly ash compared to ESP fly ash; the fraction estimated to be Hg<sup>0</sup> and Hg<sup>0</sup>-amalgam decreased. FGD gypsum contained a higher ratio of the mobile Hg fraction than the fly ash collected from ESP and HF. Information on the stability of Hg compounds regarding developed APCDs needs to be considered for the recycling and disposal of CCRs.
X-band Linac for a 6MeV dual-head radiation therapy gantry

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We developed a design for a 6MeV X-band linear accelerator for radiation therapy in a dual-head gantry layout. The dual-head gantry has two linacs that can be operated independently. Each X-band linac accelerates electron bunches using high-power RF and generates X-rays for radiation therapy. It requires a versatile RF system and pulse sequence to accomplish various radiation therapy procedures.</P> <P>The RF system consists of 9.3GHz, 2MW X-band magnetron and associated RF transmission components. A test linac was assembled and operated to characterize its RF performance without beam. This paper presents these results along with a description of the gantry linacs and their operational requirements.</P>

The optical properties of electroluminescent device(EL) fabricated using Alq3, (8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum) and TPD (N,N'-bis(-3-methylphenyl)-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine) with CuPc (copper phthalocyanine) buffer layer were investigated. The triple-layered EL device consists of five layers, ITO/CuPc/TPD/Alq3/Al and the cell was fabricated by vacuum evaporation method. We obtained a turn-on voltage at 5 V and the maximum emission peak at 525 nm from the measurement of EL spectrum, and EL intensities on the granularity tend to increase with the increasing the temperature of the CuPc substrate.

본 논문에서는 가입자망의 고속화를 실현하는 방안으로 개발되고 있는 B-WLL 시스템의 MAC 프로토콜을 설계하고 검증하였다. MAC 프로토콜의 설계는 DAVIC에서 제시하는 MAC 메시지를 사용하여 SDL로 설계했으며, 동적인 경쟁/예약 타임 슬롯할당 알고리즘을 적용했다. 또한 설계한 MAC 프로토콜의 유효성을 검증하기 위하여 ObjectGeode의 Simulation Builder를 이용하여 문법적인 오류를 검사하고, MSC(Message Sequence Chart)를 생성하여 프로토콜의 동작절차에 대해 검증하였다. 검증의 결과, 설계한 MAC 프로토콜이 절차에 따라 정확하게 동작했으며, B-WLL 시스템이 지원하는 모든 서비스에 대해 유효함을 확인했다. In this paper, we designed a B-WLL MAC(Media Access Control) protocol and validated its operation for implementation of high-speed subscriber networks. Our MAC protocol was designed by SDL using the DAVIC specifications based upon the variable contention/reserved time slot allocation algorithm. For validation of our MAC protocol, Syntax and semantic error check were performed by the Simulation Builder of ObjectGeode and the MSC(Message Sequence Chart) respectively. The validation results showed that our B-WLL MAC protocol is working correctly and may successfully support B-WLL services.
