Influence of the Duration of Diabetes on the Outcome of a Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

        Ko, Seung-Hyun,Park, Sin-Ae,Cho, Jae-Hyoung,Ko, Sun-Hye,Shin, Kyung-Mi,Lee, Seung-Hwan,Song, Ki-Ho,Park, Yong-Moon,Ahn, Yu-Bae Korean Diabetes Association 2012 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.36 No.3

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Diabetes education and lifestyle modification are critical components in controlling blood glucose levels of people with type 2 diabetes. Until now, available data on the effectiveness of education with respect to the duration of diabetes are limited. We investigated whether adherence to lifestyle behavior modification prompted by diabetes education was influenced by the duration of diabetes.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Two hundred and twenty-five people with type 2 diabetes were recruited for an intensive, collaborative, group-based diabetes education program with annual reinforcement. We divided the patients into two groups based on the duration of their diabetes prior to the education program (≤1 year [≤1Y] vs. ≥3 years [≥3Y]). Dietary habits, physical activity, and the frequency of blood glucose self-monitoring were evaluated with a questionnaire prior to education and at the follow-up endpoint.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The mean follow-up period was 32.2 months. The mean hemoglobin A1c (A1C) value was significantly lower in the ≤1Y group. Self-care behaviors, measured by scores for dietary habits (<I>P</I>=0.004) and physical activity (<I>P</I><0.001), were higher at the endpoint in the ≤1Y group than in the ≥3Y group. Logistic regression analysis revealed that a longer diabetes duration before education was significantly associated with mean A1C levels greater than or equal to 7.0% (53 mmol/mol).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Diabetes duration influenced the effectiveness of diabetes education on lifestyle behavior modification and glycemic control. More-intense, regular, and sustained reinforcement with encouragement may be required for individuals with longstanding type 2 diabetes.</P>

Vol.26 No.1

This paper has proposed an algorithm that detecting for dense small vehicle in large image efficiently. It is consisted of two Ensemble Deep-Learning Network algorithms based on Coarse to Fine method. The system can detect vehicle exactly on selected sub image. In the Coarse step, it can make Voting Space using the result of various Deep-Learning Network individually. To select sub-region, it makes Voting Map by to combine each Voting Space. In the Fine step, the sub-region selected in the Coarse step is transferred to final Deep-Learning Network. The sub-region can be defined by using dynamic windows. In this paper, pre-defined mapping table has used to define dynamic windows for perspective road image. Identity judgment of vehicle moving on each sub-region is determined by closest center point of bottom of the detected vehicle"s box information. And it is tracked by vehicle"s box information on the continuous images. The proposed algorithm has evaluated for performance of detection and cost in real time using day and night images captured by CCTV on the road.

      • Ginsenoside Re protects against phencyclidine-induced behavioral changes and mitochondrial dysfunction via interactive modulation of glutathione peroxidase-1 and NADPH oxidase in the dorsolateral cortex of mice

        Tran, The-Vinh,Shin, Eun-Joo,Dang, Duy-Khanh,Ko, Sung Kwon,Jeong, Ji Hoon,Nah, Seung-Yeol,Jang, Choon-Gon,Lee, Yu Jeung,Toriumi, Kazuya,Nabeshima, Toshitaka,Kim, Hyoung-Chun Elsevier 2017 Food and chemical toxicology Vol.110 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated whether ginsenoside Re (Re) modulates phencyclidine (PCP)-induced sociability deficits and recognition memory impairments to extend our recent finding. We examined the role of GPx-1 gene in the pharmacological activity of Re against mitochondrial dysfunction induced by PCP in the dorsolateral cortex of mice. Since mitochondrial oxidative stress activates NADPH oxidase (PHOX), we applied PHOX inhibitor apocynin for evaluating interactive modulation between GPx-1 and PHOX against PCP neurotoxicity. Sociability deficits and recognition memory impairments induced by PCP were more pronounced in GPx-1 knockout (KO) than in wild type (WT) mice. PCP-induced mitochondrial oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and membrane translocation of p47<I>phox</I> were more evident in GPx-1 KO than in WT. Re treatment significantly attenuated PCP-induced neurotoxic changes. Re also significantly attenuated PCP-induced sociability deficits and recognition memory impairments. The attenuation by Re was comparable to that by apocynin. The attenuation was more obvious in GPx-1 KO than in WT. Importantly, apocynin did not show any additional positive effects on the neuroprotective activity of Re, indicating that PHOX is a molecular target for therapeutic activity of Re. Our results suggest that Re requires interactive modulation between GPx activity and PHOX (p47<I>phox</I>) to exhibit neuroprotective potentials against PCP insult.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Genetic depletion of GPx-1 facilitates PCP-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative parameters and PHOX activity. </LI> <LI> Genetic depletion of GPx-1 facilitates sociability deficits and recognition memory impairments induced by PCP. </LI> <LI> Re-mediated protective potentials against PCP required the interactive modulation between GPx-1 and PHOX (p47<I>phox</I>). </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

CASE REPORT : Single Nodular Pulmonary Amyloidosis: Case Report

( Seung Hyun Lee ),( Young Chun Ko ),( Jong Pil Jeong ),( Chan Woo Park ),( Seok Ho Seo ),( Jong Taek Kim ),( Dae Won Park ),( Cheol Min Bak ),( Seung Ki Moon ),( Shin Hyoung Jo ),( Se Mi Kim ),( Ah L 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2015 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.78 No.4

Amyloidosis is defined as the presence of extra-cellular deposits of an insoluble fibrillar protein, amyloid. The pulmonary involvement of amyloidosis is usually classified as tracheobronchial, parenchymal nodular, or diffuse alveolar septal. A single nodular lesion can mimic various conditions, including malignancy, pulmonary tuberculosis, and fungal infection. To date, only one case of nodular pulmonary amyloidosis has been reported in Korea, a case involving multiple nodular lesions. Here, we report and discuss the case of a patient having single nodular amyloidosis.

      • Resistance exercise improves cardiac function and mitochondrial efficiency in diabetic rat hearts

        Ko, Tae Hee,Marquez, Jubert C.,Kim, Hyoung Kyu,Jeong, Seung Hun,Lee, SungRyul,Youm, Jae Boum,Song, In Sung,Seo, Dae Yun,Kim, Hye Jin,Won, Du Nam,Cho, Kyoung Im,Choi, Mun Gi,Rhee, Byoung Doo,Ko, Kyung Springer-Verlag 2018 Pfl ugers Arch Vol.470 No.2

<P>Metabolic disturbance and mitochondrial dysfunction are a hallmark of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DC). Resistance exercise (RE) not only enhances the condition of healthy individuals but could also improve the status of those with disease. However, the beneficial effects of RE in the prevention of DC and mitochondrial dysfunction are uncertain. Therefore, this study investigated whether RE attenuates DC by improving mitochondrial function using an in vivo rat model of diabetes. Fourteen Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty rats were assigned to sedentary control (SC, n = 7) and RE (n = 7) groups at 28 weeks of age. Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka rats were used as the non-diabetic control. The RE rats were trained by 20 repetitions of climbing a ladder 5 days per week. RE rats exhibited higher glucose uptake and lower lipid profiles, indicating changes in energy metabolism. RE rats significantly increased the ejection fraction and fractional shortening compared with the SC rats. Isolated mitochondria in RE rats showed increase in mitochondrial numbers, which were accompanied by higher expression of mitochondrial biogenesis proteins such as proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1 alpha and TFAM. Moreover, RE rats reduced proton leakage and reactive oxygen species production, with higher membrane potential. These results were accompanied by higher superoxide dismutase 2 and lower uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) and UCP3 levels in RE rats. These data suggest that RE is effective at ameliorating DC by improving mitochondrial function, which may contribute to the maintenance of diabetic cardiac contractility.</P>

      • Rheology and Physical Characteristics of Synthetic Biodegradable Aliphatic Polymer Blends Dispersed with MWNTs

        Ko, Seung Woo,Gupta, Rahul K.,Bhattacharya, Sati N.,Choi, Hyoung Jin WILEY-VCH Verlag 2010 Macromolecular Materials & Engineering Vol.295 No.4

<P>PLA/PBAT blends and PLA/PBAT/MWNT nanocomposite systems were prepared via a melt mixing process to examine their thermal and rheological properties. To compare the polymer blend/MWNT nanocomposite with a pure polymer/MWNT nanocomposite, PLA/MWNT, PBAT/MWNT, and PLA/PBAT/MWNT nanocomposite systems were prepared. TEM and SEM were used to observe that one phase has better affinity with the MWNT, while the MWNT was found to increase both the thermal properties of the PLA/PBAT blends and rheological properties of the PLA/PBAT/MWNT nanocomposite with distinct shear-thinning behavior due to the addition of the MWNT. An increase in the storage (G′) and loss (G″) moduli for the PLA/PBT/MWNT nanocomposite was also observed.</P><P> <img src='wiley_img_2010/14387492-2010-295-4-MAME200900390-gra001.gif' alt='wiley_img_2010/14387492-2010-295-4-MAME200900390-gra001'> </P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>MWNTs dispersed in polymers contribute significantly to the physical and rheological properties of polymer blend/MWNT nanocomposite systems. • Magnetorheological Characteristics of Polymer Coated Magnetite Particle Composites With Carbon Nanotube Nanohybrid

Seung Woo Ko,Min Ki Hong,Hyoung Jin Choi,Beyong Hwan Ryu IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on magnetics Vol.45 No.6

<P>This study demonstrates physical adsorption of polymer coated nano-sized magnetite (Fe3O4) onto multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) surface. A new hybrid material was made following four consecutive procedures of co-precipitation, polymer coating, functionalized MWNT, and ultrasonication method. Polymer coated magnetite particle (MaPAm) composites with MWNT nanohybrid (MaPAmNT) were acquired. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to investigate their nanostructure and morphology, thus verifying that polyacrylamide coated magnetite particles were well adsorbed onto surface of the MWNT. From thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data, we also confirmed compositions of the MaPAmNT. Magnetorheological (MR) properties of the MaPAmNT under an external magnetic field were investigated, exhibiting typical MR behavior of yield stress and shear stress.</P>

        Ko, Yohan,Shim, Jaeho,Lee, Chil-Hyoung,Lee, Kyu Seung,Cho, Hyunjin,Lee, Ki-Tae,Son, Dong Ick Elsevier 2018 Materials letters Vol.217 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report on the in-situ chemical growth of unique core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with single layer graphene on the surface of CuO QDs and their structural, optical and electrical properties. The CuO/graphene QDs were synthesized through a simple and hydrothermal technique. In order to enhance performance electrochemical energy storages, we have developed core (active material)/shell (conductive material) type CuO/graphene QDs as electrode materials using the combined electrolytes (KOH + LiCl). As a result, the performance of electrochemical energy storages exhibits specific capacitance of 154 F g−1 at current density of 1 A g−1 and cycling stability with 84% capacitance retention after 3,000 cycles.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The CuO/G QDs were synthesized through a simple and hydrothermal technique. </LI> <LI> The capacitance has enhanced using the combined hybrid electrolyte (KOH + LiCl). </LI> <LI> Specific capacitance exhibits 154 F g−1 at current density of 1 A g−1. </LI> <LI> Cycling stability show 84% capacitance retention after 3,000 cycles. </LI> </UL> </P>
