The Association of Workplace Psychosocial Factors and Musculoskeletal Pain Among Korean Emotional Laborers

Baek, Kiook,Yang, Seonhee,Lee, Miyoung,Chung, Insung Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2018 Safety and health at work Vol.9 No.2

Background: Many studies have reported negative psychological or physical effects of emotional labor. Relationship between work-related musculoskeletal disorder and psychosocial factors has been reported. To manage organizational and psychosocial factors of musculoskeletal disorder with work place intervention among emotional laborers, the factors contributing to musculoskeletal pain must be identified and clarified. Methods: Data from the fourth Korean Working Conditions Survey was analyzed. Based on the questionnaire, we selected emotional laborers and included 3,979 participants, excluding participants whose variables were of interest to the researcher. Weight variable was applied. The association with musculoskeletal pain and psychosocial factors, such as workload, monotonous work, job control, social support, and job satisfaction, was investigated. Results: Univariate analysis demonstrated that there was a statistically significant relationship between social support, job satisfaction, and musculoskeletal pain. In multivariate analysis, job satisfaction showed a strong correlation with musculoskeletal pain at all sites. Social support was significantly associated with backache. Monotonous work seemed to reduce the pain in the neck and/or upper limbs. Job control and work intensity were not significantly associated with musculoskeletal pain. Conclusion: In this study, job satisfaction was significantly associated with musculoskeletal pain, and social support among the social psychological stressors could reduce musculoskeletal pain. However, unlike previously known, the presence of monotonous work resulted in reduced musculoskeletal pain. The results of this study will help to establish the direction of improvement of atmosphere in the workplace to prevent the musculoskeletal pain of emotional laborers.

Surface-independent vertical orientation of cylindrical microdomains in block copolymer thin films directed by comb-coil architecture

        Seo, Myungeun,Shin, Seonhee,Ku, Sejin,Jin, Sangwoo,Kim, Jin-Baek,Ree, Moonhor,Kim, Sang Youl Royal Society of Chemistry 2010 Journal of materials chemistry Vol.20 No.1

Vertically oriented cylindrical microdomains of block copolymer thin films consisting of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) were fabricated regardless of the substrate by introduction of a grafted architecture into the diblock copolymer chains. A series of comb-coil block copolymers, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-(2-bromopropionyloxy)-ethyl acrylate)-g-polystyrene (PMMA-b-PBPEA-g-PS) with various lengths of PS were synthesized by combination of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). When the volume fraction of PS was 75%, microphase separation produced cylindrical microdomains of PMMA surrounded by PS matrix in a thin film state after thermal annealing. Analysis of the thin films after subsequent etching of PMMA domains by atomic force microscopy, cross-sectional scanning electron microscope images and grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements showed that the microdomains were oriented perpendicular to various substrates including metals, silicon, polymers, and even patterned surfaces. Steric repulsion between the grafted chains during the phase separation was attributed to the driving force for perpendicular orientation of the cylindrical microdomains without the aid of external fields.

Graphic Abstract

Cylindrical poly(methyl methacrylate) microdomains in a polystyrene matrix are oriented perpendicular to any substrate without additional surface treatment, as demonstrated on a variety of substrates. This is attributed to the block-copolymer’s comb-coil architecture.

Pneumoconiosis in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) spray worker

        Namhoon Lee,Kiook Baek,Soohyun Park,Inho Hwang,Insung Chung,Wonil Choi,Hyera Jung,Miyoung Lee,Seonhee Yang 대한직업환경의학회 2018 대한직업환경의학회지 Vol.30 No.-

Background: Using analysis of air samples from the workplace, we report on one case of pneumoconiosis in an individual who has been working in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) spraying process for 28 years. Case presentation: The patient was diagnosed with granulomatous lung disease caused by PTFE using computed tomography (CT), lung biopsy and electron microscopy. To assess the qualitative and quantitative exposure to PTFE in workplace, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed on air samples from the workplace. The presence of PTFE particles was confirmed, and the airborne concentration of PTFE was estimated to be 0.75 mg/㎥. Conclusions: This case demonstrates that long-term exposure to PTFE spraying can cause granulomatous lung lesions such as pneumoconiosis; such lesions appear to be caused not by the degradation products of PTFE from high temperatures but by spraying the particles of PTFE. Along with air-sampling analysis, we suggest monitoring the concentration of airborne PTFE particles related to chronic lung disease.

Correlation between the actual sleep time 24 hours prior to an examination and the time to achieve chloral hydrate sedation in pediatric patients in South Korea: a prospective cohort study

        Mijung Park,Ji Um,So Hyun Kim,Jiseon Yoon,Yeonjae Lee,Jiyeong Kwon,Seonhee Baek,Dong Yeon Kim 한국아동간호학회 2023 Child Health Nursing Research Vol.29 No.1

Purpose: This study investigated correlations between the actual sleep time 24 hours prior to an examination and the time to achieve chloral hydrate sedation in pediatric patients. Methods: With parental consent, 84 children who were placed under moderate or deep sedation with chloral hydrate for examinations from November 19, 2020 to July 9, 2022 were recruited. Results: Patients' average age was 19.9 months. Pediatric neurology patients and those who underwent electroencephalography took significantly longer to achieve sedation with chloral hydrate. There was a negative correlation between the time to achieve sedation and actual sleep time within 24 hours prior to the examination. Positive correlations were found between the actual sleep time 24 hoursprior to the examination and the second dose per weight, as well as between the sedation recovery time and awake hours before the examination. Conclusion: Sleep restriction is not an effective adjuvant therapy for chloral hydrate sedation in children, and sedation effects vary according to pediatric patients' characteristics. Therefore, it would be possible to reduce the unnecessary efforts of caregivers who restrict children's sleep for examinations. It is more important to educate parents about safe sedation than about sleep restriction.
