Effect of microorganism on engineering properties of cohesive soils

        Yasodian, Sheela Evangeline,Dutta, Rakesh Kumar,Mathew, Lea,Anima, T.M.,Seena, S.B. Techno-Press 2012 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.4 No.2

This paper presents the study of the effect of microorganism Bacillus pasteurii on the properties such as Atterbergs' limit and unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils. The results of this study reveal that the liquid limit and plasticity index for all clay soils decreased and the unconfined compressive strength increased. Decrease in plasticity index is very high for Kuttanad clay followed by bentonite and laterite. The unconfined compressive strength increased for all the soils. The increase was high for Kuttanad soil and low for laterite soil. After 24 h of treatment the improvement in the soil properties is comparatively less. Besides the specific bacteria selected Bacillus pasteurii, other microorganisms may also be taking part in calcite precipitation thereby causing soil cementation. But the naturally present microorganisms alone cannot work on the calcite precipitation.

Hysteresis Performance of Through Bolted Connections in Steel Beam to Circular CFST Column

        M. S. Ajith,K. P. Beena,S. Sheela 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.25 No.7

Concrete Filled Steel Tubes (CFSTs) with through bolt connections are demonstrated to be satisfactory for seismic performance. Due to better confinement effect, circular CFST columns possess higher strength to weight ratio compared to square CFST. The only limiting factor in application of circular CFST in construction is the difficulty in joining with the beams. This paper presents an experimental study on hysteretic behavior of interior joint between circular CFST column and steel beam using extended end plates with through bolt. The study focuses on the comparison of connection using flat extended end plate with straight bolts and curved extended end plate with split bolt assembly for circular CFST columns. The experimental results were analysed in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, failure mode and energy dissipation for the evaluation of cyclic performance. The results indicate that the seismic resistance agrees with seismic recommendations of American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the split bolt assembly increases the performance remarkably. For comprehension of mechanism and prediction of shear capacity of the panel zone for curved endplates, a mathematical model was generated. This includes the influence of axial load, prestressing induced by bolt tightening, anchorage and the concrete strut action. The prediction accuracy was compared with the test result and it showed sound correlation.

Analysis of Tunnelling Rate Effect on Single Electron Transistor

        Sheela. L,N. B. Balamurugan,S. Sudha,J. Jasmine 대한전기학회 2014 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.9 No.5

This paper presents the modeling of Single Electron Transistor (SET) based on Physical model of a device and its equivalent circuit. The physical model is derived from Schrodinger equation. The wave function of the electrode is calculated using Hartree-Fock method and the quantum dot calculation is obtained from WKB approximation. The resulting wave functions are used to compute tunneling rates. From the tunneling rate the current is calculated. The equivalent circuit model discuss about the effect of capacitance on tunneling probability and free energy change. The parameters of equivalent circuit are extracted and optimized using genetic algorithm. The effect of tunneling probability, temperature variation effect on tunneling rate, coulomb blockade effect and current voltage characteristics are discussed.

New criteria to fix number of hidden neurons in multilayer perceptron networks for wind speed prediction

        Sheela, K. Gnana,Deepa, S.N. Techno-Press 2014 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.18 No.6

This paper proposes new criteria to fix hidden neuron in Multilayer Perceptron Networks for wind speed prediction in renewable energy systems. To fix hidden neurons, 101 various criteria are examined based on the estimated mean squared error. The results show that proposed approach performs better in terms of testing mean squared errors. The convergence analysis is performed for the various proposed criteria. Mean squared error is used as an indicator for fixing neuron in hidden layer. The proposed criteria find solution to fix hidden neuron in neural networks. This approach is effective, accurate with minimal error than other approaches. The significance of increasing the number of hidden neurons in multilayer perceptron network is also analyzed using these criteria. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulations were conducted on real time wind data. Simulations infer that with minimum mean squared error the proposed approach can be used for wind speed prediction in renewable energy systems.
