      • Boundary and Sense of Place in Traditional Korean Dwelling

2003 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.3 No.2

A place cannot exist without some kind of boundary and man`s essential relationship to places consists in dwellings, the basic property of human existence. Loss of the sense of place in our dwelling resulted from the negation of the meaning of boundary in our traditional dwelling. Traditional Korean residences have a strong sense of place with their layering of the boundaries. Investigation of the dialectical expansion of the boundary in Korean dwelling space will propose another approach for the discourse of connection between contemporary architecture and cultural tradition in Korea.

      • Mainstreaming Gender Issues in Urban Design

Vol.2013 No.9

Gender equality issues is the center of economic revitalization and social integration. City planning policy which deals with the everyday life of the resident can eliminate the handicap improving the quality of everyday life. Urban policy that covers the welfare of marginalized people is inevitably connected to the gender issues. The problem of equality issue is naturally connected to the policy for the minority in the city, such as children, old people and handicapped as well as women. However, the opinion of women is usually treated as a separate category and is given the minimum priority. Women tend to be restricted in the private sector hidden from public view. They suffered from the policy that did not reflect women"s need. Everyday life of neighborhood frames the quality of women"s life. Improving the structure of neighborhood is the key issue of gender mainstreaming in urban planning. Therefore we need to ask whether the structure of the neighborhood allows the integration of work and care, and whether the triangle of place for job, home and leisure is accessible safely through public transportation. The key issues and physical setting that allows these critical issues can be summarized as follows. · Integration of work and everyday life-Community activity hub supporting family care · Access to open community service-Safe and easy access to the service anytime/anywhere by diverse method · Safety in everyday life-Space structure allowing natural surveillance · Connected mobility-Inclusive public transportation allowing diversity · Diversity through participation-Mixed land use plan reflecting opinion of women with diverse life cycle and life style Strategy that support those value need to be carefully prepared for the success of urban policy in the metropolis.

Vol.23 No.2

In the context of lifelong education program for an aging society and information age, elementary school facilities are expected to accommodate various people in diverse age group and diverse physical abilities. Introduction of the 'Universal Design' concept seems inevitable in school environment in terms of public infra structure for community. However, in architectural point of view, unlike foreign examples, simply applied barrier-free and safety standards of domestic guidelines based on dimensional data does not function enough to achieve universal design in authentic manner. This study is focused on this issue and suggests the direction of improvement for architectural design guidelines. Through the comparative analysis of foreign and domestic design guidelines, two principles of universal design-'Flexibility in Use', 'Perceptile Information'- are found to be lacking in the domestic design guidelines for elementary school facilities. It is expected for government authority to develop more concrete guidelines to achieve universal design for school as a basic public space in the community.

Vol.20 No.2

Due to the lack of available site in urban setting outdoor space in elementary schools are getting smaller and tend to be replaced by indoor spaces. Focusing on courtyard, piloti space and roof space, this study analyzed the current condition and usage of the outdoor spaces in the urban mini-schools based on the analysis of architectural drawing, interview, survey, and observation. Following issues are found for appropriate planning for outdoor spaces in the urban mini-schools. Firstly, roof space needs to be coordinated with the physical education and outdoor class curriculum and should be planned separately for quiet activities. Secondly, the piloti space should be planned as an independent space rather than a connection between classroom and outdoor space, with appropriate surveillance from teacher's space for the lower graders. Thirdly, courtyard space, typical space in urban mini school surrounded by densely arranged buildings, should be thermally controlled for outdoor class or resting with appropriate screen from noise to keep quiet atmosphere.

Vol.15 No.5

The sense of place at school environment becomes more important as children increasingly spend more time in school and children's attachment to the environment affects the cognition development of children. The goal of this research is to identify characteristics that enhance the sense of place for children in outdoor space and check the possibilities of forming it in the school environments. Through the analysis of design document and design report for schematic design of elementary school which is executed through Korean Institute of Educational Facilities between 2002-2005, 47cases from 32elementary schools are analyzed. As a result it is found that designers tend to orient towards the visual aspects compared to other invisible aspects such as thermal comfort and participation of children, which is extracted as a key characteristics of forming a sense of place for children. More attention is required to enhance the sense of place in school environment to support the child development in everyday space.

Vol.27 No.4

This research intends to find out the characteristics of sense of place in the elementary school that is emerging under the new policy that allows school without playground, which is known to be critical for the development of children. Sense of place is an essential factor in the developmental process as it is related with the cognition development of children. Through this research it is found out that presence of playground is essential as children's sense of place in school yard is hard to be formed without well-planned outdoor space. It is also found out that those schools without school yard have affected the social aspect of school due to the lack of socializing space. Sense of place in those schools was formed only when the quality of the outdoor space is certain level and the size of the outdoor space was irrelevant to the children's attachment to the school space. Alternative outdoor space easily accessible from the school is found out to be helpful in lessening the feeling of deprivation as the presence of school yard is deeply related with the pride of children in the culture that school yard is taken for granted.
