<P>An MMIC amplifier operating at the highest reported frequency up to date for indium-phosphide double-heterojunction bipolar (DHBT) transistor technology is presented. The amplifier chain consists of seven unit-cell stages that contain differential-pair common-base HBTs and compact inverted microstrip matching networks. Amplifier operation in differential mode generates a virtual RF ground at a convenient location inside the unit cell. The measurements at 325 GHz show a small signal gain of 25 dB and a maximum output power of -1.5 dBm. An amplifier gain of greater than 20 dB is observed over 60 GHz bandwidth extending from 285 to 345 GHz.</P>

<P>A terahertz differential eight-stage amplifier fabricated using state-of-the-art 125 nm double-heterojunction bipolar transistors (DHBT) is presented. The four-port unit-cell chain is designed for optimum forward differential gain with no even and odd-mode reverse gains. Unbalanced single-ended feed networks are added to preserve the amplifier gain without inducing oscillations. The proposed feed scheme is validated by a stable amplifier operation in 325-to-450 GHz range with the peak gain of 22 dB at 375 GHz.</P>
Trading Blocs and Market Performance under Duopolistic Competition

This paper uses a three-country duopoly model to examine the effects of lowered trade barriers when a new entrant joins a trading bloc. There are two firms - a small-country firm and a large-country firm within the bloc - and three markets -two within and one (new entrant) outside the bloc. The results from trade bloc expansion vary for when marginal cost is falling with respect to output, but are clear when marginal cost is rising. In the latter case, profits improve more for the small-country firm than for the large-country firm. Consequences on prices, production, and trade are also considered.

Pregnant Yorkshire gilts were utilized to investigate the efficacy of exogenous administration of pST and/or insulin in enhancing prenatal piglet survival, uteroplacental and umbilical cord growth and development. Gilts were randomly assigned in a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement to four treatment combinations consisting of either daily i.m. injections of 5 mg pST (P, n=23); 0.50 IU/kg of insulin (I, n=23); combination of pST and insulin (P+I, n=23); or 1 ml of saline as control (C, n=23) from gestation Day 30 to 70. All gilts were sacrificed on gestation d 113 to evaluate piglet survival and uteroplacental or umbilical cord development Uteri were longer (346.3 vs 325.7 cm; p<0.05), and heavier (3122.8 vs 2940.7 g; p<0.05) in insulin treated gilts. Only placental macroscopic surface area was enhanced by maternal insulin injections (p<0.05) Incidence of umbilical cord abnormalities were low (14.3%), and they were independent of maternal treatment, occurring more in short cords than in long ones (21 vs 12%; p<0.05). A 6% increase in cord length (53.2 vs 48.6 cm; p=<0.05) was observed in piglets from treated gilts compared with controls. Significant sex differences (in favour of males) were observed in piglet weight, crown rump length and for most umbilical or placental parameters. Gilt weight gains from breeding to Day 113 of gestation were 10% and 15% greater in pST and insulin treated gilts compared with controls. These data indicate that prepartum injections of pST and/or insulin to gestating gilts seem to have a beneficial effect on uteroplacental or umbilical cord development and promote conditions conducive for perinatal piglet survival.

To investigate the effects of immunization against somatostatin (SRIF) on growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass quality; forth-eight Yorkshire gilts ($age=37.5{\pm}4.3d,\;wt=8.2{\pm}1.6kg$) were randomly assigned to one of the following three treatments (1) control, (2) bovine serum albumin (BSA) and (3) SRIF. Cyclic SRIF was conjugated to BSA as the antigen containing 1 mg of SRIF diluted in 3 ml of saline. The conjugate was injected subsutaneously together with bacterial cell protein (BP) adjuvant on both sides of the neck of each gilt as the initial injection with three subsequent booster injections. Throughout the experiment all pigs were fed ad libitum a corn-soy diet containing 20% protein. Body weight and feed intake were measured on a weekly basis. All pigs in the experiment were slaughtered when they approached 101 kg body weight on the weekly weigh day. After slaughter, carcass parameters were analyzed to assess carcass quality. Results revealed that there were no differences among SRIF, BSA and control treatments for average daily gain, feed efficiency and feed intake during the first 5 wk of the experiment and from 6 wk to slaughter. The results for carcass analysis indicated that active immunization against SRIF had no effect on fat content, lean yield, water content and Canadian carcass index These data, collectively, suggest that the protocol employed in the present investigation for active immunization against SRIF is not an effective method for the enhancement of pig growth and improvement of feed efficiency and carcass quality.

Evaluation of retrieval systems is mostly limited to laboratory settings and rarely considers changes of performance over time. This article presents an evaluation of retrieval systems for internal Web site search systems between the years 2006 and 2011. A holistic evaluation methodology for real Web sites was developed which includes tests for functionality, search quality, and user interaction. Among other sites, one set of 20 Web site search systems was evaluated three times in different years and no substantial improvement could be shown. It is surprising that the communication between site and user still leads to very poor results in many cases. Overall, the quality of these search systems could be improved, and several areas for improvement are apparent from our evaluation. For a comparison, Google’s site search function was also tested with the same tasks.
