The European Activation System (EASY) has been continuously developed and improved formore than 20 years. Its primary purpose is to carry out neutron- proton- and deuteron-induced activation calculations in support of nuclear technology, particularly for nuclear material selection, design and optimization. It comprises the EAF nuclear data libraries and the FISPACT inventory code. For fusion applications, materials used for the construction of ITER, particularly plasma facing components, will be submitted to intense neutron irradiation. These materials may be evaluated using EASY for their nuclide inventory, He gas production and decay heat production over time, for example. EASY includes data to 60 MeV, making it also relevant for IFMIF analysis, and now covers 66,256 reactions. Such large libraries require an extensive validation process, which includes the statistical analysis of cross sections (SACS) and comparisons with differential and integral data. The suite of these methods has now been extended to evaluate the next library release, EAF-2010. Furthermore, significant attention has been focused on improving the uncertainty file, a unique feature of EAF libraries. In this work we discuss recent data improvements to be included in EAF-2010 and extensions to the treatment of uncertainties both in EAF and within EASY.

PREVENTION OF HYDROXYL RADICAL-INDUCED ERYTHROCYTE HEMOLYSIS BY PROTEIN THIOLS

A system for studying oxidative hemolysis has been used by controling UV-irradiation and concentration of a novel molecular probe, N,N'-bis(2-hydroperoxy-2-methoxyethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetra-carboxylic diimide (NP-III), which generates hydroxyl radical upon longer wavelength photoirradiation (> 350 nm). NP-III induces 25~30% of hemolysis at low concentration (50 $\mu$M) for 3h-irradiation of UVA. The simultaneous treatment of N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) with NP-IH completely hemotyzed erythrocytes under the same conditions as NP-III alone by both decreasing thiol group and increasing lipid peroxidation in erythrocyte membrane. However. thiol-reducing agents prevented the protein-crosslinking and lipid peroxidation on the NEM-synergistic hemolysis by partially scavenging hydroxyl radical and maintaining the thiol group of erythrocyte membrane in the reduced state. In addition, erythrocytes pretreated with 2,2,5,7,8-pentamethyl-6-hydroxychromane (PMC), vitamin E homologue was able to delay and decrease the lipid peroxidation when compared to cells pretreated with both NEM and PMC. We suggest that the presence of reduced thiols in inner membrane protein by GSH can prevent the protein-crosslinking and the lipid peroxidation, and eventually prevent the oxidative hemolysis of erythrocyte.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we discuss a method of constructing separable representations of the <SUP> C ⁎ </SUP> -algebras associated to strongly connected row-finite <I>k</I>-graphs Λ. We begin by giving an alternative characterization of the Λ-semibranching function systems introduced in an earlier paper, with an eye towards constructing such representations that are faithful. Our new characterization allows us to more easily check that examples satisfy certain necessary and sufficient conditions. We present a variety of new examples relying on this characterization. We then use some of these methods and a direct limit procedure to identify a faithful separable representation for any row-finite source-free <I>k</I>-graph.</P>
