• Role of CD10 Immunohistochemical Expression in Predicting Aggressive Behavior of Phylloides Tumors

Tariq, Muhammad Usman,Haroon, Saroona,Kayani, Naila Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.8

Background: Phylloides tumors are rare breast neoplasms with a variable clinical course depending on the tumor category. Along with histologic features, the role of immunohistochemical staining has been studied in predicting their behavior. Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the role of CD 10 immunohistochemical staining in predicting survival, recurrence and metastasis in phylloides tumor. We also evaluated correlations of other clinicopathological features with overall and disease-free survival. Materials and Methods: CD10 expression was studied in 82 phylloides tumors divided into recurrent/metastatic and non-recurrent/non-metastatic cohorts. The Chi-square test was applied to determine the significance of differences in CD10 expression between outcome cohorts. Uni and multivariate survival analyses were also performed using log-rank test and Cox regression hazard models. Results: All 3 metastatic cases, 5 out of 6 (83.3%) recurrent cases and 37out of 73 (50.7%) non-recurrent and non-metastatic cases expressed significant (2+ or 3+) staining for CD10. This expression significantly varied between outcome cohorts (p<0.03). Tumor category and histological features including mitotic count and necrosis correlated significantly with recurrence and metastasis. A significant decrease in overall and disease free survival was seen with CD10 positivity, malignant category, increased mitoses and necrosis. Neither CD10 expression nor any other clinicopathologic feature proved to be an independent prognostic indicator in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: CD10 immunohistochemical staining can be used as a predictive tool for phylloides tumor but this expression should be interpreted in conjunction with tumor category.

      • CORRELATION BASED GUIDED DEPTH FILTERING IN SHAPE FROM FOCUS

Usman Ali,Muhammad Tariq Mahmood 한국통신학회 2020 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2020 No.8

In the literature, shape-from-focus (SFF) techniques do not consider any guidance information for depth enhancement. As a result, reconstructed depth map might not accurately contain the structures of the scene. In this letter, we suggest to apply guided image filtering for the enhancement of depth map in SFF. For this, a novel guidance map for SFF has been crafted that is based on the correlation among the image sequence and focus volume along the optical axis. When this guidance map is incorporated for the guided filtering of depth map, a remarkable improvement has been achieved in the quality of reconstructed depth maps.

Improving defocus blur measures using robust regularization

Usman Ali,Muhammad Tariq Mahmood 한국통신학회 2022 ICT Express Vol.8 No.3

This paper presents a robust regularization scheme for the enhancement of initial blur map in single image blur detection. The proposed technique considers the structural differences between guidance and initial blur map. Specifically, we propose to improve the initial blur map by optimizing a nonconvex energy function that jointly leverages structural information from guidance and blur map. Nonconvex problem is solved by majorize-minimize algorithm and an improved blur map is obtained that is adequately smooth and has better edge-preserving properties. Ultimately, this results into high-quality blur segmentation.

      • IMAGE FOCUS VOLUME REGULARIZATION THROUGH 3D WEIGHTED LEAST SQUARES IN SHAPE FROM FOCUS

Usman Ali,Muhammad Tariq Mahmood 한국통신학회 2019 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2019 No.6

In shape from focus (SFF) methods, the quality of image focus volume highly affects the accuracy of reconstructed depth map. Traditionally, linear filtering in 2D is applied on the image focus volume to filter out the noisy focus values. However, while trying to rectify the noisy focus measurements, this technique also modifies the accurate focus measurements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to enhance the image focus volume by applying 3-dimensional weighted least squares (3D-WLS) based regularization scheme. Further, we suggest to compute weights from the image sequence, and thus image sequence acts like a structural prior and guidance volume. The solution of 3D-WLS optimization problem has been approximated by solving a sequence of 1D linear sub-problems. Experimental results of synthetic and real image sequences demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Comparison of Mechanical Behavior of Biaxial, Unidirectional and Standard Woven Fabric Reinforced Composites

        Usman Ahmed,Asra Tariq,Yasir Nawab,Khubab Shaker,Zubair Khaliq,Muhammad Umair 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.6

The conventional woven fabrics (plain, twill, satin, etc.) have yarn undulations, that may lead to the fibre breakageand loss of mechanical strength. This problem was resolved using unidirectional woven structures having straight yarns, butthey provide strength in one direction only. A possible solution is the use of biaxial fabric having yarns at ±45 o asreinforcement, but its fabrication cost is too high. The current study focussed on the development of a composite materialusing conventional fabrics having comparable properties with biaxial fabric composites. Three different reinforcements(plain, twill and unidirectional) were prepared using glass fibre. For composite fabrication, plies were cut, stacked at ±45 oand infused with unsaturated polyester resin to produce a composite equivalent to the biaxial composite. Similarly, thestitched composites were also fabricated by stitching the similar stack (using chain stitch class 101) before impregnating withresin. Laminated composites from biaxial fabric (both stitched and unstitched) were also produced for comparison. All thesecomposites were characterised for tensile and impact properties. The tensile strength of stitched unidirectional compositeswas higher as compared to the other woven and biaxial structures. Similarly, the impact strength was also higher for stitchedunidirectional composite. Hence, the ±45 o stacked unidirectional composite may be used as a potential replacement of biaxialcomposite.

Childhood Neuroendocrine Tumors of Appendix: Suggested Approach and Management

        Muhammad Matloob Alam,Abdulrhman Alathaibi,Mohamed Magdi Refai,Abdulaziz Alsaedi,Muhammad Usman Tariq 대한소아혈액종양학회 2023 Clinical Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Vol.30 No.2

Appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors (NET) although rare, but the most common tu-mors of the gastrointestinal tract in children and adolescents. NET of the appendix is typically undiagnosed preoperatively, are usually not associated with specific neu-roendocrine symptoms, and a high percentage are initially identified by pathologists. For well-differentiated tumors of <1 cm and complete (R0) resection, no follow-up is required. Unlikely, tumor size >2 cm or tumor with high-risk features confer a relevant risk of recurrence and further imaging and surgical procedures are warranted. No consensus, clear recommendation or management guidelines are available for the management of appendiceal NET in children. Herein, current article will provide an overview of literature and suggested guidelines for evaluation and management of childhood neuroendocrine tumors of appendix.

Image focus volume regularization for shape from focus through 3D weighted least squares

Ali, Usman,Pruks, Vitalii,Mahmood, Muhammad Tariq Elsevier science 2019 Information sciences Vol.489 No.-

Abstract

In shape from focus (SFF) methods, the accuracy of the depth map highly depends on the quality of image focus volume. Generally, a linear filtering or averaging using a 2D mask is applied on each slice of the focus volume to filter out the noisy focus measures. This approach may not provide optimal results due to the inherent problems associated with linear filtering. In this paper, the image focus volume is regularized by applying 3D weighted least squares (3D-WLS) approach that enhances the volume to better reconstruct the 3D shape. The weights for the regularization have been computed from the image sequence, and here image sequence acts like a structural prior and guidance volume. Such kind of guided filtering of focus volume has not been carried out earlier. 3D-WLS optimization problem has been solved in an efficient separable manner, such that the solution has been approximated by solving a sequence of 1D linear sub-problems. Sequentially for each dimension, a tridiagonal matrix is used to solve the three-point inhomogeneous Laplacian matrix. Experiments conducted on real and synthetic image sequences demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

There's No Such Thing as Free Lunch but Envy among Young Facebookers

( Tassawar Iqbal ),( Muhammad Tariq Yousafzai ),( Sabeen Ali ),( Kinza Sattar ),( Muhammad Qaiser Saleem ),( Usman Habib ),( Atta Ur Rehman Khan ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2018 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.12 No.10

Facebook has quickly infused across cultures worldwide to become a common household term for diverse spectra of netizens, especially youngsters. Inherently, interactive in nature, Facebook provides a common cyber enabled platform for online interactions with social friends, living across the world. However, despite its merits, users also experience certain disadvantages, which include but are not limited to rise in feelings of social comparison, decline in self-esteem, contentment and general subjective well-being. This work aims to determine the role of Facebook in spreading envy and identify factors that trigger such emotions. Due to abductive nature of the study, we used pilot interviews and consulted relevant literature to formulate hypotheses. Further, we used deductive approach and conducted a survey. The results showed that frequent use of Facebook, particularly passive following is main predictor of envy, and social interaction is the biggest cause for development of envious feelings in Facebook users. However, insignificant variation was found while investigating relationship between envy and factors, such as pretentiousness, time spent, accomplishment, everything in life, likes on posts, popularity across genders, marital status and genre.
