Commercial fishery assessment of Malaysian water offshore structure

        Mohd Hairil Mohd,Mohd Izzat Mohd Thiyahuddin,Mohd Asamudin A Rahman,Tan Chun Hong,Hii Yii Siang,Nor Adlina Othman,Azam Abdul Rahman,Ahmad Rizal Abdul Rahman,Ahmad Fitriadhy 한국수산과학회 2022 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.25 No.9

To have a better understanding of the impact of the PETRONAS oil and gas platform on commercial fisheries activities, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) examined two approaches which are data collection from satellite and data collection from fishermen and anglers. By profiling the anglers who utilize reefed oil and gas structures for fishing, it can determine if the design and location of the reef platforms will benefit or negatively impacts those anglers and fisherman. Furthermore, this assessment will be contributing to the knowledge regarding the value of offshore oil and gas platforms as fisheries resources. Collectively, the apparent fishing activity data included, combined with the findings in the reefing viability index will help to inform PETRONAS’s future decommissioning decisions and may help determine if the design and proposed locations for future rigs-to-reefs candidates would benefit commercial fishing groups, further qualifying them as appropriate artificial reef candidates. The method applied in this study is approaching by using a data satellite known as Google’s Global Fishing Watch technology, which is one of the applications to measure commercial fishing efforts around the globe. The apparent commercial fishing effort around the selected twelve PETRONAS platforms was analyzed from January 2012 to December 2018. Using the data collection from fishermen which is the total estimation of commercial fish value cost (in Malaysia ringgit, MYR [RM]) in Peninsular Malaysia Asset, Sabah Asset, and Sarawak Operation region. The data were extracted every month from 2016 to 2018 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration database. Most of the selected platforms that show a high frequency of vessels around the year are platform KP-A, platform BG-A and platform PL-B. The estimated values of commercial fishes varied between platforms, with ranged from RM 10,209.92 to RM 89,023.78. Thus, platforms with high commercial fish value are selected for reefing in-situ and will serve multi-purposes and benefit the locals as well as the country. The current study has successfully assessed the potential reefing area of the Malaysian offshore environment with greater representativeness and this paper focused on its potential as a new fishing ground.

      • Numerical simulations of vortex-induced vibrations on vertical cylindrical structure with different aspect ratios

Rahman, Mohd Asamudin A.,Leggoe, Jeremy,Thiagarajan, Krish,Mohd, Mohd Hairil,Paik, Jeom Kee Taylor Francis 2016 SHIPS AND OFFSHORE STRUCTURES Vol.11 No.4

This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) for different aspect ratio (L/D) cylinder. Of particular interest was to measure hydrodynamic forces and numerically investigate the wake behaviour of VIV while varying the aspect ratio. The simulation models represented the actual experimental conditions with idealised free-surface boundary condition to capture the responses from fluid-structure interaction phenomenon. The simulations were performed in the subcritical flow region (7.4x10(3) < Re < 2x10(5)), corresponding to a range of reduced velocity (U-r) from 2 to 14. The results of the cases studied were discussed and compared with the experimental data to verify the accuracy and validity of the present simulation. The comparisons have shown a similar curved-shape drag coefficient plot, and however underestimated the value of the drag coefficients over the reduced velocity. Additionally, the simulations seemed to capture a higher lift force response compared with the experimental data for a low aspect ratio. The correlation length was observed to be longer for larger aspect ratio and proportionally decreases as the aspect ratio decreases.

Investigation of the corrosion factor to the global strength of aging offshore jacket platforms under different marine zones

Othman Nor Adlina,Mohd Mohd Hairil,A Rahman Mohd Asamudin,Musa Mohd Azlan,Fitriadhy Ahmad 대한조선학회 2023 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.15 No.-

This paper investigates the corrosion factor to the global strength of aging offshore jacket platforms in different marine zones. The time-dependent corrosion wastage model from Melchers, an active corrosion expert, by considering different marine zones, i.e., atmospheric, splash, and immersion. In addition, three aged jacket platform models of the originally installed platform were selected to investigate the effect of corrosion wastage on global strength. The jacket platform's global strength is calculated by the Reserve Strength Ratio (RSR) value. RSR is obtained via nonlinear static pushover analysis and is always used to estimate overall structure strength reserves. Safety assessment is evaluated by the PETRONAS Technical Standard (PTS). According to this study, immersion zone corrosion is the most influential zone after splash zone corrosion. Furthermore, the study also predicts the lifetime of each jacket platform, and it is useful for structural engineers to estimate corrosion allowance at the early design stage.

Vortex-induced vibration characteristics of a low-mass-ratio flexible cylinder

        Lee Kee Quen,Aminudin Abu,Naomi Kato,Pauziah Muhamad,Kang Hooi Siang,Lim Meng Hee,Mohd Asamudin A Rahman 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.75 No.5

A laboratory experiment is conducted is to investigate the behaviour of a low-mass-ratio and high aspect ratio flexible cylinder under vortex-induced vibration (VIV). A flexible cylinder with aspect ratio of 100 and mass ratio of 1.17 is towed horizontally to generate uniform flow profile. The range of Reynolds number is from 1380 to 13800. Vibration amplitude, in-line and cross-flow frequency response, amplitude trajectory, mean tension variation and hydrodynamic force coefficients are analyzed based on the measurement from strain gauges, load cell and CCD camera. Experimental results indicate that broad-banded lock-in region is found for the cylinder with a small Strouhal number. The frequency switches in the present study indicates the change of the VIV phenomenon. The hydrodynamic force responses provide more understanding on the VIV of a low mass ratio cylinder.
