Development of Dental Gold Alloy with New Functions

Prosthetic appliances have to possess appropriate mechanical properties for their intended purpose. With regards to controlling the mechanical properties of dental alloys, age-hardenability is one of useful properties that can be utilized. Age-hardening heat treatment involves solution treatment for softening and ageing treatment for hardening of the alloy. Since these treatments for softening and ageing treatment for hardening of the alloy. Since these treatments are so technical and tedious, most dental alloys are placed in the oral cavity at the as-cast state. If a dental restorative alloy exhibits age-hardenability at intraoral temperature, it will be soft enough for occlusal correction and, with the passage of time, becomes hard enough to withstand the occlusion forces generated during mastication within the oral cavity. We were able to develop a dental gold alloy with age-hardenability at intraoral temperature. The hardness of the alloy was almost doubled in one day by aging at 37℃. We also found out that this alloy performs a function of shape memory effect.

The effect of palladium addition up to 6at% to an equiatomic AuCu alloy on the atomic ordering and age-hardening behavior was studied by means of electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction and hardness test. The following results were obtained. 1. All alloys in the AuCu-Pd pseudo-binary system examined in this study exhibited a single phase with AuCu Ⅰ type ordered structure by the aging at 300℃, and the axial ratio(c/a) became larger than that of stoichiometric AuCu Ⅰ ordered lattice. 2. The order-disorder transition temperature(Tc) rose with increasing the palladium concentration. 3. With increasing the palladium concentration, age-hardening rate in the early stage of aging became slower and the onset of overaging delayed. This was attributed to the fact that ordering rate decreased with increasing the palladium concentration.

등온자비 AuCu에 2.4, 4.3, 6.1at% Zn이 첨가된 합금의 시효경화거동과 상변태를 조사하였다. AuCu l형이 단독으로 존재하는 경우는 경도가 시효초기에 급격히 상승한 후 저하하였고, Zn 첨가량의 증가에 따라 규칙-불규칙 전이온도(Tc)가 약간 하강하였지만, AuCu l형+AuCu ll형의 공존영역의 온도는 훨씬 낮아졌다.
