Vertical Migration and Horizontal Distribution of Chaoborus Larvae in Lake Fukami- ike, Japan
Nagano, Mariko,Tanaka, Masaaki,Yagi, Akihiko The Korean Society of Limnology 2005 생태와 환경 Vol.38 No.S
Diel vertical migration (DVM) and horizontal distribution of Chaoborus flavicans larvae were studied in Lake Fukami-ike (maximum depth 7.75 m, Central Japan). The larvae showed a clear migration in the 4 ${\sim}$ 7 m layer during the day and throughout the water column at night. It should be noted that, while old instar distributed throughout the column during the night. Young instar was found only in the 1 ${\sim}$ 4 m layer. An examination of horizontal distribution revealed that larval stage was clearly related with the depth. It suggests that Chaoborus appear to exist in the deeper area during the larval stage.

Background: Very fine radiation-induced aerosol particles are produced in intense radiation fields, such as high-intensity accelerator rooms and containment vessels such as those in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP). Size measurement of the aerosol particles is very important for understanding the behavior of radioactive aerosols released in the FDNPP accident and radiation safety in high-energy accelerators. Materials and Methods: A combined technique using wire screens and imaging plates was developed for size measurement of fine radioactive aerosol particles smaller than 100 nm in diameter. This technique was applied to the radiation field of a proton accelerator room, in which radioactive atoms produced in air during machine operation are incorporated into radiation-induced aerosol particles. The size of $^{11}C$-bearing aerosol particles was analyzed using the wire screen technique in distinction from other positron emitters in combination with a radioactive decay analysis. Results and Discussion: The size distribution for $^{11}C$-bearing aerosol particles was found to be ca. $70{\mu}m$ in geometric mean diameter. The size was similar to that for $^7Be$-bearing particles obtained by a Ge detector measurement, and was slightly larger than the number-based size distribution measured with a scanning mobility particle sizer. Conclusion: The particle size measuring method using wire screens and imaging plates was successfully applied to the fine aerosol particles produced in an intense radiation field of a proton accelerator. This technique is applicable to size measurement of radioactive aerosol particles produced in the intense radiation fields of radiation facilities.

The vascular endothelial function is impaired in the very early stage of atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. The goal of this study was to identify the mechanism underlying the improvement in vascular endothelial function by sitagliptin in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. This study was an open-labeled prospective observational single arm trial. Forty patients were treated with 50 mg of sitagliptin once daily for 12-weeks. The flowmediated dilation (FMD) and plasma adiponectin were measured at baseline and 12 weeks after initiating treatment. The %FMD was significantly increased after treatment (4.13 ± 1.59 vs 5.12 ± 1.55, P < 0.001), whereas the nitroglycerin-mediated dilation (NMD) did not change. The plasma adiponectin levels significantly increased (13.0 ± 11.3vs 14.3 ± 12.8, P < 0.001). The changes in the FMD were significantly correlated with those of the plasma adiponectin (r = 0.322, P < 0.05). A multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that the improvement in the FMD is associated with the plasma adiponectin (P < 0.05). The treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with sitagliptin reverses vascular endothelial dysfunction, as evidenced by increase in the FMD, and improvement of the adiponectin levels (UMIN Clinical Trials Registry System as trial ID UMIN000004236).

Variations in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) concentrations in Holstein dairy cows milk, depending on feeding systems in different seasons was investigated. Milk samples were collected from Holstein dairy cows, which either grazed for whole days (WG), only daylight hours (TG), or were offered a total mixed ration (TMR) and experienced no grazing (NG), from April to December of 2005. In April, November and December, the cows in TG and WG treatments received grass silage and some concentrate, while from May to October, the cows grazed on temperate pasture. The cows in NG treatment received the TMR throughout the season. The major fatty acid obtained in the pastures was linolenic acid. There was no significant difference in the pasture's linolenic acid concentrations from May to September, but there was a significant decrease in October. However, the linolenic acid concentrations obtained in the pasture were always much higher than those obtained from the TMR. Linoleic acid was also the major fatty acid in the TMR, but these concentrations were higher in the TMR than in the pasture. There was no significant difference in milk cis9trans11CLA (c9t11CLA) concentrations between the three feeding systems while the cows were fed on conserved pasture in April, November and December. Although c9t11CLA concentrations were lower in the TMR, it was found that the cows which grazed in fresh pasture experienced significantly higher concentrations of c9t11CLA in their milk than those which received only TMR. It was also found that cows in the WG treatment experienced higher c9t11CLA concentrations than those in the TG treatment. In the WG and TG treatments, c9t11CLA concentrations were highest in June, after which, they gradually decreased (p<0.01) until October. For the NG treatment, there was no significant change in the concentrations of c9t11CLA (p>0.05) with season. Overall, trans11C18:1 and c9t11CLA were greatly influenced by season, with higher variation in the WG treatment than in the TG treatment and no variation in the NG treatment.
