      • E-learning motivation and educational portal acceptance in developing countries

Maldonado, Ursula Paola Torres,Khan, Gohar Feroz,Moon, Junghoon,Rho, Jae Jeung Emerald Group Publishing Limited 2011 ONLINE INFORMATION REVIEW Vol.35 No.1

<B>Purpose</B> - The purpose of this paper is to: empirically validate a modified unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model by adding an "e-learning motivation" construct in the South American context; try to determine the role of e-learning motivation in the use and adoption of e-learning systems and conversely the effect of technology on students' e-learning motivation; and to test region and gender as moderators in the model. <B>Design/methodology/approach</B> - A survey method was used to collect data from 47 schools located at different regions: the coast, Andes, and jungle of Peru. The partial least square technique was used for data analysis. <B>Findings</B> - It was found that "e-learning motivation" and "social influence" had a positive influence on behavioural intention, while "facilitating condition" had no effect on e-learning portal use. Furthermore, use behaviour had a positive influence on e-learning motivation. Also found was the moderating role of "region". <B>Research limitations/implications</B> - The analysis is carried out in a single country, thus, caution should be taken in generalisation of the results. <B>Practical implications</B> - The findings will help policy makers and practitioners in developing countries to better understand students' e-learning motivation. <B>Originality/value</B> - By adopting the UTAUT model, a new construct of "e-learning motivation" is added, and applied to the South American context.

      • Determination of Cyclability of Li/FeS2 Batteries Based on Measurement of Coulombic Efficiency

Maldonado Nogales, Paul,Song, Hee-Youb,Jeong, Soon-Ki Hindawi Limited 2018 Journal of nanomaterials Vol.2018 No.-

<P>The electrochemical performance of negative electrodes based on different FeS2 samples was investigated. The study demonstrated a correlation between the coulombic efficiency obtained over 60 cycles and the capacity loss rate evaluated over 15 cycles. The accuracy of the coulombic efficiency and capacity loss rate measurements was advantageous for predicting the aging behavior of half-cells over a short-term test. A suggested classification of the coulombic efficiency and verification via a numerical analysis were proposed to determine the fading rate of batteries during the galvanostatic test.</P>

Influence of temperature on kinetics and hydraulic retention time in discontinuous and continuous anaerobic systems

        Santiago Maldonado-Saeteros,Ricardo J. Baquerizo-Crespo,Yunet Gomez-Salcedo,Osney Perez-Ones,Ileana Pereda-Reyes 대한환경공학회 2023 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.28 No.2

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological treatment susceptible to temperature variations. The Arrhenius model and the Van´t Hoff-Arrhenius relationship analyze the temperature effect in AD first-order kinetic constant (k). Kinetic data is relevant for estimating the hydraulic retention time (HRT) in continuous reactors. This research aimed to evaluate the behavior of kinetic constants concerning temperature using the Arrhenius model and Van´t Hoff-Arrhenius relationship and analyze the influence of kinetic constants as estimators of the HRT. The evaluation of the temperature effect in AD analyzed k fit to the Arrhenius model and Van’t Hoff-Arrhenius relationship. The research used data of AD methane yield (B₀) kinetics from the literature, corresponding to macroalgae (MA) (25, 35, 45℃), swine manure (SM) (25, 30, 35℃), and co-digestion of chicken manure with sawdust and miscanthus (CM) (35, 40, 42℃). The Arrhenius model and Van´t Hoff-Arrhenius relationship fitted the data with reduced temperature intervals (ΔT = 5℃). The HRT analysis used a mass balance model considering 80% of the maximum B0 compared with the technical digestion time at 80 (T80) and 90% (T90) of the maximum B₀. The results indicate that the HRT calculation is sensitive for k below 0.13 d-1.

      • Effect of surface layers produced on lithium metal after heat treatment

( Paul Maldonado Nogales ),정순기 한국공업화학회 2020 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2020 No.-

Decades of research have been dedicated to the development and fundamental understanding of the forces that control the native film of Li metal. The representation and the origin of this film still needs more attention due to the lack of complementary information about natural - guided native film formation at high temperatures. In this study, we identify the nature of surface layers formation on lithium metal foil via the heat treatment process at low levels of moisture and oxygen. The heat treatment enables a guided formation of enriches lithium carbonate layer at native film responsible for the formation of stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in contact with electrolyte that simultaneously minimizes the decomposition, penetration of the electrolyte, and reaction with the bulk lithium metal under the surface. This natural formation of native film, and later SEI film, shows protection during the deposition-dissolution against short-circuiting, and stability of lithium metal.

Western Travelers in Colonial Korea: Foreign Perceptions on Legitimacy of the Japanese Rule and the Two Nations

Álvaro Trigo Maldonado 한국학중앙연구원 한국학중앙연구원 2020 THE REVIEW OF KOREAN STUDIES Vol.23 No.1

This paper analyzes the information contained in a variety of travelogues written prior to and after the Japanese annexation of Korea to provide a better understanding on how Westerners perceived the colonial rule. In order to do so quotes on specific topics such as the socio-political situation of Korea or the traveler’s perception on both Korean and Japanese people have been extracted and juxtaposed in an effort of identifying and defining predominant trends. These primary sources need to be approached taking in consideration the Zeitgeist during the period in the West. Their authors depart from a sociopolitical context during which Social Darwinism was in vogue. Besides that, while taking travelogues as a source of historical information has its limitations it also constitutes an excellent way to discuss to what extent the Japanese propaganda effort in the colony was efficient or not. It is also important to note that most of the travelers arrived into Korea via Japan, stayed at the Japanese-managed Chosun Hotel and they often had very limited interactions with Koreans. Thereby they were exposed to the Japanese discourse. This can be perceived in their comparisons between Korean and Japanese customs. However, I would like to argue how their perception on the latter was still influenced by the orientalist discourse as well.

        진드기의 수분조절 생리와 진드기 방제전략

        L. Paulina Maldonado-Ruiz,김동흔,박윤성 한국응용곤충학회 2022 한국응용곤충학회지 Vol.61 No.1

The gut bacteria symbionts from the monophagous insect Acrobasis nuxvorellaproduce tannase for the digestion of Carya illinoinensis tannins

        Consuelo G. Corrales-Maldonado,Vargas-Arispuro Irasema,Luis Martínez-Carrillo José,Pérez-Morales Rosalva,Ángel Martínez-Téllez Miguel,Aispuro-Hernández Emmanuel,Arellano-Gil Maritza,Castro-Espinoza Lu 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.4

Acrobasis nuxvorella Neuzing (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), or the Pecan Nut Casebearer (PNC), is a monophagous pecan nut [Carya illinoinensis (Wang) K. Koch] herbivore. This insect has caused major crop losses, despite pecan nut trees producing a high concentration of tannins, which are deterrent compounds for insects. The PNC consumes and processes tannin-rich tissues without any negative effects on its nutrition. Certain bacterial species of the herbivore gut microbiota have been proven to produce tannase, therefore, we hypothesize that the PNC has symbiotic bacteria that produce tannase for the digestion of tannin contained in their food. In this work, live PNC larvae were extracted from pecan nutlets. The larval guts were dissected and their contents were cultured to obtain the cultivable bacteria. A total of 224 bacterial isolates were recovered, 19 of which tested positive for tannase activity. Isolates LB66, LB24, TT29, and TP8 displayed comparable activity to the control strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Further enzyme semi-purification steps showed specific tannase ac tivity values in the range of 39.5–3.7 U/mg of protein. The isolates were identified as Bacillus pumilus strain TT29, Bacillus pumilus strain LB66, Bacillus pumilus strain LB24 and Sthaphylococcus warneri (TP8) by 16S ribo somal RNA gene sequencing. Our findings indicate that PNC larvae contain gut bacteria able to produce tannase that hydrolyze the galloyl ester bonds in tannins.
