        Relationship between Helicobacter pylori Virulence Genes and Clinical Outcomes in Saudi Patients

        Helicobacter pylori has been strongly associated with gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers,and it is a risk factor for gastric cancer. Two major virulence factors of H. pylori have been described: the cytotoxin-associated gene product (cagA) and the vacuolating toxin (vacA). Since considerable geographic diversity in the prevalence of H. pylori virulence factors has been reported, the aim of this work was to determine if there is a significant correlation between different H. pylori virulence genes (cagA and vacA) in 68 patients, from Saudi Arabia, and gastric clinical outcomes. H. pylor was recognized in cultures of gastric biopsies. vacA and cagA genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The cagA gene was obtained with 42 isolates (61.8%). The vacA s- and m- region genotypes were determined in all strains studied. Three genotypes were found: s1/m1 (28%), s1/m2(40%) and s2/m2 (26%). The s2/m1 genotype was not found in this study. The relation of the presence of cagA and the development of cases to gastritis and ulcer was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The study showed a significant correlation between the vacA s1/m2genotype and gastritis cases, and a significant correlation between vacA s1/m1 genotype and peptic ulcer cases. The results of this study might be used for the identification of high-risk patients who are infected by vacA s1/m1 genotype of H. pylori strains. In conclusion, H. pylori strains of vacA type s1 and the combination of s1/m1 were associated with peptic ulceration and the presence of cagA gene.

        Transient Multipath routing protocol for low power and lossy networks

        RPL routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks is an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) recommended IPv6 based protocol for routing over Low power Lossy Networks (LLNs). RPL is proposed for networks with characteristics like small packet size, low bandwidth, low data rate, lossy wireless links and low power. RPL is a proactive routing protocol that creates a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) of the network topology. RPL is increasingly used for Internet of Things (IoT) which comprises of heterogeneous networks and applications. RPL proposes a single path routing strategy. The forwarding technique of RPL does not support multiple paths between source and destination. Multipath routing is an important strategy used in both sensor and ad-hoc network for performance enhancement. Multipath routing is also used to achieve multi-fold objectives including higher reliability, increase in throughput, fault tolerance, congestion mitigation and hole avoidance. In this paper, M-RPL (Multi-path extension of RPL) is proposed, which aims to provide temporary multiple paths during congestion over a single routing path. Congestion is primarily detected using buffer size and packet delivery ratio at forwarding nodes. Congestion is mitigated by creating partially disjoint multiple paths and by avoiding forwarding of packets through the congested node. Detailed simulation analysis of M-RPL against RPL in both grid and random topologies shows that M-RPL successfully mitigates congestion and it enhances overall network throughput.

        Synthesis and In Vitro Evaluation of Some Novel Benzofuran Derivatives as Potential Anti-HIV-1, Anticancer, and Antimicrobial Agents

        A novel series of 1-(1-benzofuran-2-yl-ethylidene)-4-substituted thiosemicarbazides (2a-d) along with some derived ring systems: substituted-2,3-dihydro-thiazoles(3a-c, 4a-f) and thiazolidin-4-ones(5a-d and 6a-d), were synthesized. In addition, cyanoacetic acid-(1-benzofuran-2-yl-ethylidene) hydrazide(7) was used to prepare another new series of compounds consisting of substituted pyridin-2(1H)-ones(8a-c); 2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-thiazoles(9a-d) and 2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-6H-thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-7-ones (10a-c, 11a-c). The absolute configuration of compound 5c was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compounds prepared were evaluated for their in vitro anti-HIV, anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. Among the tested compounds, compounds 5c and 9a produced a significant reduction ㅐ ㄹ the viral cytopathic effect (93.19% and 59.55%) at concentrations $>2.0{\times}10^{-4}\;M\;and\;2.5{\times}10^{-5}\;M$respectively. Compound 9a was confirmed to have moderate anti-HIV activity. Compounds 2a, 2d, and 5c showed mild antifungal activity. However, none of the tested compounds showed any significant anticancer activity.

        Incidence and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in Saudi Arabia

        Mycoplasma pneumoniae is increasingly recognized as a common and an important pathogen in community-acquired respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and pneumonia, particularly in school-age children and young adults. To determine the incidence and antibiotic susceptibility of M. pneumoniae at the main hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, we studied 552 respiratory samples from patients diagnosed with different clinical diagnosis. The isolation, identification, enumeration and antibiotic resistance test for M. pneumoniae were performed using Pneumofast kit. There were 194 patients (35.1%) with current M. pneumoniae infection, mostly among younger age groups, with pneumonia the most common underlying clinical condition. All tested isolates were susceptible to four antibiotics included in the Pneumofast kit, doxycycline, minocycline, ciprofloxacine and erythromycin. The findings suggest that M. pneumonia infection in Saudi Arabia is more common among younger age groups, and pneumonia is the most common underlying clinical condition among patients with M. pneumoniae infection, that cannot be distinguished from other respiratory infections on the basis of clinical and radiographic diagnosis alone.

      • Clinical Impact of Overexpression of FOXP3 and WT1 on Disease Outcome in Egyptian Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients

        Background: In the last decade, it has become clear that change of gene expression may alter the hematopoietic cell quiescent state and consequently play a major role in leukemogenesis. WT1 is known to be a player in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and FOXP3 has a crucial role in regulating the immune response. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of overexpression of WT1and FOXP3 genes on clinical course in adult and pediatric AML patients in Egypt. Patients and methods: Bone marrow and peripheral blood samples were obtained from 97 de novo non M3 AML patients (63 adult and 34 pediatric). Real-time quantitative PCR was used to detect overexpression WT1 and FOXP3 genes. Patient follow up ranged from 0.2 to 39.0 months with a median of 5 months. Results: In the pediatric group; WT1 was significantly expressed with a high total leukocyte count median 50X109/L (p=0.018). In the adult group, WT1 had an adverse impact on complete remission induction, disease-free survival and overall survival (p=0.02, p=0.035, p=0.019 respectively). FOXP3 overexpression was associated with FAB subtypes AML M0 +M1 vs. M2, M4+M5 (p =0.039) and the presence of hepatomegaly (p=0.005). Conclusions: WT1 and FOXP3 overexpression has an adverse impact on clinical presentation, treatment response and survival of pediatric and adult Egyptian AML patients.

        Inorganic nanocrystal-carbon composite derived from cross-linked gallic acid derivative of polyphosphazenes for the efficient oxygen evolution reaction

        The development of heteroatoms doped inorganic nanocrystal-carbon composites (INCCs) has attained a great focus for energy applications (energy production and energy storage). A precise approach to fabricate the INCCs with homogenous distribution of the heteroatoms with an appropriate distribution of metal atoms remains a challenge for material scientists. Herein, we proposed a facile two-step route to synthesize INCC with doping of metal (α-Fe2O3) and non-metals (N, P, O) using hydrogel formed by treating hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 3, 4, 5-trihydroxy benzoic acid (Gallic acid). Metal oxide was doped using an extrinsic doping approach by varying its content and non-metallic doping by an intrinsic doping approach. We have fabricated four different samples (INCC-0.5%, INCC-1.0%, INCC-1.5%, and INCC-2.0%), which exhibit the uniform distribution of the N, P, O, and α-Fe2O3 in the carbon architecture. These composite materials were applied as anode material in water oxidation catalysis (WOC); INCC-1.5% electro-catalyst confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) with a noticeable catholic peak 0.85 V vs RHE and maximal current density 1.5 mA.cm−2. It also delivers better methanol tolerance and elongated stability than RuO2; this superior performance was attributed due to the homogenous distribution of the α-Fe2O3 causing in promotion of adsorption of O2 initially and a greater surface area of 1352.8 m2/g with hierarchical pore size distribution resulting higher rate of ion transportation and mass-flux.

        SFRP Synthesis of Acenaphthylene Oligomers and Block Copolymers. Potential Light Harvesting Structures

        Azo-acenaphthylene oligomers with repeating acenaphthylene units "n" up to 4, 5, 7, 17 and 19 have been prepared successfully using nitroxide mediated Stable Free Radical Polymerization (SFRP). Azo-acenaphthylene oligomers, reversibly end-capped by the stable nitroxide 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinoxyl (TEMPO), were further reacted via radical addition to 4-(naphthalenemethoxy)styrene monomer for diblock co-polymer formation. Characterization of the oligomers and diblock co-polymers was accomplished using MALDI-MS supported by GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography) and $^1H$ NMR spectrometry. MALDI-MS afforded definitive results by providing an inter-peak interval of 152 (m/z), corresponding to acenaphthylene monomer, and inter-peak interval of 260 (m/z) for the naphthalenemethoxystyrene monomer unit in block copolymers. Our study opens the way to control the number of repeat units in the oligomers. Further these oligomers can be tailored with various monomers for the formation of block copolymers.

        Annealed Polycarbazole/Tin Oxide/Graphene Oxide Ternary Nano Composite: A Highly Efficient Photocatalyst for the Photodegradation of Congo Red Dye under UV and Natural Daylight Irradiations

        PCz (polycarbazole)/SnO2/graphene oxide (GO) ternary nanocomposite, PTG, was successfully synthesized viafacile chemical route. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized in detail by using various advanced techniques. Theeffects of annealing on the micro structure, phase composition, and photocatalytic performance of PTG correlated withphotoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance (EIS) spectrum were investigated. The UV-DRS spectra disclosethat the absorption is red shifted owing to the effect of annealing and the band gap of annealed PTG were decreased from3.60 eV to 3.47 eV. The surface area of annealed PTG is 36.50 m2/g which is 3.9 times higher than the unannealed (9.30 m2/g). The annealed PTG shows flake like morphology accompanied by low degree of aggregation and demonstrated superiorphotodegradation efficiency against congo red (CR) dye under UV (95.9 %) and natural day light (98.4 %) irradiations. Thephotodegradation rate (k) of annealed PTG is 0.06584 which is two times larger than that of unannealed under the identicalconditions. The radical trapping experiment demonstrated that the holes (h+) and superoxide (*O2−) played a dominant role inthe photodegradation of CR dye. Furthermore, the possible mechanism is established by identifying the radicals involved inphotodegradation. In addition, the material demonstrated excellent stability after five consecutive cycles with only a 4-6 %loss in photo catalytic efficiency. Total organic carbon analysis shows the removal percentage of 64.6 % (UV) and 76.9 %(natural daylight) towards CR dye. The work presented here provides new platform which throw light into the practicalapplications of the ternary based nano composite in the field of photocatalysis.

      • Quantification of Residual Stresses in Laser Welded Cold Rolled Steel Sheets with Hole Drilling Method

        Residual stresses deteriorate strength of materials adversely affecting quality of industrial products. A removable or a reduction of the residual stresses is an essential procedure in successful product developments. Effective and convenient methods are necessary for detection and evaluation of the residual stresses. In this investigation Hole Drilling Method is chosen for identification and a quantitative determination of the residual stresses of specimen in two groups under different laser welding speed conditions, 4.1 m/min and 5.1 m/min. Laser lap welding of SPCC sheet joints was investigated along the welding line at two locations, at the welding middle and end locations in the heat affected zone (HAZ). Based on the experimental results and the analysis, higher welding speed condition is predicted to reduce the residual stresses.
