This study was conducted to select thin-shelled and high-yielding lines in job`s-tears. Two breeding lines of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 were selected from the local collections. These two lines were tested and investigated on their characteristics under the field condition. The heading date of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was later one or two days, but the maturity date was one or two days earlier than that of check variety Kim-jejong, respectively. The number of grains per hill of Suwon 3, Suwon 6 was 50%, 49% greater and the milling rate was 3.8%, 5.6% higher than that of check variety, respectively. Althought 1000 grain weight of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was 20g lighter and the rate of ripeness was 6%, 12% lower, the raw grain yield was 22%, 20% higher than that of check variety, respectively. The thickness of seed coat of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was thiner and the hardness of seed coat was lower than that of check variety, therefore the milling time was decreased 12%, 7% compare to check variety, respectively. The crude protein contents of Suwon 3 and Suwon 6 was slightly higher and the amino acid composition of Suwon 6 was similar to Kimjejong, but Suwon 3 was lower than that of check variety.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study examined the effect of Ca addition on the selective oxidation of the Al3Mg2 phase in an Al-5 mass%Mg alloy during oxidation at 400 °C and 500 °C for 72 h. Ca addition led to the formation of the Al4Ca and Laves_C36 phases besides the primary Al solid solution and Al3Mg2. After the oxidation test, there was no significant oxidation in both the Ca-free and Ca-added alloy samples and no visible change in the surfaces between them at 400 °C, which is lower than the melting temperature of Al3Mg2 (451 °C). At 500 °C, the surface of the Ca-free alloy showed the formation of oxide blisters, which was not observed in the Ca-added alloy. The presence of an Al4Ca phase at the grain boundaries led to the formation of multi-element oxides containing Al, Mg, and Ca, which can contribute to the formation of a compact oxide layer.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Ca addition in Al-Mg alloy forms two Ca based intermetallic compounds. </LI> <LI> Coexistence of Al4Ca and Al3Mg2 phases forms Ca-Mg-Al based oxides after oxidation. </LI> <LI> Ca-Mg-Al based oxides control oxide blister formation from Al3Mg2 during oxidation. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>Balsalazide is a colon-specific prodrug of 5-aminosalicylate that is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis. Parthenolide, a strong NF-kappa B inhibitor, has recently been demonstrated to be a promising therapeutic agent, promoting apoptosis of cancer cells. In the current study, the antitumor effect of balsalazide combined with parthenolide in human colorectal cancer cells and colitis-associated colon cancers (CAC) was investigated. The results demonstrate that the combination of balsalazide and parthenolide markedly suppress proliferation, nuclear translocation of NF-kappa B, I kappa B-alpha phosphorylation, NF-kappa B DNA binding, and expression of NF-kappa B targets. Apoptosis via NF-kappa B signaling was confirmed by detecting expression of caspases, p53 and PARP. Moreover, treatment of a CAC murine model with parthenolide and balsalazide together resulted in significant recovery of body weight and improvement in histologic severity. Administration of parthenolide and balsalazide to CAC mice also suppressed carcinogenesis as demonstrated by uptake of 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy- D-glucose (FDG) using micro-PET/CT scans. These results demonstrate that parthenolide potentiates the efficacy of balsalazide through synergistic inhibition of NF-kappa B activation and the combination of dual agents prevents colon carcinogenesis from chronic inflammation. A three-month-old, intact male Maltese dog was presented to the hospital with lethargy after taking a human medication, Motilitone. Physical examination, including a neurological examination, revealed no remarkable findings, but cholinergic crisis symptoms appeared gradually. Blood and radiological examinations showed no remarkable findings. The dog was tentatively diagnosed with a cholinergic crisis associated with Motilitone intake. Treatment included intravenous administration of atropine (0.02 mg/kg) every 30 minutes and supportive fluid therapy. After 12 hours of treatment, the patient's clinical signs were resolved. This is the first case report describing Motilitone toxicity in a dog.
Controllable Pretilt Angles for Liquid Crystal Molecules using a Rubbing Treated Mixture Layer
Kim, Dae-Hyun,Park, Hong-Gyu,Kim, Young-Hwan,Kim, Byoung-Yong,Ok, Chul-Ho,Seo, Dae-Shik The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2009 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.10 No.4
We have investigated the continuous pretilt angle generation for liquid crystals using a rubbing treated mixture layer consisting of homogeneous and homeotropic polyimides. Various pretilt angles in the range from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ were achieved as a function of the concentration of homeotropic PI. The transmittance characteristics used to measure the pretilt angle showed that the pretilt angles were measured with a high reliability. We observed uniform liquid crystal alignment on the rubbing treated mixture layer.

<P>Aromatase encoding by the CYP19 gene catalyzes the conversion of androgens to estrogens. In order to determine if polymorphisms of the CYP19 gene are associated with breast cancer risk, we analyzed the frequency of tetranucleotide (TTTA) tandem repeats and a 3-bp insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism in intron 4 of the CYP19 gene in genomic DNA from 70 Korean breast cancer patients and 102 age-matched, healthy women. The 3-bp deletion allele was found more frequently in the breast cancer group than in the control group (p=0.001). Logistic regression analysis of the CYP 19 insertion/deletion (I/D) genotype showed a strong association between ID polymorphisms and breast cancer. The frequency of DD and ID alleles was significantly increased in the breast cancer group (DD genotype p=0.004, OR=12.81; and ID genotype p=0.005, OR=2.62). However, there were no differences in the genotype distributions of the (TTTA)n polymorphism of CYP19 between breast cancer patients and healthy controls. A positive association was noted between TTTA polymorphisms with 10 or more repeats and ER-negative tumors, as well as between lower repeat polymorphisms and ER-positive tumors (p=0.019). With respect to TTTA polymorphisms, we confirmed that the expression of aromatase in ER-positive MCF7 cells with 7-3 and 11 allele heterozygosity was significantly higher than in ER-negative MDA-MB231 cells with 11 allele homozygosity. These results suggest that 3-bp I/D polymorphisms of the CYP19 gene may be associated with breast cancer and that the (TTTA)n repeat genotype would be useful in selecting candidates for tamoxifen therapy, as well as predicting breast cancer risk in Korean women.</P>
